In the 2006 municipal elections in Ontario, voters in the province of Ontario, elected mayors, councillors, school board trustees and all other elected officials in all of Ontario's municipalities. These elections were regulated by the Municipal Elections Act of Ontario.

Ontario Province of Canada

Ontario is one of the 13 provinces and territories of Canada and is located in east-central Canada. It is Canada's most populous province accounting for 38.3 percent of the country's population, and is the second-largest province in total area. Ontario is fourth-largest jurisdiction in total area when the territories of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut are included. It is home to the nation's capital city, Ottawa, and the nation's most populous city, Toronto, which is also Ontario's provincial capital.

Date

Municipal elections in all Ontario municipalities took place on Monday, November 13, 2006 (notwithstanding advance polling arrangements). Currently municipal elections in Ontario have fixed election dates, and the next round of elections are due to take place in November, 2010. Prior to the vote in 2006, the period between elections had been 3 years.

Voting Notice and Attention

Candidates may have withdrawn from the race prior to November 13, 2006, and while their names may still have appeared on the ballot, voting for a withdrawn candidate resulted in a spoiled ballot and was not counted.

Term lengths

The Legislative Assembly of Ontario legislation (Bill 81, Schedule H), passed in 2006, sets the length of terms in office for all municipal elected officials at four years.

Campaigns in major cities

In Toronto, their municipal election had incumbent mayor David Miller easily defeating councillor Jane Pitfield and former Liberal Party president Stephen LeDrew.

Current to 2016, the Toronto census metropolitan area (CMA), of which the majority is within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), held a population of 5,928,040, making it Canada's most populous CMA. Toronto is the anchor of an urban agglomeration, known as the Golden Horseshoe in Southern Ontario, located on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. A global city, Toronto is a centre of business, finance, arts, and culture, and is recognized as one of the most multicultural and cosmopolitan cities in the world.

David Raymond Miller is the North American director for the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, a former Mayor of Toronto and former president and CEO of WWF-Canada, the Canadian division of the international World Wildlife Fund.

Ottawa's election race was a heated affair with incumbent mayor Bob Chiarelli finishing third behind victorious businessman Larry O'Brien and popular former councillor Alex Munter.

Ottawa is the capital city of Canada. It stands on the south bank of the Ottawa River in the eastern portion of southern Ontario. Ottawa borders Gatineau, Quebec; the two form the core of the Ottawa–Gatineau census metropolitan area (CMA) and the National Capital Region (NCR). As of 2016, Ottawa had a city population of 934,243 and a metropolitan population of 1,323,783 making it the fourth-largest city and the fifth-largest CMA in Canada.

Bob Chiarelli Canadian politician

Robert Chiarelli is a former politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Liberal member in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario who served from 1987 to 1997 and again from 2010 to 2018 who represented the ridings of Ottawa West and Ottawa West—Nepean. He was the Regional Chair of Ottawa-Carleton from 1997 to 2001 and was mayor of Ottawa from 2001 to 2006. He served in the provincial cabinets of Dalton McGuinty and Kathleen Wynne.

In London, incumbent mayor Anne Marie DeCicco-Best defeated Liberal MP Joe Fontana. In Mississauga, Hazel McCallion, who has been mayor since 1978 faced little competition en route to victory.

London is a city in southwestern Ontario, Canada along the Quebec City–Windsor Corridor. The city had a population of 383,822 according to the 2016 Canadian census. London is at the confluence of the Thames River, approximately 200 km (120 mi) from both Toronto and Detroit; and about 230 km (140 mi) from Buffalo, New York. The city of London is a separated municipality, politically separate from Middlesex County, though it remains the county seat.

Joe Fontana Canadian politician

Joseph Frank "Joe" Fontana, is an Italian-born Canadian politician. He was a Liberal member of the House of Commons of Canada from 1987 to 2006, and mayor of London, Ontario from 2010 until his 2014 convictions for fraud and forgery.

Larry Di Ianni, Hamilton's mayor was upset in an extremely close race by former alderman Fred Eisenberger.

Prior to his tenure as mayor, he served as a town councillor in Stoney Creek and a city councillor in the amalgamated City of Hamilton. Most recently, Di Ianni ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Hamilton in 2010.

Hamilton is a port city in the Canadian province of Ontario. An industrialized city in the Golden Horseshoe at the west end of Lake Ontario, Hamilton has a population of 536,917, and a metropolitan population of 747,545. The city is located about 60 km southwest of Toronto, with which the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is formed.

Fred Eisenberger Canadian mayor

Fredrick Eisenberger is a Canadian politician. He has been the mayor of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, since December 1, 2014. He is currently in his second term, having previously served from 2006 to 2010. He also served as chair of the Hamilton Port Authority prior to his election in 2006. Fred Eisenberger was succeeded by Bob Bratina in 2010, but was elected mayor again in 2014 and 2018 to four-year terms.

In Greater Sudbury, mayor David Courtemanche was defeated by former NDP MP John Rodriguez.

In Guelph, former mayor Karen Farbridge defeated incumbent mayor Kate Quarrie in a reversal of the election three years prior when Quarrie defeated Farbridge.
