The Super Stocks were a California studio band created by Gary Usher in 1964 to capitalize on the popularity of surf music and hot rods. Usher's bands distinguished themselves from other studio creations by the quality of the session musicians - the Super Stocks made use of Wrecking Crew session musicians, including guitarist Glen Campbell. The Honeys

The Honeys were an American girl group formed in Los Angeles in 1961. Their line-up consisted of Marilyn Rovell, her sister Diane Rovell, and their cousin Ginger Blake. The group were a kind of female counterpart to the Beach Boys, described as "the world's first female surfing vocal combo" by Music Vendor in April 1963. Bandleader Brian Wilson served as the Honeys' record producer and chief songwriter, and later married Marilyn in late 1964. After 1969, they remained mostly inactive. In the 1970s, Marilyn and Diane formed another short-lived group, American Spring, also with participation from Wilson.

Gary Lee Usher was an American rock musician, songwriter, and record producer who worked with numerous California acts in the 1960s, including the Byrds, the Beach Boys, and Dick Dale. Usher also produced fictitious surf groups or hot rod groups mixing studio session musicians with his own troops. These bands include the Super-Stocks, with the hot-rod song "Midnight Run", and the Kickstands.

The California sound is a popular music aesthetic that originates with American pop and rock recording artists from Southern California in the early 1960s. At first, it was conflated with the California myth, an idyllic setting inspired by the state's beach culture that commonly appeared in the lyrics of commercial pop songs. Later, the sound was expanded outside its initial geography and subject matter and was developed to be more sophisticated, often featuring studio experimentation.

Surf Route 101 is a 1964 album by the Super Stocks, one of Gary Usher's ad-hoc surf and hot-rod studio groups. The band's line up featured some of the best surf musicians of the period including Glen Campbell. The title track "Surf Route 101" was a cover of a song from Jan and Dean's 1963 album Drag City. Brian Wilson had collaborated with Usher on "My First Love" and "Muscle Beach Party" for the 1964 film Muscle Beach Party, where they were originally performed by Dick Dale and his Del-Tones. For the Super Stocks album Usher re-used the original backing tracks made for the film.
