The Vine Trust is an international charity based in Leith, Scotland. It is involved in volunteer programs and the delivery of medical projects, principally the Amazon Hope project in Peru and the Jubilee Hope project in Tanzania. A common thread in both projects is the use of medical missionary ships to deliver health care to remote communities. The Vine Trust has a wholly owned subsidiary, the Programa Medico Esperanza Amazonica del Peru (PMEAP), through which it operates in Peru. [1]

The trust was established in 1985, founded by Albert Bogle, a minister of the Church of Scotland and former Moderator of the General Assembly of that church. The Vine Trust has the patronage of Anne, Princess Royal. [2]

Albert Orr Bogle is a minister of the Church of Scotland. On 25 October 2011 he was nominated to be Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland for 2012-2013; he was duly formally elected as Moderator on 19 May 2012 - the first day of the General Assembly's week-long annual session.

The Church of Scotland, also known by its Scots language name, the Kirk, is the national church of Scotland. It is Presbyterian and adheres to the Bible and Westminster Confession; the Church of Scotland celebrates two sacraments, Baptism and the Lord's Supper, as well as five other rites, such as confirmation and matrimony. It is a member of the World Communion of Reformed Churches.

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland is the minister or elder chosen to moderate (chair) the annual General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, which is held for a week in Edinburgh every year. After chairing the Assembly, the Moderator then spends the following year representing the Church of Scotland at civic events, and visiting congregations and projects in Scotland and beyond. Because the Church of Scotland is Scotland's national church, and a presbyterian church has no bishops, the Moderator is a prominent figure in the life of Church of Scotland adherents.

The charity's headquarters are on a former naval oil barge, converted into offices and conference facilities, and moored in Leith Docks. [3]

Projects in Peru

Amazon Hope is a project based in Loreto in northern Peru, run by PMEAP. The project operates two medical ships – Amazon Hope 2 and Forth Hope . The medical ships make monthly trips along the Amazon and other rivers in Loreto to provide medical assistance to rural riverside communities. The project plans to also look at the possibility of supporting public health, health education and safe water in partnership with the regional and national governments. [1] [2]

MV <i>Forth Hope</i> Medical missionary ship

The MV Forth Hope is a medical missionary ferry, operated by the Vine Trust as part of the charity’s Amazon Hope project. The ship operates on the Amazon River from a base in Iquitos in Peru.

Projects in Tanzania

Jubilee Hope is a project based in the Lake Victoria area of Tanzania, working in association with local health authorities and the Africa Inland Church Tanzania (AICT). The project operates a medical ship, the Jubilee Hope (MMSI: 236111935), delivering health care to remote island communities on the lake. Gibraltar British Overseas Territory

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It has an area of 6.7 km2 (2.6 sq mi) and is bordered to the north by Spain. The landscape is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar at the foot of which is a densely populated town area, home to over 30,000 people, primarily Gibraltarians.

HIV/AIDS Spectrum of conditions caused by HIV infection

Human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) is a spectrum of conditions caused by infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Following initial infection, a person may not notice any symptoms or may experience a brief period of influenza-like illness. Typically, this is followed by a prolonged period with no symptoms. As the infection progresses, it interferes more with the immune system, increasing the risk of developing common infections such as tuberculosis, as well as other opportunistic infections, and tumors that rarely affect people who have uncompromised immune systems. These late symptoms of infection are referred to as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). This stage is often also associated with unintended weight loss.

Malaria Mosquito-borne infectious disease

Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease that affects humans and other animals. Malaria causes symptoms that typically include fever, tiredness, vomiting, and headaches. In severe cases it can cause yellow skin, seizures, coma, or death. Symptoms usually begin ten to fifteen days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. If not properly treated, people may have recurrences of the disease months later. In those who have recently survived an infection, reinfection usually causes milder symptoms. This partial resistance disappears over months to years if the person has no continuing exposure to malaria.

Leith Hospital Hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland

Leith Hospital was situated on Mill Lane in Leith, Edinburgh, and was a general hospital with adult medical and surgical wards, paediatric medical and surgical wards, a casualty department and a wide range of out-patient services. It closed in 1987.
