The Orchestra is an iPad app developed and published by Touch Press in partnership with the Music Sales Group, Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Philharmonia Orchestra. The app features performances of eight works representing three centuries of symphonic music. It allows real-time selection of multiple video and audio tracks, along with an automatically synchronized score and graphical note-by-note visualization of each piece as it is played. The result is an immersive environment for exploring the music and every instrument in the orchestra. The app was chosen as Editors’ Choice in the App Store (iOS), and critics praised its scope and design. It was recently included in Apple’s “Your Verse” campaign, a global promotional campaign for the iPad featuring Esa-Pekka Salonen. [1]

Features

The Orchestra introduced a number of innovative features that have since become trademarks of Touch Press apps. The multi-camera video allows users to switch between different angles and sections of the orchestra. The BeatMap is an innovative visualization of the performances that shows different sections of the orchestra pulse in time with the music. The app also uses 3D rotational photography of the different instruments, a technique that Touch Press first brought to the iPad in 2010 with "The Elements." [2] Music critic Mark Swed wrote substantial commentary for each of the pieces. [3]

Reception

The Orchestra received very positive reviews upon release, with Shane Richmond describing the app in a 5 star review for The Daily Telegraph as, “informative and also hypnotic,” and later stating, “With "The Orchestra," Touch Press has made what might be its first app that could not exist in any other form.” [4] Slate called "The Orchestra," “a flat-out astounding new app,” [5] and The Guardian described it as, “a fantastically immersive experience that creates…something new in the field of classical music interactivity.” [6]

Touchpress was an acclaimed app developer and publisher based in Central London. The company specialised in creating in-depth premium apps on educational subjects including the Periodic Table, Beethoven, the Solar System, T.S. Eliot, Shakespeare, and others. Their app "Barefoot World Atlas" was named one of the top 10 apps of all time by Apple. Of Touchpress' "Disney Animated," which was named the best iPad app of 2013 worldwide by Apple, iTunes' App Editor noted, "We’re absolutely spellbound."

The Violin Concerto is the only violin concerto by the Finnish conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen. It was finished in 2009 and has become one of Salonen's major works.

The Second Concerto for Orchestra is a concerto for orchestra by the American composer Steven Stucky. The work was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic while Stucky was their composer-in-residence for the inaugural season of the Walt Disney Concert Hall. It was first performed at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, January 16, 1997, with Salonen conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The piece is dedicated to the orchestra, about which Salonen remarked, "I wrote LA Variations specifically for the players of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The Cello Concerto is a composition for cello and orchestra by the Finnish composer Esa-Pekka Salonen. The work was co-commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Barbican Centre, and the Elbphilharmonie. It was completed in 2017 and was first performed by the cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Salonen on March 9, 2017. The piece is dedicated to Yo-Yo Ma.

Mark Swed is an American music critic who specializes in classical music. Since 1996 he has been the chief classical music critic of the Los Angeles Times where his writings have made him a two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. Prior to his LA Times post, Swed was the chief music crtic for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner and Wall Street Journal, and has contributed other writings to a variety of publications.
