The Poliquin Principles: Successful Methods for Strength and Mass Development is a 1997 bodybuilding and strength training book by Charles Poliquin, former strength and conditioning coach of the Canadian Olympic team, and strength coach of several athletes competing in the NHL and other professional and amateur sporting organizations. The book contains a basic formatting of Poliquin's training methods and regimens. Intended for the purpose of helping athletes to improve at their sport and non-athletes to gain muscle mass, it has become a well-known work in its field.

The Poliquin Principles has been described as being accessible to the beginner,[ citation needed ] and also of use to the more advanced trainer. [1] The book is extremely well researched and contains references to studies done on several continents. Other reviews were positive overall, [1] but criticized the layout and poor photos which did not serve much illustrative purpose. [1]

Indian clubs, or meels, are a type of exercise equipment used to present resistance in movement to develop strength and mobility. They consist of juggling-club shaped wooden clubs of varying sizes and weights, which are swung in certain patterns as part of a strength exercise program. They can range in weight from a few pounds each to special clubs that can weigh as much as up to 100 pounds. They were used in carefully choreographed routines in which the clubs were swung in unison by a group of exercisers, led by an instructor,‌ the way it is still practiced in Varzesh-e Bastani in Iran and similar to 21st-century aerobics or zumba classes. The routines would vary according to the group's ability along with the weights of the clubs being used. When the 19th-century British colonists came across exercising clubs in India, they named them Indian clubs.

Periodization is a cyclical method of planning and managing athletic or physical training and involves progressive cycling of various aspects of a training program during a specific period. Conditioning programs can use periodization to break up the training program into the off-season, preseason, inseason, and the postseason. Periodization divides the year round condition program into phases of training which focus on different goals.

Otherwise, sport is considered as any physical activity where the individuals engage for competition and health. Sport psychology is recognized as an interdisciplinary science that draws on knowledge from many related fields including biomechanics, physiology, kinesiology and psychology. It involves the study of how psychological factors affect performance and how participation in sport and exercise affect psychological and physical factors. Sport psychologists teach cognitive and behavioral strategies to athletes in order to improve their experience and performance in sports.

A strength and conditioning coach is a physical performance professional who uses exercise prescription to improve the performance of competitive athletes or athletic teams. This is achieved through the combination of strength training, aerobic conditioning, and other methods.
