Thottappan (transl: Godfather) is a 2019 Malayalam drama film directed by Shanavas K Bavakutty. [1] [2] [3] It depicts the affection between a girl and her godparent. [4]

Plot

When his partner in crime goes missing, a small-time crook dedicates himself to raising the daughter his friend left behind. Two small time thieves jonappan and ithaq shares a special bond and lives by doing crooks as demanded by some people. On a certain endeavour in which ithaque was not present, Jonappan goes missing. After the incident Jonappan's wife remains speechless and behaves insensitively to their daughter Sarah which leads ithaq to take care of her as a father, whom she affectionately calls as 'thottapan'(godfather).The subsequent events in the island after the entrance of a strange youngster leads to a touching climax.

The Times of India gave the film a rating of three-and-a-half out of five stars and stated that "The well etched out characters and the bittersweet ending does make for a compelling storytelling and an endearing visual experience. And that makes Thottappan a definite treat for a movie enthusiast". [11] The Hindu wrote that "Thottappan builds up slowly, drawing you in with the promise of a knockout punch which never comes. Maybe that's how they intended it to be". [12]

He made his debut with Salt N' Pepper (2011), co-written with Dileesh Nair. He has written screenplays for popular films such as 22 Female Kottayam (2012), Da Thadiya (2012), Idukki Gold (2013), Iyobinte Pusthakam (2014), Rani Padmini (2015), Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016), Mayaanadhi (2017), and Kumbalangi Nights (2019) and Joji (2021). He also served as co-director and wrote the dialogues for Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum (2017). Pushkaran won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay for Maheshinte Prathikaram at the 64th National Film Awards (2016).

Ee.Ma.Yau. is a 2018 Indian Malayalam-language independent tragedy film directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery and written by P. F. Mathews. It stars Vinayakan, Chemban Vinod Jose, Pauly Valsan, Bitto Davis, Kainakary Thankaraj, Dileesh Pothan and Arya Salim in the main roles. The film had its premiere on 30 November 2017 and was theatrically released on 4 May 2018. The film revolves around the death and funeral of an older man from the Latin Catholic community in Chellanam, Ernakulam district. Lijo Jose Pellissery won the Best Director Award at the 48th Kerala State Film Awards for Ee.Ma.Yau. The film won the Silver Peacock-Best Director and Best Actor awards at the 49th International Film Festival of India.
