Tjapko Poppens (born 31 July 1970) is a Dutch politician serving as Mayor of Amstelveen since 2019. A member of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), he previously served as Mayor of Wijk bij Duurstede from 2012 until 2019. [1]

Career

Poppens grew up in the province of Groningen and graduated in Economics of Agriculture and Environment at Wageningen University with a major in business and administration. In 2005 he became a councilor in Deventer and from 2007 he was VVD leader. Additionally Poppens was a corporate staff director in the municipality of Enschede. Tjapko Poppens is married and is the father of three children. [2]

The Third Rutte cabinet has been the cabinet of the Netherlands since 26 October 2017. It was formed by a coalition government of the political parties People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), Democrats 66 (D66) and Christian Union (CU) after the Dutch general election of 2017.

The Dutch municipal elections of 2018 were held on 21 March in 335 municipalities in the Netherlands. This election determined the composition of the municipal councils for the following four years. The election coincided with the Intelligence and Security Services Act referendum.
