Telia Urey is a Liberian businesswoman, philanthropist, and politician. [1] Urey is the daughter of the Liberian businessman and politician Benoni Urey. In 2019, she contested in a representative election in Liberia, where she ran on a ticket of coalition of four political parties: All Liberian Party, Liberty Party, Alternative National Congress, and former ruling Unity Party- the party of former president Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. Early life and education

Urey completed most of her primary and secondary education in Liberia and Ghana, before leaving for Canada to attend Columbia International College and McGill University in Hamilton, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec, respectively. She studied political science and sociology. [3]

Career

Urey opened Melyke Hair in Canada in 2009, wholesaling and retailing hair and hair products to companies and women in Canada, Liberia, Cameroon, and Ghana. In 2010, Urey went on to open The Pet Store - the first post-war veterinary clinic in Liberia, located on 4th Street in Sinkor. The Pet Store brought relief to many livestock farmers who reportedly were losing their animals due to the lack of veterinary services in the country.

In 2011, Urey formed Core Investment Group, a real estate development company with residential and commercial developments across Liberia. [4]

Urey is also the owner of the Liberian restaurant Fuzion d’Afrique, established in 2015 and located in Monrovia, Liberia. [5] [ failed verification ] The restaurant hosts charitable events including the monthly “Made in Liberia Fair”, organized in collaboration with the Liberia Business Association and the Liberia Chamber of Commerce, which is a forum where goods and services produced and offered in Liberia are displayed and sold. In 2019, she was nominated for “Female Entrepreneur of The Year” Award by Liberian Youth Awards. [7]

Politics

Urey has been in political advocacy for over 9 years, been a part of protests for social justice and economic change, supported civil society movements, engaged the media, supported candidates and political campaigns in her fight for change. [3]

In 2019, Urey contested a representative by-election in District 15 in Montserrado County. She contested on the ticket of the Collaborating Political Parties. She came second in the election and was publicly praised for effective competition by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who supported her candidacy. [8]

She is the daughter of Liberian businessman and politician Benoni Urey and businesswoman and philanthropist, Mai B. Urey. She has three siblings.

General elections were held in Liberia on 10 October 2017 to elect the President and House of Representatives. No candidate won a majority in the first round of the presidential vote, so the top two finishers – CDC standard-bearer Amb. George Weah and UP standard-bearer Vice President Joseph Boakai – competed in a run-off on 26 December. The second round was originally scheduled for 7 November, but was postponed after LP standard-bearer Cllr. Charles Brumskine, in third place, challenged the result in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court dismissed the challenge, which would have forced a re-run of the first round had it been successful, and the second round was held on 26 December. Weah emerged victorious with 60% of the vote.

The Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) was a political alliance in Liberia. The alliance was originally formed in 2018 by four opposition political parties: the All Liberian Party (ALP), the Unity Party (UP), the Alternative National Congress (ANC), and the Liberty Party (LP). It was certified by the National Elections Commission (NEC) in 2020. By February 2022, the ALP and UP had withdrawn the alliance. By March 2022, a large faction of the LP had left as well. In April 2024, the CPP had officially dissolved.

The 2019 Liberian by-elections were held on July 29 and October 5 in Montserrado County and Grand Cape Mount County respectively. The by-elections in Montserrado were to fill two vacancies, one in the House of Representatives and one in the Senate. The Grand Cape Mount by-election filled one vacancy in the Senate. The Montserrado House by-election in the county's fifteenth district held a partial rerun of the election on August 28. In the end, opposition candidate Abraham Darius Dillon was elected to the Senate in Montserrado County, and ruling party candidate Abu Kamara was elected in the House. Victor Varney Watson was elected to the Senate in Grand Cape Mount County.

The 2009 Liberian by-elections were held by mid February and on November 10 in River Gee County and Montserrado County respectively. Both elections were caused by deaths in the Senate and both resulted in run-off elections. The Montserrado County run-off election was held on November 24. The winners of the elections were Nathaniel J. Williams in River Gee and Geraldine Doe-Sheriff in Montserrado.
