Thoughts of a Colored Man is a play written by Keenan Scott II that opened on Broadway on October 13, 2021. It is Scott's Broadway debut, [1] and the play is the first Broadway show that was written and directed by Black men (Steve Broadnax III) [2] with a Black man in the lead role. It was slated to be one of seven plays by Black playwrights during the Fall 2021 season. [3] The show uses slam poetry, prose and songs to tell the story of Black life in America through the stories of seven multi generational men living in the same Brooklyn neighborhood. [4] [5] [6]
The show ran at the Golden Theatre until December 22, 2021, when it was forced to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic, even though the playwright stepped in to cover one performance. [7] [8] [9] It was originally slated to end March 2022. [10]
Scott began working on what is now Thoughts of a Colored Man fifteen years earlier when he was a Frostburg State University student. [11] Prior to its Broadway engagement, the show had an out-of-town tryout at Syracuse Stage and Baltimore Center Stage. [1] A December performance of the show was recorded for preservation in the New York Public Library Theatre on Film and Tape Archive. [10]

To Kill a Mockingbird is a 2018 play based on the 1960 novel of the same name by Harper Lee, adapted for the stage by Aaron Sorkin. It opened on Broadway at the Shubert Theatre on December 13, 2018. The play opened in London's West End at the Gielgud Theatre in March 2022. The show follows the story of Atticus Finch, a lawyer in 1930s Alabama, as he defends Tom Robinson, a black man falsely accused of rape. Varying from the book, the play has Atticus as the protagonist, not his daughter Scout, allowing his character to change throughout the show. During development the show was involved in two legal disputes, the first with the Lee estate over the faithfulness of the play to the original book, and the second was due to exclusivity to the rights with productions using the script by Christopher Sergel. During opening week, the production garnered more than $1.5 million in box office sales and reviews by publications such as the New York Times, LA Times and AMNY were positive but not without criticism.

The latter received 12 nominations at the 74th Tony Awards, breaking the record previously set by the 2018 revival of Angels in America for most nominations for a non-musical play. A profile in the New York Times said that Harris's "ability to render subconscious trauma into provocative theatrical expression, as potentially unsettling as entertaining, has earned him a lot of attention in a very short time."
