The Intelligence is an American rock band from Seattle, formed in 1999. Founded by multi-instrumentalist Lars Finberg (A Frames, Thee Oh Sees), the band currently consists of Finberg, alongside Dave Hernandez (guitar), Drew Church (bass) and Kaanan Tupper (drums).

To date, the band has released nine studio albums, two EPs and a number of singles, the latter often split with other artists. [1]

Biography

The Intelligence was formed by Lars Finberg. Since the late 1990s Finberg played in other bands with vocalist/guitarist Erin Sullivan, and bassist Min Yee (the Dipers, Unnatural Helpers).

A-Frames and the Intelligence started in 1999. Both acts released singles on Dragnet Records, the indie label Finberg runs with A-Frames members Erin Sullivan and Min Yee.

The Intelligence's first release was a 5 track 7-inch EP entitled Girlfriends and Boyfriends on Dragnet Records in 2000. [2] Three years later, two tracks featured on a split 7-inch with the Popular Shapes on Dirtnap Records. [3] This was followed by the two track "Test" 7-inch on S-S Records in 2003. [4] The following year, Finberg recorded some songs at home and with other musicians that were released on their debut album Boredom And Terror. [5] It was released as vinyl with an extra CD, the latter tracks were re-released on vinyl by Polly Maggoo in 2006. [6] [7] After their debut, The Intelligence got signed to In the Red Records who released their second album Icky Baby in 2005. [8] In 2006 the four-track EP Boys Annoy 12-inch was released. [9]

The band opened two shows for The Fall at CMJ. The Intelligence first toured in Europe in 2006.

Country Teasers bassist Kaanan Tupper joined the band supporting the 2007 LP, Deuteronomy. [10] [11]

In 2009, the band released Fake Surfers, featuring a number of guest vocalists and produced by Mike McHugh. [12] They also released Crepuscule With Pacman on the French label Born Bad Records.

Towards the end of the decade, Finberg had moved away from lo-fi recordings made by himself to studio-productions. [13] In 2010, the band released their seventh album, Males. [14] It was recorded with Karate Party/FM Knives guitarist, Chris Woodhouse who joined The Intelligence as a second guitarist. [15] It was followed in 2012 with Everybody’s Got It Easy But Me. [16]

In 2014, the record company re-released both the debut album Boredom and Terror and the content of the original bonus CD on vinyl. [17] In 2015, the band released Vintage Future, [18] and toured as support to FFS in September/October. [19]

The Spits are an American punk rock band formed in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1993. They later moved to Seattle. Currently, the band has released six albums. All are officially self-titled, unofficially titled 1, 2, 3, 4, V, and VI respectively. The albums were released by Nickel and Dime Records, Slovenly Recordings, Dirtnap Records, Thriftstore Records and In the Red Records respectively for the first five. In October 2020, they released their latest album, VI, independently.

Louis Paul Bankston, better known as King Louie Bankston, was an American rock and roll musician from New Orleans. Associated early on with garage punk, he abandoned the genre in 1998 and focused on Louisiana swamp pop, boogie woogie, boogie rock, and power pop. He was best known for his work in the Royal Pendletons, The Persuaders, The Exploding Hearts, and The King Louie One Man Band. Bankston toured Europe and the United States, since the early 1990s. He released 53 records in the vinyl format. Bankston later played music based out of Oakland, California. He lived in New Orleans, Portland, Oregon, and Memphis, Tennessee.

A Frames were an American experimental rock band formed in Seattle, Washington in 1999. The trio consisted of Erin Sullivan, Min Yee and Lars Finberg. Finberg left the band in 2006 to focus on his other project, The Intelligence, and was replaced by Tommy Northcutt who remained with the band thereafter. The band was called Bend Sinister from 1996 to 1999. A Frames cites Cows, Scientists, Stick Men With Ray Guns, Scratch Acid, Joy Division, and 60's garage rock among its influences. A Frames started its own label, Dragnet Records, in January 2000 in order to release their music, and later the band signed with Sub Pop Records in 2004 for the release of Black Forest.

The Ergs! are an American punk rock band formed in 2000 in South Amboy, New Jersey, by three high school friends: drummer/lead vocalist Mikey Erg, guitarist/vocalist Jeff Erg, and bassist Joey Erg. The band developed in the New Brunswick, New Jersey music scene. Through touring and recording the Ergs! became recognized on a national and international level, touring and playing with such noted acts as The Descendents, The Bouncing Souls, Lifetime, Less Than Jake, The Loved Ones, The Gaslight Anthem, Dillinger Four, None More Black, The Explosion, Municipal Waste, Lemuria, and more. They have appeared at a number of festivals including Riot Fest, Insubordination Fest, and The Fest, the latter of which the band played four consecutive years, including as a headlining act in 2008, and making a fifth appearance as a headlining reunion act in 2016.

Climax Golden Twins is an American experimental music band, formed in 1993 in Seattle, Washington by Robert Millis and Jeffery Taylor, who remain the primary song-writers and producers. The group notably performed the soundtrack to the 2001 cult horror film Session 9. Past members have included Dave Abramson, John Vallier and Scott Colburn. Millis and Taylor created the book Victrola Favorites: Artifacts From Bygone Days which documented their respective 78rpm collections and have also worked with members of A Frames as AFCGT releasing several LPs including the self-titled AFCGT on Subpop. Messenger Girls Trio is another related project that features Millis, Taylor, Dave Knott and Sir Richard Bishop that has produced two LPs of improvised collaged acoustic guitar music.
