The Tikka M65 (originally Tikka LSA65) is a Finnish rifle designed by a Finnish firearms company Tikkakoski in 1969. It was designed as a long action rifle on the basis of the short action Tikka M55 rifle, [1] however its action differs much from the M55. [4] Like the Tikka M55, the M65 was imported to the United States by Ithaca Gun Company. [1]

History

Tikkakoski company had designed the Tikka M55 in 1967–1968 and it had been brought to production in 1968 (initially called Tikka M76 but already in 1969 LSA55). [1] However, it could only use cartridges with cases up to 55 mm, and Tikkakoski decided to develop a long action rifle in 1969, the M65, which initially was called LSA65, for cases up to 65 mm long (after which the rifle was named). [1] In 1972 the rifle was renamed to M65. [1]

Tikkakoski company was bought by Nokia in 1974 and by Sako in 1983. [2] Sako also bought Valmet in 1986. [5] :142–144 After the success of the Tikka M55 as a sniper rifle, in 1988 Sako brought a purpose-built sniper rifle Tikka M65A to the market, with significant modifications to the basic design. [3] The M65A took some design features from the Valmet Sniper M86, such as the aluminium bedding block. [5] :142–144

In 1987 the Tikkakoski factory was run down, all its machinery was destroyed, and production of Tikka rifles was transferred to Sako factory at Riihimäki. [5] :158–159 The last Tikka M55 and M65 were assembled in 1989. [1] In 1990 the Tikka M65 was superseded by the Tikka M658 rifle of the Tikka M88 series. [1]

The design work from the Tikka M65A and Valmet Sniper M86 were used to develop the Sako TRG sniper rifle in the early 1990s. [5] :142–144

Design

The Tikka M65 action is based on the Tikka M55, which in turn is loosely based on the Mauser action, which Tikkakoski had wanted to modernise. [1] The repeating magazine fed rifle features a milled receiver made from special steel, to which a 90° rotating, two-lug cylindrical bolt locks; [1] [4] the M65 also incorporates two additional safety lugs at the rear of the bolt, [4] as well as two vent holes in the bolt body to vent off gases to the side if a primer breaks. [4] Unlike the M55, the M65 also features an integral recoil lug, which is made to the receiver in the milling process. [4] The receiver has 17 mm dovetail rails milled on its top side for attaching optical sights as in the M55. [1] [4] The later model bolts have a large handle with a plastic ball-shaped end. [1] [3] The M65A also has a polyacrylamide bushing as a bolt guide. [3]

The barrel is cut rifled with 6 grooves and depending on the model, either 520 mm (20.47 in), 560 mm (22.83 in), 620 mm (24.41 in) or 660 mm (25.98 in) long. [1] Just as in the M55, some models feature iron sights attached to the barrel; rear sight is an open notch and front sight is a hooded post. [1] The barrel is free-floating, [3] also in the Fullstock variant. [1]

The trigger mechanism has an adjustable trigger pull between 0.8–1 kg and 3 kg. [1] [3] The trigger pull can be adjusted by rotating a screw inside the magazine well. [1] The trigger has a tendency to produce unintentional discharges if the trigger pull is set too light. [1]

In the standard versions, the magazine is either a 4, 5, 7, 8 or 10-round double stack stamped steel magazine, and the magazine catch is located in front of the trigger, within the trigger guard. [1] In M65A, the magazine is either a 5 or 10-round single stack single feed stamped steel magazine, and the magazine catches are attached to both sides of the magazine itself, [3] as in the Valmet Sniper M86. [6]

The sporter variants feature heavy walnut stocks which are convex towards the cheek and concave on the away side, and have UIT rails on their underside and left side, for attaching different accessories. [1] The M65A has an aluminium bedded stock with an aluminium chassis inside the walnut stock [3] like the Valmet Sniper M86. [5] :142–144 The butt of the M65A rifle is attached to the chassis with an aluminium tube, and it has a fully adjustable walnut cheekpiece; the front end of the stock is made with two walnut stocksides, which attach to the aluminium chassis. At the underside of the M65A there is an UIT accessory rail for bipods and such accessories. [3]

SAKO

SAKO, Limited is a Finnish firearm and ammunition manufacturer located in Riihimäki, Tavastia Proper in southern Finland. It also has owned the Tikka brand of bolt-action rifles since 1983, and is now owned by the Italian firearm holding company Beretta Holding.

The RK 95 TP, officially 7.62 RK 95 TP and commercially known as the M95, is a 7.62×39mm Finnish assault rifle adopted in relatively small numbers by the Finnish Defence Forces in the 1990s. The RK 95 TP originally featured many improvements including a fire control selector and a muzzle device that enabled the firing of rifle grenades, the attachment of a suppressor, or bayonet.

The Sako TRG is a bolt-action sniper rifle line designed and manufactured by the Finnish firearms manufacturer, SAKO of Riihimäki. The TRG-21 and TRG-22 are designed to fire standard .308 Winchester sized cartridges, while the TRG-41 and TRG-42 are designed to fire more powerful and dimensionally larger .300 Winchester Magnum (7.62×67mm) and .338 Lapua Magnum (8.6×70mm) cartridges. KK 62 Type of Light machine gun

The KK 62, officially 7.62 KK 62 and colloquially KVKK or KVKK 62, is a Finnish 7.62×39mm light machine gun designed in late 1950s with the first prototype ready for testing in 1960. It was officially adopted as the standard infantry support weapon of the Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) in 1962 as the 7.62 konekivääri 62; the first weapons were delivered in 1966. It remains in service, although a replacement has already entered use, namely the PKM general-purpose machine gun.

The CZ-550 is a bolt-action hunting rifle series manufactured by Česká zbrojovka Uherský Brod. The CZ 550 series is available with a medium or magnum sized action. The CZ 550 rifle resembles the Mauser 98 rifle series, though it is not an exact copy.

The Howa 1500 or Howa M1500 is a bolt-action rifle produced in Japan by Howa Machinery. Introduced in 1979, it has been used by hunters as a hunting rifle with various cartridge offerings. It is also utilized by military and law enforcement elements as a sniper rifle. It is sold under the name of Howa Model 1500 Rifle for overseas markets.

Tikkakoski (company)

Oy Tikkakoski Ab was a Finnish company producing firearms and different consumer durables, most notably sewing machines. It was named after the Tikkakoski district in Jyväskylä, Central Finland where their factory was located. Their most known products were sold under the Tikka brand, which was purchased by SAKO in 1983.

Tikka T3 Type of Rifle

The Tikka T3 is a series of bolt-action rifles manufactured by Sako under their Tikka brand in Riihimäki, Finland since 2003. The series is available in a wide variety of different sight, calibre and stock configurations as well as several barrel lengths. The rifle series was developed by Sako product development team led by Kari Kuparinen.

Lynx Rifles is a brand of high-end straight pull rifles manufactured by Finnish firearms manufacturerer Pirkan ASE both for the hunting, sport and tactical market. All rifles are handmade in Finland and feature a biathlon style cross bolt straight pull system consisting of relatively few parts.

SIG Sauer 205 is a bolt action rifle formerly produced by SIG Sauer. The rifle was produced in several variants for competition shooting and law enforcement.

FFV 890 Type of Assault rifle

The FFV 890 was a Swedish assault rifle manufactured and designed by Försvarets Fabriksverk. The FFV 890 was based on the Israeli IMI Galil through a manufacturing licence, which in turn was based on the Finnish Valmet RK 62 and ultimately the Soviet AK-47. The FFV 890 was designed between 1975 and 1980, and its final iteration, FFV 890C, competed in the Swedish Armed Forces trials for the new 5.56×45mm NATO assault rifle, where it ended up as a runner-up to the FN FNC, which was then chosen as the Ak 5. The FFV 890C was never widely adopted by any service, though some rifles were used by the Swedish police.

Valmet Sniper M86 Finnish sniper rifle

The Valmet Sniper M86 is a Finnish sniper rifle designed by the former Finnish state firearms company Valmet. The rifle was Valmet's first and only proper sniper rifle, and after the merger with Sako in 1986, its development work was the basis for the Sako TRG sniper rifles. The rifle was produced only in small numbers in 1987 due to the merger.

The Tikka M55 is a Finnish rifle designed by a Finnish firearms company Tikkakoski in 1967–1968. M55 was the first centerfire rifle action designed by Tikkakoski, and it was manufactured from 1968 to 1989. Tikkakoski also developed a long action rifle based on the M55, called Tikka M65. The Tikka M55 was imported to the United States by Ithaca Gun Company.

RK 71 Finnish assault rifle

The RK 71, commercially M71, is a Finnish assault rifle designed and manufactured by Valmet. It is based on the RK 62, which in turn is based on the Soviet AK-47. Finnish Defence Forces tested the 7.62 RK 71 between 1971 and 1973 as a possible replacement of the RK 62, but logistics issues prevented its larger adoption by FDF. The rifle was also exported to Qatar.

The Sako S20 is a bolt-action rifle designed and manufactured by a Finnish firearms company Sako since 2020. The rifle features an aluminium chassis, which allows for modularity and different configurations, due to which Sako calls it a hybrid rifle.

Sako 85 is a bolt action rifle produced by the Finnish manufacturer Sako since 2006, and the name signifies that Sako celebrated 85 years that year. The model 85 is marketed as one of Sako's premium models for hunting, and is delivered in many different configurations and chamberings. According to Sako the rifle is available in over 1000 different configurations. Some examples are the Finnlight and Carbonlight models.
