Thenjiwe Mtintso (7 November 1950) is a South African anti-apartheid activist,politician and ambassador who has held senior positions within the African National Congress (ANC),the South African Communist Party (SACP),and is a veteran of uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK). [1]
Thenjiwe was born and raised in Soweto,Johannesburg. She is daughter to Hanna " MaRadebe" Mtintso and Gana Makabeni,who also served as a trade unionist and member of the African National Congress (ANC). [2] [3] Thenjiwe became a student activist in the South African Student Organisation (SASO) and Black Consciousness Movement (BCM) during her studies at the University of Fort Hare.
One of Thenjiwe’s most notable encounters with the Apartheid law,was when she was arrested in October 1976. While still in detention,she was charged with a 5-year ban in December 1976. Following 282 days in jail,she and Joyce Mokhesi were released. [1]
In 1978,when Steve Biko,an activist with whom she had worked with,was murdered by the police while being held in custody,she went into exile. In the wake of Biko's death,she moved to Lesotho to join Umkhonto we Sizwe (Zulu and Xhosa:"Spear of the Nation"),the armed wing of the ANC,and the SACP. [1]
She was elected to Parliament following South Africa's first multiracial elections in 1994,she was Chair of the Commission of Gender Equality in 1997. [4] Since 2007,she has served as South Africa's ambassador to Cuba,Italy,Romania,Malawi and Spain. [2] [5]
The African National Congress (ANC) is a social-democratic political party in South Africa. It has been in power since the election of lawyer,activist and former political prisoner Nelson Mandela at the first free and fair elections in 1994,and has been re-elected at every election since,though with a reduced majority every time since 2004. Cyril Ramaphosa,the incumbent President of South Africa,has served as President of the ANC since 18 December 2017.
Bantu Stephen Biko was a South African anti-apartheid activist. Ideologically an African nationalist and African socialist,he was at the forefront of a grassroots anti-apartheid campaign known as the Black Consciousness Movement during the late 1960s and 1970s. His ideas were articulated in a series of articles published under the pseudonym Frank Talk.
The South African Communist Party (SACP) is a communist party in South Africa. It was founded in 1921 as the Communist Party of South Africa (CPSA),tactically dissolved itself in 1950 in the face of being declared illegal by the governing National Party under the Suppression of Communism Act,1950. The Communist Party was reconstituted underground and re-launched as the SACP in 1953,participating in the struggle to end the apartheid system. It is a member of the ruling Tripartite Alliance alongside the African National Congress and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and through this it influences the South African government. The party's Central Committee is the party's highest decision-making structure.
Govan Archibald Mvuyelwa Mbeki was a South African politician,military commander,Communist leader who served as the Secretary of Umkhonto we Sizwe,at its inception in 1961. He was also the son of Chief Sikelewu Mbeki and Johanna Mahala and also the father of the former South African president Thabo Mbeki and political economist Moeletsi Mbeki. He was a leader of the South African Communist Party and the African National Congress. After the Rivonia Trial,he was imprisoned (1963–1987) on charges of terrorism and treason,together with Nelson Mandela,Walter Sisulu,Raymond Mhlaba,Ahmed Kathrada and other eminent ANC leaders,for their role in the ANC's armed wing,Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK). He was sometimes mentioned by his nickname "Oom Gov".
Raymond Mphakamisi Mhlaba was an anti-apartheid activist,Communist and leader of the African National Congress (ANC) also as well the first premier of the Eastern Cape. Mhlaba spent 25 years of his life in prison. Well known for being sentenced,along with Nelson Mandela,Govan Mbeki,Walter Sisulu and others in the Rivonia Trial,he was an active member of the ANC and the South African Communist Party (SACP) all his adult life. His kindly manner brought him the nickname "Oom Ray".
Chris Hani,born Martin Thembisile Hani was the leader of the South African Communist Party and chief of staff of uMkhonto we Sizwe,the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC). He was a fierce opponent of the apartheid government,and was assassinated by Janusz Waluś,a Polish immigrant and sympathiser of the Conservative opposition on 10 April 1993,during the unrest preceding the transition to democracy.

The Black People's Convention (BPC) was a national coordinating body for the Black Consciousness Movement of South Africa. The BPC was active in the Anti-Apartheid Movement from its establishment in 1972 until its banning in late 1977.

There have been a number of political assassinations in post-apartheid South Africa. In 2013 it was reported that there had been more than 450 political assassinations in the province of KwaZulu-Natal since the end of apartheid in 1994. In July 2013 the Daily Maverick reported that there had been "59 political murders in the last five years". In August 2016 it was reported that there had been at least twenty political assassinations in the run up to the local government elections on the 3rd of August that year,most of them in KwaZulu-Natal.
Tryphina Mboxela Jokweni was a female operative of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK),an armed military wing of the African National Congress (ANC). The ANC is currently the governing party in South Africa. Mrs Tryphina Mboxela Jokweni was popularly known as Mboxela in the neighbourhood. She died of illness at her house at Umlazi Township in the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Province at the age of 77 in 2002. Mboxela was the mother of three children.
Chupu Stanley Mathabatha is a South African politician and the current premier of the Limpopo province. Mathabatha is a former Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) guerrilla,he is also the Provincial Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in Limpopo Province since February 2014.
Sonia Bunting,OLS was a South African journalist,and a political and anti-apartheid activist. After being charged with treason and imprisoned,being detained a second time,and barred from publishing,she and her husband went into exile in London,where she joined the Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM) and organised the World Campaign for the Release of South African Political Prisoners. When the African National Congress (ANC) ban was lifted in 1991,she returned to South Africa where she was involved in political activism until her death in 2001. She was posthumously honored by the government of South Africa with the Order of Luthuli in Silver in 2010.
Maximum Security Prison is an inactive prison at Robben Island in Table Bay,6.9 kilometers (4.3 mi) west of the coast of Bloubergstrand,Cape Town,South Africa. It is prominent because Nobel Laureate and former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela was imprisoned there for 18 of the 27 years he served behind bars before the fall of apartheid. After that,three former inmates of this prison Nelson Mandela,Kgalema Motlanthe,and Jacob Zuma have gone on to become President of South Africa.
Devikarani Priscilla Sewpal Jana was a South African human rights lawyer,politician and diplomat of Indian descent. As a member of the African National Congress (ANC) during the anti-apartheid movement,she participated in both legal activism as well as in the underground movement to end apartheid. She represented many significant figures in the movement,including South African president Nelson Mandela,Winnie Madikizela-Mandela,Steve Biko,Govan Mbeki,Walter Sisulu,and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Jana was one of the very few South Africans who had access to political prisoners,including Mandela,in the maximum security Robben Island prison,and served as an emissary for coded messages between the political prisoners and the ANC leadership.
