The South Austin Moonlighters is an American Americana band from Austin, Texas. Their album, Travel Light, charted at #1 on the Alternative-Country charts in 2019 [1] with single, Machine Gun Kelly charting at #11 on the Top Alternative Country Song Chart for the Year of 2019. [2] They have performed at SXSW [3] and The Dallas International Guitar Music Festival [4] and have shared the stage with Gin Blossoms, [5] Cory Morrow, [6] Eric Gales, Sonny Landreth, [4] and others.

Music career

In 2011, The South Austin Moonlighters was founded by Aaron Beavers, Phil Hurley, Josh Zee, Steven Collins & singer/songwriter/bass player Lonnie Trevino Jr. (Fastball, Monte Montgomery, [7] and Mike Zito [8] ) in Austin, Texas. [9] The original band members [10] began performing a weekday residency at the Saxon Pub in Austin as a "moonlighting" band as they were all in playing in different bands at the time. Soon afterward they became an established band. [11] [12]

Travel Light, released in 2019, charted at #1 on the Alternative-Country charts. [1] On the Top Alternative Country Song Chart for the Year of 2019, singles Machine Gun Kelly charted at #11, Feels Like Home #24, and Nowhere Left to Run #25. [2] Travel Light's music video was premiered in an article on Cowboys & Indians. [13]

The band has performed live on numerous video streaming radio stations including Texas Red Dirt Roads Radio [14] and Austin City Limits Radio. [15]

In 2023 the band released the 10 track album, From Here to Home, produced by Steve Berlin from the band, Los Lobos. [16] [17]

The album received favorable reviews and charted in the Top 100 Albums of 2023 on the Alternative Country Chart. [18] [19] Paul Russell of Americana UK wrote, "There isn’t a dud track on this album and it’s testament to the quality of the songwriting and production, as well as the sheer classy musicianship of the band, that this is as good an album as it is". [17]

In 2019 the band released, Travel Light, produced by Anders Osborne. [21] [22] Osbourne suggested that the band record the album at a destination recording studio as they wouldn't have any outside distractions. In an interview with Ditty TV, Trevino Jr. said, We are always most proud of the last piece of art you accomplish, right? That being said, I really do believe this album is more focused than any other album we’ve produced in the past. Our producer, Anders Osborne, made sure of that. In the past, we would record a record with many genres, moods, and/or vibes in mind; just like the bands and records we grew up with. We all write and sing, so in past albums we were all over the map, like say The Beatles’ "White Album" or The Kinks’ "The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society". [23]

Ghost of a Small Town was recorded at Chris Beall’s (lead guitar/lead vocals) at-home studio, and was self-produced by the band. "Initially we were thinking of just using my studio a few times to get some ideas down, but it all started sounding really good so we just kept coming back and putting down more songs" said Chris Beall. The album was released on Waterloo Records, [10] garnering radio airplay and a European distribution deal. [24]

Burn & Shine was the band's debut album, recorded in 2013. During SXSW 2012, record labels from Europe were interested in seeing The South Austin Moonlighters perform which resulted in the band signing with German record label, Blue Rose Records, releasing Burn & Shine in 2014 in Europe and Scadinavia. [26] [27] "Outstanding, effortlessly organic music that oozes with joy, soul and groove", said The Austin Observer. [28]

Pedro Alejandro Escovedo is an American rock musician, songwriter, and singer, who has been recording and touring since the late 1970s. His primary instrument is the guitar. He has played in various rock genres, including punk rock, roots rock and alternative country, and is most closely associated with the music scene in Austin, Texas but also San Francisco and New York. He comes from a family of musicians.

South by Southwest, abbreviated as SXSW and colloquially referred to as South By, is an annual conglomeration of parallel film, interactive media, and music festivals and conferences organized jointly that take place in mid-March in Austin, Texas, United States. It began in 1987 and has continued growing in both scope and size every year. In 2017, the conference lasted for 10 days with the interactive track lasting for five days, music for seven days, and film for nine days. There was no in-person event in 2020 and 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in Austin, Texas; in both years there was a smaller online event instead.

Ricardo Treviño Jr., known professionally as Rick Trevino, is an American country music artist. Signed to Columbia Nashville in 1993, Trevino began his career that year with the release of his debut single "Just Enough Rope", the first mainstream country music single to feature separate English and Spanish versions. The song was included on his debut album Dos Mundos; a self-titled album followed a year later. Trevino has charted a total of fourteen singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and recorded seven studio albums. His highest-charting single, "Running Out of Reasons to Run", reached No. 1 on that chart in 1996.

The Greencards are an American progressive bluegrass band that formed in 2003 in Austin, Texas, and relocated in 2005 to Nashville, Tennessee. The band was founded by Englishman Eamon McLoughlin and Australians Kym Warner and Carol Young. The musicians originally performed in local Austin bars, and soon found increasing acclaim. They have released one independent album, Movin' On, in 2003, and two albums, Weather and Water and Viridian, on the Dualtone record label. Their fourth album, Fascination, was released on Sugar Hill in 2009. Their fifth album, The Brick Album (2011), was self-produced with the direct support of their fans. Pre-production donors were recognized with their names inscribed on the "bricks" that make up the cover art.

The Lumineers are an American alternative folk band based in Denver, Colorado. The founding members are Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites. Schultz and Fraites began writing and performing together in Ramsey, New Jersey, in 2005. Cellist and vocalist Neyla Pekarek joined the band in 2010, and was a member until 2018. The Lumineers emerged as one of the most popular folk-rock/Americana artists during the revival of those genres, their popularity growing in the 2010s. Pat Byrne is an Irish singer songwriter from Borris, County Carlow. In 2012, Byrne was crowned the winner of the first series of The Voice of Ireland, which led to the release of his debut album, "All or Nothing." In January 2019, Byrne emigrated to Austin, Texas, after several previous visits to the city that included recording sessions for the album Rituals, released in October 2018. Byrne had well-received performances in 2019 at the 30A Festival, SXSW, Kerrville Folk Festival and Nashville's Americana Festival. In July 2021, Byrne released his third album, "Into the Light."

The Austin Chronicle gave the release 3.5/5 stars, writing that "it's too early to declare The Limestone Kid debut of the year, but it's already one to beat", and comparing McCollum's music to Charlie Robison's. McCollum and his backing band announced a 2015 tour of Texas in support of the album, performing at events such as RedGorilla Music Fest. McCollum released the EP Probably Wrong: Session One on July 7, 2017, and followed it with Probably Wrong: Session Two on September 8, 2017. The full Probably Wrong album was released on November 10, 2017. His major-label debut album Gold Chain Cowboy was released July 30, 2021.

Jamestown Revival is an American folk duo made up of Zach Chance and Jonathan Clay. The childhood friends from Magnolia, Texas, write songs about everyday life that are a combination of harmonies that merge Southern country, Americana and Western rock music. Their first album Utah was originally self-released in early 2014 and then re-released by Republic Records later the same year. iTunes named Utah Best of 2014: Singer-Songwriter Album of the Year. Jamestown Revival has been featured in Rolling Stone magazine and covered in the Wall Street Journal. The band has made appearances at music festivals in the U.S., including the South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival in Austin, Texas, Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Austin City Limits Music Festival, and a musical appearance on Conan.

Moonlight Social is an American pop rock music duo composed of singer-songwriters Jeremy Burchard and Jennica Scott. Their music has been described as a combination of alternative rock, pop, pop punk, folk, and adult contemporary.
