The Heatwave is a dancehall sound system and production crew from London. [1] [2] They have performed at clubs and festivals worldwide since 2003, and produced and released music since 2004. [3] [4]

Biography

The Heatwave, a collective founded by Gabriel Myddelton, comprises DJs, MCs and dancers and are known for their wild parties and informative radio shows. [5] [6] They draw together music from Jamaica and England [7] and work to highlight the importance of dancehall in the UK. [5] [4] The Heatwave's compilations and mixes have shown how dancehall is at the root of British club music genres like jungle, garage, grime, dubstep and funky house. [8] [9]

The Heatwave started out as dancehall promoters, advertising their east London parties with fly posters and selling 7" vinyl records out the boot of Gabriel's car. [10] They presented Rinse FM’s only dancehall show when the station was still a pirate, and their Hot Wuk nights take place across the UK. [10]

Production

The Heatwave's 2017 single 'Walk Out Gyal' featuring Mr Lexx & Keida was nominated for Track of the Year at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards. [11] Their 2018 release 'Closer To Me' featuring Stylo G was chosen by Toddla T as his Coldest Record on BBC Radio 1Xtra. [12]

The Heatwave have been known for remixing hit songs in a dancehall style ever since the 2004 release of Trick Me Twice, which blended Trick Me by Kelis with dancehall vocalists Beenie Man and T.O.K. [13] In 2011, they remixed Jamie xx's remix of Adele's hit 'Rolling In The Deep', adding vocals by Cecile, Mr Lexx and Timberlee. [14] [15] The Heatwave have also remixed tracks by artists such as TNGHT, [16] Mosca, [17] Popcaan [18] Stylo G. [19]

Live Shows

The Heatwave appear regularly at Notting Hill Carnival [20] and in August 2016 they hosted a carnival sound system alongside Different Strokes and Island Records. [21] They have performed at festivals such as Glastonbury, SXSW, Boomtown, Outlook, Bestival and Lovebox [1] [22] [23] and have supported Sean Paul at concerts in London and Bristol. [24] [25]

Hot Wuk

The Heatwave launched their Hot Wuk party in 2009 and were joined soon after by resident DJ and UK garage producer Sticky. [2] [26] From 2012, the Hot Wuk parties began to tour multiple cities around the UK, including Bristol, Leeds, Nottingham, Manchester, Birmingham, Brighton, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Southampton, and Bournemouth. [8] [27] [28]

Hot Wuk parties are known for high energy live performances, dance crews, whistles and horns, warm and cheerful crowds, carnival trucks, MCs and DJs, and raucous behaviour. [8] [29] [30] [7] The London parties have been held in venues such as KOKO, [31] Kentish Town Forum, [32] Electric Brixton, [8] Oval Space, [33] East Village, [30] The Social, [7] and Electric Ballroom.

Showtime

In June 2011, The Heatwave organised and promoted an event called Showtime. The show featured MCs such as General Levy, Wiley, Skibadee, Glamma Kid, Stylo G, Lady Leshurr, Stush, YT, Mr Williamz, Lady Chann, Asher Senator, Riko Dan, Flowdan, Serocee, and Rubi Dan sharing the microphone in sound system style. [34] It was recorded and made into a DVD by Rollo Jackson featuring live performances and in-depth interviews that chart an oral history of UK dancehall. [35] [36]

The crew took the Showtime concept to Birmingham in June 2012 with a line-up that included Gappy Ranks, Rodney P, Top Cat, Durrty Goodz, Serocee, Lady Leshurr, RoxXxan, Juki Ranx, RTKAL, Vital, and Rubi Dan. [37] [38]

In June 2019, Showtime returned for a month-long residency at The Jazz Café in London. [39] The events told the story of dancehall in the UK across four decades, featuring MCs and DJs such as Tippa Irie, Ragga Twins, Horseman, Trevor Sax, Top Cat, Sweetie Irie, Glamma Kid, Victor V, Stush, Maxwell D, Bushkin, Sticky, Lisa Mercedez, Mr Williamz, J Kaz, and Sir DJ Corey. Radio & Compilations

The Heatwave have been resident on Rinse FM since 2009 [28] [17] and host a quarterly show on NTS Radio. [41] They appear regularly as guests on BBC 1Xtra shows [42] [43] [44] and have also held two residencies on the station's Xtra Talent series. [45] [46]

In 2008, The Heatwave compiled 'An England Story' for Soul Jazz Records. [17] Their 2013 compilation 'Gyal Power', focusing on female dancehall MCs, was favourably reviewed by The Guardian, NME and Independent. [3] [47] [48]

Paul Scott Levy, also known as General Levy, is an English ragga deejay, regularly employed on studio tracks by drum and bass DJs. He is best known for the track "Incredible" which he recorded with M-Beat. A remixed version of this reached number 8 on the UK Singles Chart in 1994.

Roger Robinson, better known as Robbo Ranx, is a UK dancehall and reggae DJ. He presented shows on BBC Radio 1Xtra for twelve years.

David Michael "Ram Jam" Rodigan MBE OD is a British radio DJ who also performs as a disc jockey. Known for his selections of reggae and dancehall music, he has played on stations including Radio London, Capital 95.8, Kiss 100, BBC Radio 1Xtra, BBC Radio 2 and BFBS Radio.

Samuel Justin Jude Clarke, better known by his stage name Ghetts, is a British grime MC, rapper and songwriter. His music has been played on national radio stations such as BBC Radio 1, Kiss 100, BBC Asian Network, and BBC Radio 1Xtra. Currently, Ghetts is signed to independent record label Disrupt, and released his debut studio album, Rebel with a Cause, on 9 March 2014. Known for his hard hitting lyrics and intricate rhyme schemes, he is associated and has toured internationally with such acts as Kano and was a member of NASTY Crew.

The Heartless Crew are a UK garage crew from North London. The group has been credited for paving the way for grime music, alongside So Solid Crew and Pay As U Go.

BBC Radio 1Xtra is a British digital radio station owned and operated by the BBC. It broadcasts black music and urban music, including hip hop and R&B and is a sister station to Radio 1. Launching at 18:00 on 16 August 2002, it had been code named "Network X" during the consultation period. At the time, the station was listed as "1 Xtra BBC" on many electronic programming guides. The station broadcasts from the 8th floor of Broadcasting House, shared with Radio 1 and the Asian Network.

The 1Xtra Chart is a discontinued weekly record chart based on sales of singles in the United Kingdom. It listed the 40 biggest-selling urban music songs released within a three-month time period, and featured genres such as hip hop, R&B, dancehall and rap. The chart was compiled by the Official Charts Company (OCC) on behalf of the UK music industry, and each week's new number one was announced on The 1Xtra Chart at 1 p.m. on Saturdays on BBC Radio 1Xtra. Adele Roberts took over from Sarah-Jane Crawford in spring 2012, and it had been hosted by Ronnie Herel until December 2010. The chart was also listed on the official websites of both BBC Radio 1 and the OCC.

Raoul Lionel Chen, better known as Diztortion, is a Dutch-born songwriter and record producer, best known for his work with the UK artists Stylo G, Lethal Bizzle, Tinie Tempah and Sigma.

He also co-wrote "Mamacita" featuring Wizkid.

Christopher George Palmer, better known as "Mr. Lexx", "Lexxus" or simply "The Prince" is a Jamaican dancehall artist from East Kingston, Jamaica. He is known for the success of his debut album entitled Mr. Lex on the Billboard Reggae Chart and for his collaboration with Wayne Wonder on a track titled "Anything goes" which also featured American rap duo Capone-N-Noreaga for the Red Star Sounds : Def Jamaica compilation, which received a Grammy nomination for best reggae album.

The 2018 Britain and Ireland heatwave was a period of unusually hot weather that took place in June, July and August. It caused widespread drought, hosepipe bans, crop failures, and a number of wildfires. These wildfires worst affected northern moorland areas around the Greater Manchester region, the largest was at Saddleworth Moor and another was at Winter Hill, together these burned over 14 square miles (36 km2) of land over a period of nearly a month.

Kenny Enahoro, known professionally as Kenny Allstar, is a British DJ and radio presenter and grew up in South East London. He is the host of the BBC Radio 1Xtra Rap Show on Friday nights. He also hosts a Mad About Bars series on Mixtape Madness on YouTube, where he hosts freestyle videos with the next generation of MCs.

The 2021 Britain and Ireland heat wave was a period of unusually hot weather in July 2021 that led to record-breaking temperatures in the UK and Ireland.
