Thiranagama is located by the Indian Ocean, 16 km (9.9 mi) north of Galle and 99 km (62 mi) south of Colombo.
To the north, Thiranagama is bordered by Narigama, a trendy neighborhood on the southern boundary of Hikkaduwa town. The part named Thiranagama East is administratively in the Katukoliha electoral ward [5] .
To the south, Thiranagama extends to Patuwatha, a beachfront area stretching towards Dodanduwa.
Thiranagama, the upmarket area of the 24 km (15 mi) coastline of Hikkaduwa Divisional Secretariat, has emerged, in 2016 [6] , as a high-end tourism destination, notably home to the region's first five-star design hotel. [7] [8]
Thiranagama is bordered by one of the most expansive beaches in the South West of Sri Lanka.
Extending over 3 km (1.9 mi), this wide beach is calm and a few quality restaurants. [9] There also are several surf spots there.
In the 19th century, during the British Ceylon period, Hikkaduwa region was "the great resort of picnic parties from Galle" [10] (Galle was the largest city in southern Ceylon).

It is located 97.8 km (60.8 mi) [11] from Colombo station. Nine trains stop there daily. [12]
