East Timor participated at the 2021 Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam from 12 to 23 May 2022. The Timorese contingent consisted of 69 athletes. Despite the small number, this contingent won 3 silver and 2 bronze medals. [2] Felisberto de Deus won East Timor's first ever medal in athletics. [3]

The culture of Timor-Leste reflects numerous cultural influences, including Portuguese, Roman Catholic, and Malay, on the indigenous Austronesian cultures in Timor-Leste.

The Southeast Asian Games, commonly known as SEA Games is a biennial multi-sport event involving participants from the current 11 countries of Southeast Asia. The games are under the regulation of the Southeast Asian Games Federation with supervision by the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Council of Asia.

The East Timor national Under-23 football team represents the East Timor in international football competitions in the Olympic Games, Asian Games, Southeast Asian Games and any other under-23 international football tournaments. It is controlled by the Federação de Futebol de Timor-Leste, the governing body of football in the country. East Timor is currently one of the weakest teams in the world. They won their first match on 5 November 2011 against Brunei, scoring 2–1.

East Timor participated at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines that was held from 30 November to 11 December 2019. The country sent the smallest delegation to the games with 48 athletes competing in 10 sports. The host country through the Philippine Sports Commission provided the accommodation and training facilities to the East Timorese delegation who were expected to arrive seven to ten days in the Philippines prior to the games. The total delegation including athletes is 221 people.

The group stage and semi-finals were played in Việt Trì and Nam Định, while Hanoi hosted the bronze and gold medal matches. Men's teams are restricted to under-23 players with a maximum of three over-aged players allowed.

East Timor started competing in the Southeast Asian Games in 2003 of the games in Hanoi, Vietnam .In that year, they became the youngest nation to compete, having gained independence in the year 2002; although not being an ASEAN member and despite its geographical location closer to the Pacific archipelago than the Asian continent, making its debut at the games. East Timor never hosted the Southeast Asian Games and best finished that the country attained is in 2011 Southeast Asian Games when the country won the first gold medal by Julianto Pereira and Dorceyana Borgesenth. In 2013 Southeast Asian Games they won 2 gold medals, 3 silver medals and 5 bronze medals marking their current best performance in the games.
