The George Ward Technology College was a medium-sized comprehensive school in Melksham, Wiltshire, England between 1953 and 2010. A maintained co-educational secondary school, it catered for pupils aged 11 to 18. Wiltshire County Council was the Local Authority for the school. [1]
The school's last Ofsted report, published in February 2010, assessed the school as "inadequate", "performing significantly less well than in all the circumstances it could reasonably be expected to perform." The school was subsequently given a notice to improve. [2]
The school opened in September 1953 as Shurnhold School with accommodation for 800 pupils, on the north-west outskirts of Melksham, on the road to Shaw. It was the first post-war secondary school in Wiltshire. [1]
Shurnhold was a secondary modern school. Its name changed to George Ward School on its transition to a comprehensive school. [3] The school was named after Alderman George Ward who served as the first Chairman of Governors from the opening of the school until he died in February 1969. [1] By 2006, the school had over 1400 pupils. [1]
In 2006, the George Ward School was selected for replacement by a new school under the Building Schools for the Future programme. It was replaced by Melksham Oak School which opened on a new site, south-east of the town, in June 2010. [4] The George Ward site was sold for a housing development named George Ward Gardens. [5]
Chippenham is a market town in northwest Wiltshire, England. It lies 13 miles (21 km) northeast of Bath, 86 miles (138 km) west of London, and is near the Cotswolds Area of Natural Beauty. The town was established on a crossing of the River Avon and some form of settlement is believed to have existed there since before Roman times. It was a royal vill, and probably a royal hunting lodge, under Alfred the Great. The town continued to grow when the Great Western Railway arrived in 1841. The town had a population of 36,548 in 2021.
Melksham is a town and civil parish on the River Avon in Wiltshire, England, about 4.5 miles (7 km) northeast of Trowbridge and 6 miles (10 km) south of Chippenham. At the 2011 census, the Melksham built-up area had a population of 19,357, making it Wiltshire's fifth-largest settlement after Swindon, Salisbury, Chippenham and Trowbridge.
Sheldon School is a large mixed secondary school and sixth form in Chippenham, Wiltshire for students aged 11 to 18 and is the largest school in Wiltshire. Since April 2011, it has been an Academy. It is one of three in Chippenham, the others being Abbeyfield and Hardenhuish. Since 1 September 2012, the school has been headed by Neil Spurdell who had previously been headteacher at John O'Gaunt School in Hungerford, West Berkshire. The school is off the Hardenhuish Lane in the southern region of Hardenhuish Park, which is all that separates it from Hardenhuish School to the north.

The school is near the centre of the town, next to the Leisure Centre, between the A342 and A360. In September 2012, the school became an academy, and it joined The White Horse Federation Multi-academy Trust in 2017. The school is the only secondary school in the town of Devizes and also serves many surrounding villages. Built around the Georgian Southbroom House, the school now comprises additional teaching blocks of a more modern style, set within its own sports fields. Ofsted has graded the school Good in each of the past five visits, the latest in March 2019.

The school's present site to the south of the town was the last home of the former Bentley Grammar School, from 1957 to 1974, and the present school was called The John Bentley School when it was created as a new comprehensive in 1974. The school's name was changed to Kingsbury Green Academy in 2019, after it joined the Royal Wootton Bassett Academy Trust.

Coteland's School Ruskington was a secondary-level community school in the village of Ruskington, Lincolnshire, accommodating pupils aged 11–16 through years 7 to 11. It formally opened as Ruskington Secondary Modern School in 1957, although teaching had begun the previous year. It federated with St George's College of Technology in nearby Sleaford in 2007, and then closed at the end of 2009 to allow the schools to merge into St George's Academy. The buildings and grounds were significantly redeveloped in 2012–15 to serve as a satellite school for the academy.
