thyssenkrupp Materials Services GmbH (tkMX) is the lead company of the business area of the same name and part of the diversified German industrial group thyssenkrupp AG. Materials Services is a global materials distributor [1] as well as a technical and infrastructural service provider for the B2B-sector. [2] The total revenue in the fiscal year 2015/2016 was 11.88 billion Euro. [3]

Company structure

thyssenkrupp Materials Services is divided in three so-called business units - Materials Distribution, Supply Chain Services and Special Materials. Over 19,700 employees [4] work for the 81 Materials Services subsidiaries at around 480 branches in more than 40 countries. [1]

Main customers are located in Europe and North America. [5] They are specialist retailers and companies of the automotive sector or the metal processing industry. [5]

Digital transformation

Materials Services runs a Digital Transformation Office (DTO). The DTO forwards the business area’s digitalization goals. The strategy includes a progressive addition of e-commerce models as well as a cultural change to an integral and collaborative work environment. [6]

The online shop "materials4me" was launched in Great Britain, Germany, Spain and Switzerland in 2016. [6] The target group of materials4me are do-it-yourselfers, educational institutions as well as small and medium businesses. There are also two B2B-portals. "Materials Services Online-Portal" grants access to order documents, among others, for key accounts. [7] On the website "onlinelaserworks" customers can upload CAD drawings to have blanks fully automatically cut to size. [7]

At the Hannover trade fair thyssenkrupp announced the opening of a production center for Additive Manufacturing (3D-printing) in the city Mülheim in 2017. [8]

In 2017, Materials Services also announced the self-developed platform "toii" in line with the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). This system is compatible with old and new machines from different manufactures. The tool should accelerate the automation of the production operations as well as make processes much more efficient. Type 214 submarine Submarine class

The Type 214 is a class of diesel–electric submarines developed exclusively for export by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH (HDW). It features diesel propulsion with an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system using Siemens polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) hydrogen fuel cells. The class combines the design principles of the Type 209 submarine family and the features of the Type 212A submarine. However, as an export design, it lacks some of the classified technologies of the Type 212 such as the non-magnetic steel hull that makes it difficult to detect using a magnetic anomaly detector.

The Shishumar-class submarines are diesel-electric attack submarines, currently in active service with the Indian Navy. These submarines are an Indian variant of the Type 209 submarines developed by the German yard Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft under the internal designation "Type 1500". The first two vessels were built by HDW at Kiel, Germany, while the remainder were built by Mazagon Dock Limited, at Mumbai, India, under a technology transfer agreement. The submarines were commissioned between 1986 and 1994. These submarines have a displacement of 1,660 tons when surfaced, a speed of 22 knots, and a complement of 40 including eight officers.
