Tentacular is a virtual reality game developed by Firepunchd Games and published by Devolver Digital. The game was released for Microsoft Windows via Meta Quest 2 and SteamVR on March 24, 2022, and released as a launch title for PlayStation VR2 on February 22, 2023. [2] [3]

Gameplay

Tentacular is a physics-based adventure game where the player takes on the role of a gigantic but good-hearted tentacled beast in the waters of La Kalma, [4] tasked with helping the islands citizens research a strange and powerful energy source. [5]

There are 50 puzzle and action levels in which the player will need to use their tentacles to build large contraptions, structures, and taxi the citizens around La Kalma. [6] The game also features a creative sandbox mode where the player has the freedom to explore and interact with the island. [4]

Development

Tentacular was officially announced via Twitter by Devolver Digital on February 11, 2022, with a release date of Q2 2022, with Firepunchd initially teasing the game in 2020. [7]

Firepunchd, also known as Simon Cubasch is a game developer based in Berlin, Germany. He founded the digital agency "GoSub Communications" in 1998 which was acquired by Edelman in 2011. In his time with GoSub, Cubasch created over 20 games varying from 3D TV games, augmented reality applications, and mobile games. [8]

Reception

During the 26th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards, the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences nominated Tentacular for Immersive Reality Game of the Year. [9]

nDreams, Ltd. is a company that develops and publishes video games. It is located in Farnborough, Hampshire in the United Kingdom. The company was formed in August 2006 by former SCi and Eidos creative director, Patrick O'Luanaigh. Since formation, the developer has worked on numerous projects for different video game platforms, initially PlayStation Home, the virtual world on Sony's PlayStation 3 console, where they grew to become one of the leading publishers. From late 2013 nDreams began working on content for virtual reality (VR) headsets, such as Sony's PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR. nDreams has stated that they are now entirely focused on developing content for virtual reality.

Owlchemy Labs is a video game developer based in Austin, Texas. The company was founded in 2010 by Worcester Polytechnic Institute graduate Alex Schwartz. Owlchemy is best known for its virtual reality video games Job Simulator and Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality. In May 2017, the studio was acquired by Google.

Oculus Rift is a discontinued line of virtual reality headsets developed and manufactured by Oculus VR, a virtual reality company founded by Palmer Luckey that is widely credited with reviving the virtual reality industry. It was published by Innersloth in November 2022 for Quest 2 and Windows via several SteamVR-supported headsets. A PlayStation 5 version via the PlayStation VR2 was planned for February 2023, but did not release in that timeframe.

<i>Cosmonious High</i> 2022 video game

Cosmonious High is a virtual reality adventure game developed and published in 2022 by Owlchemy Labs for SteamVR, HTC Vive, and Oculus Quest 2 through Windows in which students attend a colorful and chaotic high school in space with a cast of quirky alien classmates. A port for PlayStation VR2 was released alongside the system's launch on February 22, 2023.
