The Paddock Club

The Paddock Club was a dance/night club located at 1008-B Dickinson Avenue in Greenville, North Carolina, that catered primarily to the gay and lesbian community of Greenville and all of Eastern North Carolina. The club was in operation for 30 years and 6 months from June 1973 until December 23, 2003 and was, at the time it closed, the oldest continuously operating LGBT club in the state. After the December 2003 closing, the club reopened for one night for a final farewell party on January 31, 2004.

The Paddock Club, founded by Bill Brock, was originally a Country Western nightclub. In 1973, Brock decided to turn it into a gay club. At that time there were no places east of Raleigh for the LGBT community to gather socially without fear. The first night after the change, Brock greeted his members at the door and told them The Paddock was now a gay club and that he would be glad to refund their membership fees if they were no longer interested in coming to the club. Many accepted his offer, a few did not.^[1]

The Paddock encompassed approximately 5,000 square feet (460 m²) including the main club room where the dance floor and stage was located, a mezzanine level overlooking the approx. 30 ft (9.1 m) wide stage, a large pool room which doubled as a back stage area, an outdoor patio area, a full kitchen, DJ booth, storage and office areas.

The Paddock Club was the birthplace of the Miss Gay North Carolina America Pageant, which is an official preliminary to the Miss Gay America Pageant.^[2] Also born at The Paddock Club was the Miss Greenville Pageant, a preliminary pageant to Miss Gay North Carolina Pageant.^[3] After Miss Gay North Carolina was sold to new promoters, Miss Greenville remained a yearly event at the Paddock Club for 25 years.

As a gay club, it was a surprise when in 2002 Playboy chose the club as "best place to meet chicks". Friday nights' drag shows drew a large number of heterosexual men, making it a good night to mix.^[4]

In December 2003, Brock decided to close the club. The end of a multi-year lease was approaching and by this time Brock was in declining health. The opening of a new gay club in town had also hurt business. On December 26, 2003, Glen Haddock, club manager, made the announcement that it was the last night the club would be open.

The doors opened one more time for a final farewell extravaganza on January 31, 2004. The club was filled to capacity and former bar staff, patrons, and friends all gathered to say goodbye. The bartenders poured out the remaining bar stock throughout the evening free of charge and the entertainers performed while a slide show of images from over the years was projected on the club's screen under the mezzanine.^[5]

A huge "Farewell to Dickinson Avenue" party was held at Limelight Nightclub (in the former Paddock Building) on September 30, 2013. People from the entire history of the club location back to 1973 were in attendance. In October 2013 the former Paddock Club building at 1008-B Dickinson Avenue was demolished by the State of North Carolina to make way for the 10th Street Connector road project which now runs directly over the rear right portion of the former site of the building.

In the summer of 2014 production wrapped up on a feature-length documentary about The Paddock Club entitled: "Dickinson Avenue, The {mostly} True Story of The Paddock Club." The documentary is now available on Blu-Ray disc at www.dickinsonavenuemovie.com

Commemorating the space and the people that made The Paddock Club an indelible part of history, a memorial created from the original steel spiral staircase from the club proudly stands at 1010 Dickinson Avenue and was dedicated on June 29, 2024.

Pan Club Copenhagen was a gay club in central Copenhagen, Denmark which closed in 1994 after having been in operation on various locations in Copenhagen since 1970. However already in 1996 private owners opened a club at the former location with the same name and concept, successfully reviving the club until 2007. Pan was one of Europe's biggest gay clubs and the biggest in Copenhagen. It attracted a large number of people, particularly in the weekends with Saturday being the biggest night. While people of almost all age groups came to the club, it was most popular with younger gay men and lesbians. It also attracted a heterosexual crowd, and in periods it was one of the more fashionable places to go in Copenhagen with many celebrities visiting the club. The club was originally run and owned by "LBL", the Danish national organization for gays, lesbians and bisexuals. The place has since become a commercial venue and has changed owners several times. Most recently, it was taken over by three men, Munir, Rico and Sadi in 2005 until it closed in 2007.

The Miss South Carolina competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of South Carolina in the Miss America pageant. The pageant was first held in Myrtle Beach and moved to Greenville starting in 1958 and remained in that city until the 1990s. Spartanburg hosted the pageant in a few different venues until new leadership took over the organization and moved the pageant to Columbia, SC in 2011. The pageant was televised since the 1960s until the 1998 pageant. Televising was resumed with the 2000 pageant through 2006. The pageant returned to television in 2014.

Miss Gay America is a national pageant for female impersonators. Established in 1972, the pageant is based on the Miss America contest and follows a similar format.

Miss USA 2009 was the 58th Miss USA pageant, held at the Planet Hollywood Theatre for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas, Nevada on April 19, 2009. At the conclusion of the final night of competition, Kristen Dalton of North Carolina was crowned by outgoing titleholder Crystle Stewart of Texas.

She was one of the main performers at the New York City Latino nightclub La Escuelita, where she entertained crowds for almost two decades. She was the first person to win two titles at the Miss Continental pageant in Chicago. Towards the end of her life, she became an advocate for AIDS awareness.

Shawn Hollenbach is an American comedian, writer and actor, based in New York City. He worked at Comedy Central in the programming department. As a comic and actor he has performed around the country and throughout New York. He is an energetic and upbeat performer and self-deprecating humorist focusing on LGBT subjects and a "style that capitalizes on the myriad incidents and accidents that befall us all in the midst of our human existence". He currently works at Logo, Viacom's channel that appeals to the LGBT community and their allies as the social media manager for the channel and its most popular show, RuPaul's Drag Race.

Axis Nightclub is a gay bar and nightclub in The Short North, Columbus, Ohio.

Paradise is a gay nightclub in Asbury Park, New Jersey. It is known for its fundraisers and drag shows, most notable of which is the annual Miss Paradise pageant. The club is integrated with the Empress Hotel; both are owned by record producer Shep Pettibone. Paradise's 1999 opening is credited as one factor that improved Asbury Park's struggling economy and drew the LGBT community back to the city after a period of local unrest. The venue is a popular Jersey Shore destination in the summer, and it has received praise for its welcoming atmosphere. After several months of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Paradise reopened its outdoor pool and bar area in summer 2020.
