Tilly Lockey (born 7 October 2005) is a British social media personality and amputee known for her bionic arms developed by Open Bionics, which she has used since 2016. In 2021, she competed and went on to win the sixth series of the CBBC competition series Got What It Takes? .
Lockey contracted meningococcal septicaemia as a baby in 2007, at the age of 15 months. [1] Despite her parents being told that she was likely to die, Lockey survived following a successful operation to have both arms and her toes amputated. [2]
Lockey was initially provided with simple prosthetics from the NHS. While researching 3D printing, Lockey's mother discovered Open Bionics, who were looking for a below-the-elbow amputee to trial new prosthetic arms. [3] Since being chosen in 2016, Lockey has used bionic arms developed by the company, [4] which enable her to perform actions such as picking up small objects and playing video games. [5] [6] These arms are the first of their kind to be medically approved in Britain. [7]
In 2014, Lockey's custom-made bicycle was stolen; it was recovered four days later and two people were charged. [8] [1]
One set of arms used by Lockey was based on the Deus Ex video game series. [9] In 2019, she received new custom arms designed by the team creating Alita: Battle Angel . [10]
Lockey has created and shared make-up tutorials online, [4] and presented on the children's news show FYI on Sky. [11] She featured in the video for Kate Nash's song Bad Lieutenant in 2019. [12]
In 2021, Lockey competed in the sixth series of the CBBC competition series Got What It Takes? . On 6 July 2021, she was announced as the winner of the series. [13]
In 2023 she hosted her own show at Sunderland Uni radio, [14] and in 2024 was hosting the "Tuesday Hometime" drive time show on Spark Sunderland Radio. [15]
Battle Angel Alita, known in Japan as Gunnm, is a Japanese cyberpunk manga series created by Yukito Kishiro and originally published in Shueisha's Business Jump magazine from 1990 to 1995. The second of the comic's nine volumes was adapted in 1993 into a two-part anime original video animation titled Battle Angel for North American release by ADV Films and the UK and Australian release by Manga Entertainment. Manga Entertainment also dubbed Battle Angel Alita into English. A live-action film adaptation titled Alita: Battle Angel was released on February 14, 2019.

Claudia Mitchell is a former United States Marine whose left arm was amputated near the shoulder following a motorcycle crash in 2004. She became the first woman to be outfitted with a bionic arm. The arm is controlled through muscles in her chest and side, which in turn are controlled by the nerves that had previously controlled her real arm. The nerves were rerouted to these muscles in a process of targeted reinnervation.
Laeta Kalogridis is an American screenwriter and television and film producer of Greek descent. She has written scripts for Alexander (2004), Night Watch (2004), Pathfinder (2007) and Shutter Island (2010). She also served as an executive producer for the television series Birds of Prey and Bionic Woman, and she co-wrote the screenplay for Terminator Genisys (2015) and Alita: Battle Angel (2019). She is the creator and executive producer of the Netflix series Altered Carbon (2018).

Viktorija Moskaļova, better known as Viktoria Modesta, is a Latvian-born British singer-songwriter, performance artist, creative director, and model. Modesta's leg was injured during her birth. She had it voluntarily amputated in 2007. She was signed to IMG Models as a model, and as a musician she is also known as a "Bionic Pop Artist". Her music video "Prototype" received a Silver Lion Award at the Cannes Film Festival. She also performed at the 2012 Summer Paralympics closing ceremony and was a guest star at the Crazy Horse in Paris in 2019.
Oscar is an all-black cat owned by Kate Allan and Mike Nolan who lives on the Channel Island of Jersey. In 2009 Oscar had both hind paws severed by a combine harvester. Since then he has undergone a pioneering operation to add prosthetic feet. The treatment has since been considered for use with humans. A book about Oscar's story, Oscar the Bionic Cat was published in 2013.
Amy Palmiero-Winters is a below-knee amputee, long-distance runner, and triathlete. She holds eleven world records in various events. In 2010, she was awarded the James E. Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the United States and the ESPN ESPY Award as the top female athlete with a disability in the world.
Bebionic is a commercial prosthetic hand designed to enable amputees to perform everyday activities, such as eating, drinking, writing, typing, turning a key in a lock and picking up small objects. The first version of the Bebionic hand was launched at the World Congress and Orthopädie & Reha-Technik, Trade Show, Leipzig, Germany, in May 2010. Designed in the United Kingdom, the Bebionic hand is manufactured by RSL Steeper and is available worldwide. Since February 2, 2017, Bebionic is owned by Ottobock.
David James Gow CBE is the inventor of the i-Limb prosthetic hand. He was made an honorary Doctor of Science in November 2018 by the University of Edinburgh.

Alita: Battle Angel is a 2019 American cyberpunk action film based on Yukito Kishiro's manga series Battle Angel Alita. It was directed by Robert Rodriguez, produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau, and written by Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis. Using performance-capture CGI animation, Rosa Salazar stars as Alita, a cyborg who awakens in a new body without memory of her past and sets out to uncover her destiny. Many of the supporting roles, played by Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley and Keean Johnson, used live actors.
Open Bionics is a UK-based company that develops low-cost, 3D printed bionic arms for amputees with below elbow amputations. Their bionic arms are fully functional with lights, bio feedback vibrations, and different functions that allow the user to grab, pinch, high-five, fist bump, and thumbs-up. The company is based inside Future Space, co-located with Bristol Robotics Laboratory. The company was founded in 2014 by Joel Gibbard MBE and Samantha Payne MBE.
Limbitless Solutions is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in the United States that uses additive manufacturing to create accessible, yet affordable personalized bionics and prosthetic partial arms for children with limb deltas The organization says their bionic arms are manufactured for under $400, 1% of the standard production cost. Headquartered on the University of Central Florida campus in Orlando, Florida, the organization was founded by a team of engineering students, led by CEO and Executive Director Albert Manero.
Grace Mandeville is a British actress, vlogger, model, television presenter, and internet personality best known for portraying Holly on CBBC's The Sparticle Mystery and for her and her sister's YouTube channel, "Mandeville Sisters." She also has a younger brother called Henry.
Samantha Joanne Payne MBE is an English entrepreneur. The co-founder of Open Bionics, a bionics company developing affordable prosthetics for children, Payne has won a number of international awards for her work. These include the MIT Technology Review 'Innovators under 35' in 2018, James Dyson gong for innovative engineering and Wired Innovation Fellow in 2016. In the Queen's Birthday Honours list 2020, Payne was awarded an MBE, for her work making bionic technology more accessible.
Mandy Horvath is a Colorado based American bi-lateral above knee amputee, creative writer, public speaker, actress and mountaineer. She is notable as the first female bi-lateral amputee to summit the Manitou Incline, Pikes Peak (twice), the Statue of Liberty stairwell to the crown, and Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro, without the use of prosthetic equipment- using her arms and hands to crawl. Her successful ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro also awards her title of the first legless woman to summit one of the world's Eight Summits without the aid of prosthetic equipment.
Aadeel Akhtar is a neuroscientist and electrical engineer. He is CEO and founder of the bionics company PSYONIC. In 2021, he was named one of MIT Technology Review’s 35 Innovators Under 35 and was featured in Newsweek’s “America's 50 Greatest Disruptors: Visionaries Who Are Changing the World.”
