Thenjiwe Mtintso (7 November 1950) is a South African anti-apartheid activist,politician and ambassador who has held senior positions within the African National Congress (ANC),the South African Communist Party (SACP),and is a veteran of uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK). [1]
Thenjiwe was born and raised in Soweto,Johannesburg. She is daughter to Hanna " MaRadebe" Mtintso and Gana Makabeni,who also served as a trade unionist and member of the African National Congress (ANC). [2] [3] Thenjiwe became a student activist in the South African Student Organisation (SASO) and Black Consciousness Movement (BCM) during her studies at the University of Fort Hare.
One of Thenjiwe’s most notable encounters with the Apartheid law,was when she was arrested in October 1976. While still in detention,she was charged with a 5-year ban in December 1976. Following 282 days in jail,she and Joyce Mokhesi were released. [1]
In 1978,when Steve Biko,an activist with whom she had worked with,was murdered by the police while being held in custody,she went into exile. In the wake of Biko's death,she moved to Lesotho to join Umkhonto we Sizwe (Zulu and Xhosa:"Spear of the Nation"),the armed wing of the ANC,and the SACP. [1]
She was elected to Parliament following South Africa's first multiracial elections in 1994,she was Chair of the Commission of Gender Equality in 1997. [4] Since 2007,she has served as South Africa's ambassador to Cuba,Italy,Romania,Malawi and Spain. [2] [5]

It originated as a liberation movement known for its opposition to apartheid and has governed the country since 1994,when the first post-apartheid election resulted in Nelson Mandela being elected as President of South Africa. Cyril Ramaphosa,the incumbent national President,has served as President of the ANC since 18 December 2017.
The South African Communist Party (SACP) is a communist party in South Africa. It was founded in 12 February 1921 as the Communist Party of South Africa (CPSA),tactically dissolved itself in 1950 in the face of being declared illegal by the governing National Party under the Suppression of Communism Act,1950. The Communist Party was reconstituted underground and re-launched as the SACP in 1953,participating in the struggle to end the apartheid system. It is a member of the ruling Tripartite Alliance alongside the African National Congress and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and through this it influences the South African government. The party's Central Committee is the party's highest decision-making structure.
Govan Archibald Mvunyelwa Mbeki was a South African politician,military commander,Communist leader who served as the Secretary of Umkhonto we Sizwe,at its inception in 1961. He was also the son of Chief Sikelewu Mbeki and Johanna Mahala and also the father of the former South African president Thabo Mbeki and political economist Moeletsi Mbeki. He was a leader of the South African Communist Party and the African National Congress. After the Rivonia Trial,he was imprisoned (1963–1987) on charges of terrorism and treason,together with Nelson Mandela,Walter Sisulu,Raymond Mhlaba,Ahmed Kathrada and other eminent ANC leaders,for their role in the ANC's armed wing,Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK). He was sometimes mentioned by his nickname "Oom Gov".
Chris Hani,born Martin Thembisile Hani,was the leader of the South African Communist Party and chief of staff of uMkhonto we Sizwe,the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC). He was a fierce opponent of the apartheid government,and was assassinated by Janusz Waluś,a Polish immigrant and sympathiser of the Conservative opposition on 10 April 1993,during the unrest preceding the transition to democracy.
Yossel Mashel Slovo,commonly known as Joe Slovo,was a South African politician,and an opponent of the apartheid system. A Marxist-Leninist,he was a long-time leader and theorist in the South African Communist Party (SACP),a leading member of the African National Congress (ANC),and a commander of the ANC's military wing uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK). Slovo was a delegate to the multiracial Congress of the People of June 1955 which drew up the Freedom Charter. He was imprisoned for six months in 1960,and emerged as a leader of uMkhonto we Sizwe the following year. He lived in exile from 1963 to 1990,conducting operations against the apartheid régime from the United Kingdom,Angola,Mozambique,and Zambia. In 1990,he returned to South Africa,and took part in the negotiations that ended apartheid. He became known for proposing the "sunset clauses" covering the 5 years following a democratic election,including guarantees and concessions to all sides,and his fierce non-racialist stance. After the elections of 1994,he became Minister for Housing in Nelson Mandela's government. He died of cancer in 1995.
The Black Consciousness Movement (BCM) was a grassroots anti-apartheid activist movement that emerged in South Africa in the mid-1960s out of the political vacuum created by the jailing and banning of the African National Congress and Pan Africanist Congress leadership after the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960. The BCM represented a social movement for political consciousness.
[Black Consciousness'] origins were deeply rooted in Christianity. In 1966,the Anglican Church under the incumbent,Archbishop Robert Selby Taylor,convened a meeting which later on led to the foundation of the University Christian Movement (UCM). This was to become the vehicle for Black Consciousness.
The Natal Indian Congress (NIC) was a political organisation established in 1894 to fight discrimination against Indians in the Natal Colony,and later the Natal Province,of South Africa. The South African Students' Organisation (SASO) was a body of black South African university students who resisted apartheid through non-violent political action. The organisation was formed in 1969 under the leadership of Steve Biko and Barney Pityana and made vital contributions to the ideology and political leadership of the Black Consciousness Movement. It was banned by the South African government in October 1977,as part of the repressive state response to the Soweto uprising.
Geraldine Joslyn Fraser-Moleketi is a South African politician who was the Minister of Public Service and Administration from June 1999 to September 2008. Before that,from July 1996 to June 1999,she was Minister of Welfare and Population Development. Devikarani Priscilla Sewpal Jana was a South African human rights lawyer,politician and diplomat. As a member of the African National Congress (ANC) during the anti-apartheid movement,she participated in both legal activism as well as in the underground movement to end apartheid. She represented many significant figures in the movement,including South African president Nelson Mandela,Winnie Madikizela-Mandela,Steve Biko,Govan Mbeki,Walter Sisulu,and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Jana was one of the very few South Africans who had access to political prisoners,including Mandela,in the maximum security Robben Island prison,and served as an emissary for coded messages between the political prisoners and the ANC leadership.
The 48th National Conference of the African National Congress (ANC) took place from 2 to 7 July 1991 at the University of Durban–Westville in Durban,Natal. It was the first national conference of the ANC since the organisation was banned by the apartheid government in 1960 and marked the ascension of Nelson Mandela to the ANC presidency,which since 1967 had been held by Oliver Tambo.
Mavivi Myakayaka-Manzini,also known as Mavivi Manzini,is a South African politician and diplomat who is currently the South African High Commissioner to Malawi. She was a member of the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress (ANC) between 1994 and 2007 and she was deputy president of the ANC Women's League between 2003 and 2008. At the time of her death,she was Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Agriculture and Rural Development in the provincial government of Limpopo.
