The United States' Lindsay Davenport defeated Spain's Arantxa Sánchez Vicario in the final, 7–6(10–8), 6–2 to win the gold medal in Women's Singles tennis at the 1996 Summer Olympics. In the bronze-medal match, the Czech Republic's Jana Novotná defeated the United States' Mary Joe Fernández, 7–6(10–8), 6–4. Sánchez Vicario became the second woman to win multiple Olympic tennis medals in singles ; Fernández would have done so as well, but the rules had been changed since the last Games to add a bronze medal playoff match.

Czechoslovakia's Miloslav Mečíř defeated the United States' Tim Mayotte in the final, 3–6, 6–2, 6–4, 6–2, to win the gold medal in Men's Singles tennis at the 1988 Summer Olympics. It was Czechoslovakia's first medal at the event. The United States' Brad Gilbert and Sweden's Stefan Edberg won the bronze medals. It was Sweden's first men's singles Olympic medal.

The United States' Gigi Fernández and Mary Joe Fernández defeated Spain's Conchita Martínez and Arantxa Sánchez Vicario in the final, 7–5, 2–6, 6–2 to win the gold medal in Women's Doubles tennis at the 1992 Summer Olympics. The Unified Team's Leila Meskhi and Natasha Zvereva and Australia's Rachel McQuillan and Nicole Provis won the bronze medals.

The men's singles tennis event of the 2011 Pan American Games was held from October 17–22 at the Telcel Tennis Complex in Guadalajara. The defending Pan American Games champion was Flávio Saretta of Brazil.

Lori McNeil and Stephanie Rehe were the defending champions, but Rehe did not compete this year.

Magnus Norman was the defending champion, but chose to compete at Stuttgart in the same week.

Chris Haggard and Peter Nyborg were the defending champions, but competed this year with different partners. Haggard teamed up with Tom Vanhoudt and lost in the semifinals to Pablo Albano and Cyril Suk, while Nyborg teamed up with Aleksandar Kitinov and also lost in the semifinals to Joshua Eagle and Andrew Florent.

Dimitri Poliakov was the defending champion, but did not compete this year.
