The 2006 Thunder Bay municipal election was held on 13 November 2006 in Thunder Bay, Ontario to elect a mayor, 12 city councillors, trustees for the Lakehead District School Board, the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board, the Conseil scolaire de district du Grand Nord de l'Ontario, and the Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boréales. This election coincided with the 2006 Ontario municipal elections being held across Ontario.

Thunder Bay City in Ontario, Canada

Thunder Bay is a city in, and the seat of, Thunder Bay District, Ontario, Canada. It is the most populous municipality in Northwestern Ontario with a population of 107,909 as of the Canada 2016 Census, and the second most populous in Northern Ontario after Greater Sudbury. Located on Lake Superior, the census metropolitan area of Thunder Bay has a population of 121,621, and consists of the city of Thunder Bay, the municipalities of Oliver Paipoonge and Neebing, the townships of Shuniah, Conmee, O'Connor, and Gillies, and the Fort William First Nation.

It is Canada's most populous province accounting for 38.3 percent of the country's population, and is the second-largest province in total area. Ontario is fourth-largest in total area when the territories of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut are included. In many countries, a mayor is the highest-ranking official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town.

Thunder Bay City Council

Voters are asked to elect a mayor, five at-large city councillors and seven ward councillors. Of 86,914 registered voters, 33,196 votes were cast and 33,192 votes were counted. Voter turnout was the lowest in the city's history at 38.2%. [1]

At-large is a designation for members of a governing body who are elected or appointed to represent the whole membership of the body, rather than a subset of that membership. At-large voting is in contrast to voting by electoral districts.

Mayor

Three candidates ran for the office of Mayor. The incumbent, Lynn Peterson, was re-elected by a considerable margin.

A landslide victory is an electoral victory in a political system, when one candidate or party receives an overwhelming supermajority of the votes or seats in the elected body, thus utterly eliminating the opponents. The winning party has reached more voters than usual, and a landslide victory is often seen in hindsight as a turning point in people's views on political matters.

The city of Thunder Bay is divided into seven electoral wards: Current River, McIntyre, McKellar, Neebing, Northwood, Red River, and Westfort. [2] Residents of each ward elect one member to represent their ward on city council. Twenty people ran for these positions in five wards. The incumbent councillors in Northwood and Neebing wards were acclaimed.

McKellar

On 18 October 2007 Andy Savela announced his resignation to take on further responsibilities with the Canadian Auto Workers. [3] City council voted 6–5 on 5 November 2007 to appoint Robert Tuchenhagen, to the position. Tuchenhagen was defeated by Savela by 377 votes. He was sworn in on 19 November 2007. [4]

Canadian Auto Workers Canadian labour union

The Canadian Auto Workers was one of Canada's largest and highest profile labour unions. In 2013 it merged with the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada, forming a new union, Unifor. While rooted in Ontario's large auto plants of Windsor, Brampton, Oakville, St. Catharines and Oshawa, the CAW has expanded and now incorporates workers in almost every sector of the economy. The presidents of the CAW were Bob White (1985-1992), Buzz Hargrove (1992-2008) and Ken Lewenza (2008-2013).

The Lakehead District School Board is an English language public school board and elects 8 trustees at-large in the Thunder Bay Census Metropolitan Area, the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board is an English language separate school board and elects 6 trustees at-large in the Thunder Bay Census Metropolitan Area, the Conseil scolaire de district du Grand Nord de l'Ontario is a French language public school board and elects one trustee from Northwestern Ontario, and the Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boréales is a French language separate school board and elects 4 trustees at-large in Northwestern Ontario.

Lakehead District School Board

The school opened in 2004 on the site of the former Prospect Avenue Public School. The construction of the French language high school faced opposition from Thunder Bay's Anglophone majority. The school is named after Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, sieur de La Vérendrye, a French explorer. La Vérendrye has a high graduation rate, and its enrolment has increased annually since it opened, and the building will be expanded in the near future. There is a total of 37 employees at La Vérendrye as of January 2009.

The election was be held on the same day as elections in every other municipality in Ontario.
