Theresa Lynn Windus is an American chemist who is a distinguished professor at Iowa State University and the Ames Laboratory. Her research involves the development and use of high performance computational chemistry methods to tackle environmental challenges, including the development of new catalysts and renewable energy sources. She was elected a Fellow of the American Chemical Society in 2020.

Early life and education

Windus was an undergraduate student at Minot State University, where she majored in chemistry, mathematics and computer sciences. [1] She moved to Iowa State University for her graduate studies, where she considered chemical bonding in various molecular systems as well as early development of algorithms for the use of high performance computers in chemistry. [2]

Research and career

Windus worked at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, where she led the Molecular Science Software Group. [3] She has developed advanced algorithms for high performance computing in chemistry and materials science. [4]

In 2006, Windus joined the Iowa State University and Ames Laboratory. [1] She currently serves as the Chemistry Department Chair at Iowa State University, [5] the director of the United States Department of Energy Exascale Computing NWChemEx Project, and was involved with the creation of GAMESS. [6] [7] She has been responsible for the creation of computational chemistry software that can run on desktop to petascale and soon exascale computer systems. In 2016, she helped to create the National Science Foundation funded Molecular Sciences Software Institute (MolSSI), which looks to create open source software to support bimolecular simulations, quantum chemistry and materials science. Iowa State University of Science and Technology is a public land-grant research university in Ames, Iowa. NWChem is an ab initio computational chemistry software package which includes quantum chemical and molecular dynamics functionality. It was designed to run on high-performance parallel supercomputers as well as conventional workstation clusters. It aims to be scalable both in its ability to treat large problems efficiently, and in its usage of available parallel computing resources. NWChem has been developed by the Molecular Sciences Software group of the Theory, Modeling & Simulation program of the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). The early implementation was funded by the EMSL Construction Project.

Ames National Laboratory, formerly Ames Laboratory, is a United States Department of Energy national laboratory located in Ames, Iowa, and affiliated with Iowa State University. It is a top-level national laboratory for research on national security, energy, and the environment. The laboratory conducts research into areas of national concern, including the synthesis and study of new materials, energy resources, high-speed computer design, and environmental cleanup and restoration. It is located on the campus of Iowa State University.

Mathematical chemistry is the area of research engaged in novel applications of mathematics to chemistry; it concerns itself principally with the mathematical modeling of chemical phenomena. Mathematical chemistry has also sometimes been called computer chemistry, but should not be confused with computational chemistry.

General Atomic and Molecular Electronic Structure System (GAMESS (US)) is computer software for computational chemistry. The original code started on October 1, 1977 as a National Resources for Computations in Chemistry project. In 1981, the code base split into GAMESS (US) and GAMESS (UK) variants, which now differ significantly. GAMESS (US) is maintained by the members of the Gordon Research Group at Iowa State University. GAMESS (US) source code is available as source-available freeware, but is not open-source software, due to license restrictions.

Robert J. Harrison is a distinguished expert in high-performance computing. He is a professor in the Applied Mathematics and Statistics department and founding Director of the Institute for Advanced Computational Science at Stony Brook University with a $20M endowment. Through a joint appointment with Brookhaven National Laboratory, Professor Harrison has also been named Director of the Computational Science Center and New York Center for Computational Sciences at Brookhaven. Dr. Harrison comes to Stony Brook from the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he was Director of the Joint Institute of Computational Science, Professor of Chemistry and Corporate Fellow. He has a prolific career in high-performance computing with over one hundred publications on the subject, as well as extensive service on national advisory committees.

Yvonne Connolly Martin is an American cheminformatics and computer-aided drug design expert who rose to the rank of Senior Volwiler Research Fellow at Abbott Laboratories. Trained in chemistry at Northwestern University, she became a leader in collaborative science aimed at discovering and developing bioactive molecules as therapeutic agents, with her contributions proceeding from application of methods to understand how descriptors of molecular shapes and physicochemical properties relate to their biological activity. She is the author of a seminal volume in cheminformatics, Quantitative Drug Design, and has been the recipient of numerous awards in her field, including being named as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1985) and of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (2000), and receiving the Herman Skolnik Award (2009) and the Award for Computers in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Research (2017) from the American Chemical Society.

Hans Bernhard "Berny" Schlegel is German-born computational and theoretical chemist, and distinguished professor at Wayne State University. He is a highly cited chemist, with a Thomson Reuters H-Index of 116 and citations of over 218,000 as of 2020. He is a professor of chemistry at the Wayne State University and co-author of the computational chemistry software, Gaussian. The "Berny optimization" as implemented in Gaussian is named after him. His group also created the Electronic Structure Perl Toolkit (ESPT).
