The Tendra Spit or Island ofTendra is a sandbar in the Black Sea and part of Kherson Oblast in Ukraine.

Contents

The island separates the Gulf of Tendra from the Black Sea and is located at the southern and western part of the bay. In the west the island has a spit called Bili Kuchuhury which, stretching east through the Gulf of Tendra as a shoal, reaches the Yahorlyk Kut peninsula. Bili Kuchuhury contains the Bili Kuchuhury Lighthouse.

The Tendra Lighthouse is also on the island.

History

The Battle of Tendra took place on 8 and 9 September 1790.

The mutiny of men on board the Russian battleship Potemkin took place off Tendra Spit in June 1905.

During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, on the night of 28 February 2024, Ukrainian Special Operations Forces troops from 73rd Maritime Special Operations Center attempted to make a landing on the sandbar. They were ambushed by the Russian troops and sustained heavy casualties. According to the Russian MOD, 4 boats out of 5 were destroyed or sunk and up to 25 Ukrainian soldiers were killed. One Ukrainian soldier was captured. [1] [2] [3] [4]

On 7 August 2024, Ukraine announced that it had conducted another raid on the Tendra Spit. [5]

On 2 March 2023, the Russian authorities said that an armed Ukrainian group crossed the border and attacked the villages of Lyubechane and Sushany in Bryansk Oblast. Russia said the attackers fired on a car, killing two civilians, before the Federal Security Service forced them back into Ukraine. The raid was claimed by the Russian Volunteer Corps; a paramilitary group of Russian citizens, based in Ukraine, which opposes the Russian regime of Vladimir Putin. Russia called the incident a terrorist attack, and said its 9 March missile strikes on Ukraine were retaliation. Ukraine's government denied involvement; it said the incident could have been a false-flag attack by Russia to justify its ongoing war against Ukraine, or else an attack by anti-government partisans from within Russia.

On 29 October 2022, there was a large-scale attack by aerial drones and drone boats on the Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

On the morning of 13 May 2023, an air group of four aircraft of the Russian Air Force crashed almost simultaneously in the Bryansk Oblast of Russia: two Mi-8 helicopters, a Su-34 fighter-bomber and a Su-35 fighter. According to Baza, nine people were killed: three crew members each in two Mi-8s, two Su-34 pilots and a Su-35 pilot.

During the Russo-Ukrainian War, Ukraine has conducted raids on the Tendra Spit, which is occupied by Russia. The spit is a narrow island off the coast of Kherson Oblast, on the Black Sea. It is northwest of the Crimean Peninsula.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">73rd Naval Special Operations Center (Ukraine)</span> Military unit

73rd Naval Special Operations Center "Chieftain Antin Holovaty" or the Special Operations Center South is the naval component of the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces. It joined the Ukrainian Navy on 1992 and became a part of Special Operations Forces in 2016, becoming the sole naval component of SOF. It is headquartered at Ochakiv.
