Jared Forrest Golden is an American politician and a Marine Corps veteran serving as the U.S. representative for Maine's 2nd congressional district since 2019. A member of the Democratic Party,his district,the largest east of the Mississippi River by area,covers the northern four-fifths of the state,including Lewiston,Bangor,and Auburn. Golden,along with Angus King and Chellie Pingree,are the first members of Congress to be elected by ranked-choice voting. John Holmes,who had been elected to the House for the former 14th district of Massachusetts was elected as one of the first two senators for Maine. The vacancy was filled in a special election by Joseph Dane (Federalist). Dane was the only Representative officially considered as representing Maine in the 16th Congress. The Representatives from the 15th-20th districts were still classified as being from Massachusetts for the remainder of the 16th Congress.

The elections coincided with other elections to the House of Representatives,elections to the United States Senate and various state and local elections. The elections were conducted with ranked choice voting,as per the result of a referendum passed in 2016. These were the first House of Representatives elections held in Maine following the 2020 redistricting cycle.
