Tees Valley Youth Choir

Tees Valley Youth Choir, or commonly abbreviated and referred to as TVYC, is the flagship choir of Tees Valley Music Service. Its members are made up of 13- to 19-year-olds and recruits from the boroughs of Stockton-on-Tees, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Darlington, and Redcar & Cleveland. It also draws members from further afield, particularly North Yorkshire, County Durham and surrounding areas.

The choir was established in 1993 by John Forsyth MBE (County Music Adviser for Cleveland at the time). Since then, invitations to perform at National and International events have been a regular feature. John Forsyth MBE conducted the choir, which has produced many professional and semi-professional singers over the years, until summer 2010. He handed the baton to Andy King at his retirement concert at The Sage Gateshead in September 2010. Successful yearly European concert tours have taken the choir to Spain, Italy, Hungary, Slovakia, Belgium, France, Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany, usually alongside the Tees Valley Youth Orchestra.

Concerts and Performances

Tees Valley Youth Choir perform many concerts as part of their annual programme of events. As well as performing in the Tees Valley and North Yorkshire, the choir takes part in concerts throughout the United Kingdom and Europe. In its busy schedule, the choir performed at The Sage Gateshead in August 2006, as part of a grand choral concert for the Association of British Choral Directors (ABCD). In the summer of 2008 Howard Goodall CBE, the well-known British composer and presenter, asked the choir to perform his requiem "Eternal Light" at the Newcastle Theatre Royal in March 2009.

Choir members appeared with a number of major artists in the recording and music video of a cover version of God Only Knows simulcast on BBC television and radio channels on 7 October 2014 to launch BBC Music, which was subsequently released as a charity single for Children in Need 2014. [1] [2] More recently, TVYC have performed on the Videopolis Stage in Disneyland Paris as part of their 2018 tour to France.

Competitions

In 2006, TVYC was successful in reaching the finals in the Youth category of the BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year competition and also won a "wildcard" judges' decision place through to the Grand Final (all categories). Both finals were held at the Cardiff Millennium Centre. The choir sang first in the Grand Final on 10 December, singing "Sing Joyfully" (William Byrd), "Lully Lulla" (Kenneth Leighton) and "Yver" (Debussy). TVYC came 2nd to Chantage, separated only by 4 and a half marks. 400 choirs entered the competition from the start almost a year beforehand.

The choir has been successfully auditioned for the finals of the National Festival of Music for Youth multiple times. In 2011, The choir performed at Adrian Boult Hall in Birmingham and achieved the highest award for their renditions of "Bogorodise Devo" (Sergei Rachmaninoff), "Armottoman Osa" (Mia Makaroff), "Contre Qui, Rose" (Morten Lauridsen) and "The Battle of Jericho" (Moses Hogan). This resulted in an invitation to perform at the pieces at the Schools Prom in November 2011 at the Royal Albert Hall. [3]

In 2012, the choir returned to Birmingham to perform "Salve Regina" (Lars Jansson, Gunnar Eriksson), "Sleep" (Eric Whitacre) and "Kalinda" (Sydney Guillaume) at Birmingham Town Hall. [4] The choir once again received the highest commendation.

Members

Every year the choir loses several members as they leave the area to continue their studies at various universities. Many TVYC members are also members of the award-winning Tees Valley Youth Orchestra and the Tees Valley Youth Brass Band.

Folkestra, formerly known as FolkESTRA North is The Sage Gateshead’s youth folk ensemble, formed in 2001. It is led by their Musical Director Ian Stevenson, a multi-instrumentalist playing folk and traditional music from Northumbria and Scandinavia. The former Musical Director was Kathryn Tickell, one of England's premiere folk musicians.

Tees Valley Youth Orchestra

The Tees Valley Youth Orchestra is the flagship youth orchestra of Tees Valley Music Service and one of the largest youth orchestras in the UK, which welcomes the best music students across the four boroughs of the Tees Valley and indeed from all over the North East of England. The orchestra also draws some members from further afield, such as North Yorkshire, making it the only full sized youth orchestra that meets regularly in the North East of England. Rehearsals take place every Friday night during term time from 6:30 to 9:15 at Teesside High School. The orchestra was originally conducted by David Kendall in the 1980s. David Kendal conducted the orchestra as well as being head of the music service and handed the baton to Christopher Johns on retirement in 2006. From 2006 to 2010, the orchestra was conducted by Chris Johns, who retired in December 2010 after being appointed as Director of Music at Leicester Cathedral. Nicholas Nowicki has conducted the orchestra since January 2011, assisted by tutors who work with the different sections of the orchestra for the first half of four rehearsals per term.

Sydney Philharmonia Choirs is Australia’s largest choral organisation. It presents its own annual concert series in the Sydney Opera House the City Recital Hall, and other venues in New South Wales, as well as serving as chorus for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

Royal Northern Sinfonia

Royal Northern Sinfonia is a British chamber orchestra, founded in Newcastle upon Tyne and currently based in Gateshead. For the first 46 years of its history, the orchestra gave most of its concerts at the Newcastle City Hall. Since 2004, the orchestra has been resident at Sage Gateshead. In June 2013 Queen Elizabeth II bestowed the title 'Royal' on the orchestra, formally naming it the Royal Northern Sinfonia.

The National Youth Choirs of Great Britain (NYCGB) is the family of choirs for outstanding young singers, and those with outstanding potential, in the United Kingdom. It comprises a total of five choirs for around 750 young people between the ages of 9 and 25:

The Wessex Youth Orchestra (WYO) is a youth orchestra based in the Bournemouth and Poole areas of Dorset, England. Founded in 1971, the WYO is composed of approximately 100 student musicians from grades 6 to 8+. Three annual concerts are performed, mostly in the Wessex Hall at Poole's centre for the arts, Lighthouse (Poole). The orchestra has also performed nationally and internationally in festivals, tours and exchanges, and has been broadcast by the BBC.

The Leeds Festival Chorus is based in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It has 160 singing members in soprano, alto, tenor and bass sections. Presenting classical choral music of a professional standard in Yorkshire and elsewhere, including at the BBC Proms and abroad - for example in Venice. The Chorus is broadcast regularly on BBC Radio 3.

Simon Halsey English choral conductor

Simon Halsey, CBE is an English choral conductor. He is the Chorus Director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus, a position he has held since 1983, and has been Chorus Director of the London Symphony Chorus since 2012. He is also artistic director of the Berlin Philharmonic Youth Choral Programme and the director of the BBC Proms Youth Choir, and Conductor Laureate of the Berlin Radio Choir. He is Professor and Director of Choral Activities at the University of Birmingham.

Crouch End Festival Chorus Musical artist

Crouch End Festival Chorus (CEFC) is a symphonic choir based in north London which performs in a range of musical styles, including traditional choral repertoire, contemporary classical, rock, pop and film music.

The National Youth Orchestra of Wales is the national youth orchestra of Wales, based in Cardiff. Founded in 1945, it is the longest-standing national youth orchestra in the world.

David Temple British conductor and musical director

David Anthony Temple is a British conductor and musical director of Crouch End Festival Chorus and Hertfordshire Chorus. He has conducted at the Barbican Centre, Royal Festival Hall and Symphony Hall, Birmingham, Royal Albert Hall, Sage Gateshead, The Roundhouse, Snape Maltings and St Albans Cathedral.

Taplow Choirs is a group of four professional youth choirs for young people which rehearse in the village of Taplow, UK near Slough. It was founded in September 2004 by Philip Viveash and Gillian Dibden MBE after both conductors split from Berkshire Maestros. They held their first concert in the Christmas of 2004. They frequently perform in venues such as Windsor Castle and other professional events around London, have been on international tours and won the BBC's choir of the year award.

Les Sirènes is a Glasgow-based women's chamber choir consisting of 26 vocalists, all students and graduates of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. In October 2012, the choir was awarded the prestigious title of Choir of the Year 2012, after an extensive UK-wide search and a competitive Grand Final held at London's Royal Festival Hall.

Egglescliffe School & Sixth Form College is a large Coeducational secondary school and sixth form located in Eaglescliffe in County Durham, England.

Brighton Festival Chorus Musical artist

Brighton Festival Chorus is a large choir of over 150 amateur singers based in Brighton, UK. One of the country's leading symphony choruses.., and considered "one of the jewels in the city's musical crown", BFC performs in major concert halls throughout Britain and Europe, particularly in Brighton and London.
