The Song of Scorpions is a 2017 Swiss-French-Singaporean Rajasthani language drama film written and directed by Anup Singh. Produced by Feather Light Films [1] and KNM, the films stars Golshifteh Farahani [2] as a tribal woman learning the ancient art of healing and Irrfan Khan as a camel trader in his final film role.
The Song of Scorpions had its world premiere at the 70th Locarno Film Festival in Locarno, Switzerland on August 9, 2017. [3]
According to an ancient myth, the sting of a scorpion in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan can cause death in less than 24 hours and the only cure is the song sung by a scorpion singer which counters the poison of the scorpion.
Nooran is an independent young woman living in a far-flung, traditional village in the desert in western Rajasthan. She comes from a tribe of scorpion singers and works as one, i.e., she heals scorpion stings by singing the song of scorpions. Nooran is a beginner, yet she does not hesitate from taking up cases because it is a source of income for her. The villagers disapprove of her because of her independence and shrewdness. Even Nooran’s grandmother, Zubaida, an expert scorpion singer, rebukes her and tells her that she won’t ever accept the money Nooran earns by swindling poor people. Nooran cannot disappoint Zubaida as she loves her grandmother very much and she is the only one she has in the world. Nooran keeps some money from her hard-earned income and gives the rest to her friend, Amina, to donate at the local dargah in the village.
On one of her outings, Nooran catches the eye of a camel-trader named Adam. Adam falls instantly in love with Nooran and proposes marriage to Nooran who does not respond. Adam is thrashed by the men of Nooran’s village as he had tried to outrage the modesty of one of their women. Nooran later on confides in Amina about Adam, but it is not clear if she has feelings for him.
One night, Nooran gets a call that Adam’s young accomplice, Munna, has been bitten by a scorpion. Zubaida is hesitant about sending Nooran alone in the night, but Nooran accepts the task. Upon reaching Munna, Nooran realised that it was a trap. Munna rapes Nooran.
In the morning, Amina brings a wounded and traumatised Nooran home where Nooran gets another shock. Zubaida was missing. Nooran looks for her grandmother everywhere, but Zubaida is nowhere to be found. Out of grief and despair, Nooran locks herself up in the house. When Amina comes to check on Nooran, she finds young men outside the house, passing lewd comments on Nooran.
The villagers decide that Nooran be sent out of the village as she has brought a bad name upon them. The women openly suggest that Nooran go to a city and continue doing there what she’s done in the village, i.e., earn her livelihood by curing people through her half-learned skill or by selling herself. With Amina by her side, Nooran resists, but both friends know that nothing was in their hands.
Her helplessness drives Nooran to accept Adam’s marriage proposal. It is only when Nooran moves to Adam’s house after marriage that she comes to know that Adam is married and is father to a teenage daughter, Ayesha. Reluctantly, Nooran tries to adjust to her new circumstances and becomes a friend to Ayesha.
One night, after an altercation, Adam releases a scorpion upon Munna. Munna, bitten by the scorpion and in agony, asks Adam why he did so when he carried out everything that Adam asked him to do, implying that Munna raped Nooran upon Adam’s instructions and that Zubaida’s disappearance too could have been orchestrated by Adam.
A dying Munna comes to Nooran and reveals everything to her. Shocked, Nooran is unable to save Munna. She buries his dead body in the sand.
Nooran is revealed to be pregnant. While the female relatives celebrate, Nooran is miserable. It is not clear if the child Nooran is carrying is Munna’s or Adam’s.
Adam returns home one day to find Nooran missing. He goes looking for her in the dunes and finds that Nooran has let one of her pet scorpions bite her. While Nooran accuses Adam of all that he has done to her, a regretful Adam tells Nooran that he truly loves her, before letting one of Nooran’s scorpions bite him. It is then that Nooran starts singing a song of scorpions, but it is not known whether that song was meant to save herself or Adam or both of them.
It was reported that the lead actors of the film Irrfan Khan and Golshifteh Farahani began shooting for the film in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan in December 2015. [4]
The Song of Scorpions had its world premiere on the Piazza Grande at the 70th Locarno Film Festival in Locarno, Switzerland on August 9, 2017. It has released in India on 28 April 2023. It is being presented by Panorama Spotlight and 70 MM Talkies. [5] [6] [7]
Gautaman Bhaskaran of The Hindustan Times rated the film highly, saying "The Song of Scorpions is a story set on the undulating golden sands of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan, the sights and sounds of the mesmeric atmosphere caught most imaginatively by cinematographer Pietro Zuercher. I was bowled over by the light and shade contrasts he presents - the harshness of the daytime desert rubbing shoulders with the darkness of a night illuminated by the light of a million stars, twinkling away and guiding Singh’s folktale narrated through pain, pathos, love, humiliation, revenge, pardon and forgiveness. I think Singh has this unique ability to fathom the human mind, and in a way, his plot resembles a Shakespearean drama - sans the drama." [8]
Boyd van Hoeij of The Hollywood Reporter commended the cinematography of the film saying that, "The film is absolutely gorgeous to look at, with Swiss cinematographers Pietro Zuercher and Carlotta Holy-Steinemann relishing the opportunity to film a country that looks so unlike their own"." [9]
Allan Hunter of Screen Daily praised the cinematography, direction and acting performances in the film saying that, "Although leisurely in places, The Song Of Scorpions retains its grip, especially as we grow more involved in Nooran’s refusal to become a victim and her response to the many challenges placed in her path. The material could easily have lent itself to melodrama or sentimentality but Singh’s understated direction lends it a steely conviction that is further underpinned by some deft casting." [10]
Tezaab (transl. Acid) is a 1988 Indian Hindi-language action romance film starring Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit in lead roles. The film gave Dixit her first big break, making her an overnight star in addition to reaffirming Kapoor's star status, after a successful Mr. India (1987). Irrfan Khan was an Indian actor who worked in Indian cinema as well as British and American films. Widely regarded as one of the finest actors in world cinema, Khan's career spanned over 30 years and earned him numerous accolades, including a National Film Award, an Asian Film Award, and six Filmfare Awards. In 2011, he was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour. In 2021, he was posthumously awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.

She is known for her performances in M for Mother (2006), Body of Lies (2008), About Elly (2009), The Patience Stone (2012), Paterson (2016), Girls of the Sun (2018), Extraction (2020) and its sequel Extraction 2 (2023), and Invasion (2021–present). She was nominated for the Most Promising Actress Award for The Patience Stone at the 2014 César Awards.

Madaari (transl. Puppeteer) is a 2016 Indian social thriller film directed by Nishikant Kamat. It is produced by Shailesh R Singh, Madan Paliwal, Sutapa Sikdar, and Shailja Kejriwal and co-produced by Nishant Pitti from Easemytrip. The film stars Irrfan Khan, Vishesh Bansal, Jimmy Shergill, Tushar Dalvi and Nitesh Pandey and was released on 22 July 2016. This was Nishikant Kamat's last film as director before his death on 17 August 2020. Upon release, it received positive reviews and was a sleeper hit at the box office, but in later years it became a cult classic.
Nooran Sisters are Sultana Nooran and Jyoti Nooran, an Indian devotional Sufi singing duo. Born to a family of Sufi musicians, they perform Sham Chaurasia gharana classical music. They gained public recognition in 2012, when their song "Tung Tung" was featured on MTV Sound Trippin of MTV India and was used in the soundtrack for the 2015 film Singh is Bling.

The film stars Irrfan Khan and debuting Malayalam actress Parvathy Thiruvothu in the lead roles and had a worldwide release on 10 November 2017.
Blackmail is a 2018 Indian Hindi-language black comedy film co-produced and directed by Abhinay Deo. The film stars Irrfan Khan, Kirti Kulhari, Arunoday Singh and Divya Dutta in lead roles and is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Apurba Sengupta and Rohit KaduDeshmukh under the banner of T-Series Films and RDP Motion Pictures. Blackmail depicts the life of a married-man in his late 30s stuck in a full day-time job and unexciting life but things turn after he finds that his wife is having an extramarital affair. The film had its theatrical release in India on 6 April 2018 and turned out to be a Sleeper Hit at the box office.
Bioscopewala is an Indian Hindi-language drama film directed by Deb Medhekar, and produced by Sunil Doshi. The film stars Danny Denzongpa and Geetanjali Thapa in lead roles and had its world premiere at the 30th Tokyo International Film Festival on 28 October 2017. The film is an adaptation of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore's 1892 short story Kabuliwala and released on 25 May 2018 in India. The official trailer of the film was released on YouTube by Fox Star Studios on 8 May 2018. Bioscopewala has taken forward the timeline of Kabuliwala, the original story written by Rabindranath Tagore, from the 19th century to somewhere in the 1980s during the Taliban regime and changed the profession of Rehmat, the central character, from a dry fruit seller to a man who goes around showing films to children through his bioscope.
"Lag Jaa Gale" is a Hindi song with music by Madan Mohan Kohli and lyrics by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, written for the 1964 Hindi film Woh Kaun Thi? under the music label Saregama. On the screen, the song was performed by the film's star Sadhana, though actually sung by playback singer Lata Mangeshkar.
Angrezi Medium is a 2020 Indian Hindi-language comedy drama film directed by Homi Adajania and produced under the production banner Maddock Films. A standalone sequel to the 2017 film Hindi Medium, the film stars Irrfan Khan, Radhika Madan, Deepak Dobriyal and Kareena Kapoor Khan in an extended special appearance. Filming began in Udaipur on 5 April 2019 and was completed by July in London. This was Irrfan's final film to be released before his death on 29 April 2020.
Mame Khan is an Indian playback and folk singer from Rajasthan, India. He has been playback singer for numerous Hindi films such as Luck By Chance (2009), I Am (2010), No One Killed Jessica (2011), Mirzya (2016) and Sonchiriya (2019). Khan was featured on Coke Studio @ MTV along with Amit Trivedi, the duo performed the track Chaudhary. He received the Best Folk Single Award at Global Indian Music Academy Awards (GiMA) 2016. Mame Khan was first ever Folk artist to walk the Red Carpet at The Cannes Film Festival in 2022 and to perform at the Indian pavilion at Cannes. Mame Khan's most recent folk, Sufi, fusion album named "Desert Rose" was released on 13 October 2022.
