The North-South Institute

Founded in 1976, The North-South Institute (NSI) is a policy research institution or think tank based in Ottawa, Canada and specializing in international development. The objectives of the institute were as follows:

  1. To promote a greater understanding of the problems and opportunities in the field of international development through high quality and policy-relevant research;
  2. To encourage collaborative research for development that will promote international discussion, policy and action;
  3. To provide a non-governmental space where views on international development can be exchanged;
  4. And to offer an independent and nonpartisan voice that can direct attention to important current and expected issues in international development.

For nearly four decades, NSI endeavored to fulfill these objectives and to pursue the broad goal of reducing global poverty and inequality through effective international development. In think tank rankings, the North-South Institute was recognized as one of the leading think tanks with a budget of less than $5m, and one of the most prominent institutions in Canada. [1]

On September 10, 2014, the North-South Institute announced that it would close. [2] According to a newspaper report, the closure resulted from the decision by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development to no longer fund the institution. [3]

Chatham House Think Tank Organization

Chatham House, also known as the Royal Institute of International Affairs, is an independent policy institute headquartered in London. Its mission is to provide authoritative commentary on world events and offer solutions to global challenges. It is the originator of the Chatham House Rule. Its presidents are Alistair Darling and John Major.

Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars American think tank

The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, located in Washington, D.C., is a United States Presidential Memorial that was established as part of the Smithsonian Institution by an act of Congress in 1968. It is also a highly recognized think tank, and was ranked among the top ten in the world in 2013.

The International Policy Network (IPN) was a think tank based in the City of London, founded 1971, and closed in September 2011. It was a non-partisan, non-profit organization, but critics said it was a "corporate-funded campaigning group". IPN ran campaigns on issues such as trade, development, healthcare and the environment. IPN’s campaigns were pro-free market.

C. D. Howe Institute Canadian non-profit policy research organization

The C. D. Howe Institute is a Canadian nonprofit policy research organization in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It aims to be distinguished by "research that is nonpartisan, evidence-based, and subject to definitive expert review." The institute's office is located in the Trader's Bank Building in downtown Toronto.

The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), established in 1993 by Rehman Sobhan, its Founder chairman, with support from leading civil society institutions in Bangladesh, is mandated by its Deed of Trust to service the growing demand originating from the emerging civil society of Bangladesh for a more participatory and accountable development process. Canadian Policy Research Networks (CPRN) was a non-profit, non-partisan socio-economic think tank based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, with a focus on citizen engagement and policy research and analysis.

The Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) is a non-profit program at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. TTCSP was originally established at the Foreign Policy Research Institute in 1989. The director is James McGann. The program conducts research on policy institutes around the world and maintains a database of over 8,200 think tanks from across the world.

Fundação Getulio Vargas is a Brazilian higher education institution and think tank founded on December 20, 1944, with a mission "To stimulate Brazil’s socioeconomic development". Its initial objective was to prepare qualified people to work in public and private administration in Brazil.

KDI School of Public Policy and Management

The KDI School of Public Policy and Management is a government-run graduate school located in Sejong City, South Korea and is affiliated to the Korea Development Institute (KDI) and a member of the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities, and Social Sciences. The school was first established in 1997 in Dongdaemun District, Seoul, before moving to Sejong City in 2015 under the South Korean government's actions to establish the city as the de facto administrative capital of the country. The school specializes in fostering international experts in the field of development economics and public policy.

The Partnership for Peace Consortium is a network of over 800 defense academies and security studies institutes across 60 countries. Founded in 1998 during the NATO Summit, the PfPC was chartered to promote defense institution building and foster regional stability through multinational education and research, which the PfPC accomplishes via a network of educators and researchers. It is based at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch, Germany. According to the PfPC Annual Report of 2012, in 2012 eight hundred defense academies and security studies institutes in 59 countries worked with the PfPC in 69 defense education/defense institution building and policy-relevant events. The Consortium publishes an academic quarterly journal CONNECTIONS in English and Russian. The journal is run by an international Editorial Board of experts and is distributed to over 1,000 institutions in 54 countries.

Unirule Institute of Economics was a Beijing-based Chinese think tank established in 1993. Unirule conducted research and education in social sciences, primarily in economics, governance, policy, and culture. Unirule was dedicated to the open exchange of ideas in economics in general, with a particular focus on institutional economics. In the University of Pennsylvania’s 2012 Global Go To Think Tanks Report, Unirule ranked 14th in the category of “Best Think Tanks with an Annual Operating Budget under $5M USD”. In August 2019 the institute announced that it would be closing down due to governmental pressure.

Trinità dei Monti (TdM) is an independent and nonprofit think tank based in Rome, Italy. It was de facto founded by Pierluigi Testa in February 2012. The group is composed of more than 400 members.

Canada Strong and Free Network Canadian conservative political advocacy group

The Canada Strong and Free Network based in Calgary, Alberta is a not-for-profit political advocacy group that was established in 2005 by Preston Manning to promote conservative principles. It was known for the annual "high-profile" Manning Networking Conference (MNC). The Manning Centre operates the for-profit think tank the Manning Foundation, which undertakes some research and analysis, while the Manning Centre self-describes as a "do-tank", that focuses on advocacy, training and networking events for conservatives.
