The Sicilian Vespers is the title of three works by the Italian artist Francesco Hayez, all showing the outbreak of the Sicilian Vespers. [1]
Measuring 150 × 200 cm, the first version was commissioned by the Marchioness Visconti d'Aragona. Hayez produced it in the Brera studio in Milan in 1822. [1] The second version measures 91 × 114 cm and was commissioned in 1826–1827 by Count Arese, recently released from prison. [1] Both versions are now in private collections, while the third version (225 × 300 cm), produced in 1846, is now in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome. [1] That version was produced for Vincenzo Ruffo, Prince of Sant'Antimo, Hayez's main patron. [2] This painting and a portrait of Ruffo's wife Sarah Louise Strachan Ruffo were two of several paintings produced for Ruffo while Hayez was staying in the Ruffo family home in Naples. [3]
The Sicilian Vespers was a successful rebellion on the island of Sicily that broke out at Easter 1282 against the rule of the French-born king Charles I of Anjou, who had ruled the Kingdom of Sicily since 1266. The revolt came after twenty years of Angevin rule over Sicily, whose policies were deeply unpopular among the Sicilian populace.

In 1982 he moved to Milan to teach Design and Art History at the XIII High School. In 1986 he held the chair of architecture at the Art School "Pietro Aldi" in Grosseto until retirement. From 1957 to 2011 he took part in demonstrations in graphics and painting in Italy and abroad, receiving reports from the most qualified critics and several awards.
The Museo Arte Gallarate or MAGA is a museum of modern and contemporary art in Gallarate, in the province of Varese in Lombardy in northern Italy. It was founded in 1966 as the Civica Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Gallarate to house works purchased from, and donated by, artists participating in the Premio Gallarate, a national art competition. It was renamed in 2010 and moved to a new building. The museum holds over 5000 works and the collection includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, graphic design works, photographs, and installations by artists including Carlo Carrà, Loris Cecchini, Gianni Colombo, Mario Bardi, Lucio Fontana, Ennio Morlotti, Bruno Munari and Studio Azzurro. Contemporary art works are housed in the Palazzo Leone Da Perego, in Legnano, some 15 km to the south-east of Gallarate.
