Tobit is a draughts game that resembles Turkish and Armenian draughts in that pieces move orthogonally (forward, sideways i.e. left and right). It especially resembles Turkish draughts in that pieces only move orthogonally.

History

The game is played in the Republic of Khakassia of Russia, and is associated with the Khakas people. The history and etymology of the game is unclear. There are several variants as in different size boards and number of pieces, but the one described here has become the standard. In the past, the grid board was drawn on the ground with animal bones (such as sheep bones) used as playing pieces. The first competitions with the standard variant only began in 2002, and has grown significantly since then. [1] Due to the game only having 38 spaces, the game is more tactical and less strategic compared to Turkish draughts. [2]

Rules

Tobit has a few distinguishing features. The game is played on a grid board and pieces are placed on the intersections and endpoints, whereas the other two games are played on a 8x8 square board and pieces are placed within the squares. The grid board is not a square or a rectangle. The grid board can be created by having four horizontal line segments intersect perpendicularly five vertical line segments, and these line segments continue beyond this crossing. The line segments are called "chols". The grid board has 20 intersection points and 18 endpoints thus creating a grid board of 38 points (spaces) which is smaller than the 64 squares (spaces) of Turkish draughts and Armenian draughts. The points on the board are numbered from 1 to 38. The crossing of the horizontal and vertical lines produces square spaces between them; a square space is called a "köl" or lake. These square spaces are a not a structural or functional component of the game, but it suggest how the Khakas people view this game.

Each player has 12 men or checkers or "hullar" ("hullar" is the plural form of "hul", and hul means servant) distinguishable from the other player (whereas each player has 16 men in Turkish draughts and Armenian draughts), and they are usually distinguished as white and black hul pieces. Each player's 12 hul pieces are initially placed in their respective first two ranks leaving only the two central rows vacant at the beginning of the game. The white hul pieces are placed on points 1 to 12, and the black hul pieces are placed on points 27 to 38. White moves first to begin the game. As in Turkish draughts, a hul may only move one step orthogonally forward or sideways (left or right) in a single turn. A hul promotes to a "tobit" (the equivalent of a king in draughts). When reaching the other player's first rank; specifically the endpoint of a vertical chol (vertical line segment) on the other player's side of the board. Since there are five vertical chols, then there are five endpoints in total where a hul can promote to become a tobit. The tobit may move any number of unoccupied steps forward, backward, or sideways (all four orthogonal directions) in a single turn.

A hul may capture an orthogonally adjacent opponent's hul or tobit (in any of the four orthogonal directions - forward, left, right, and backwards) using the short leap as in draughts. This is unlike Turkish or Armenian draughts where their non-promoted men are limited to captures made forward or sideways. A tobit may capture an opponent's hul or tobit in any of the four orthogonal directions like a flying king in Turkish or Armenian draughts. Opponent pieces may need not be adjacent to the tobit, but if the opponent piece is not adjacent, the path to it must be unoccupied; the tobit may land on any unoccupied point behind the opponent piece, so long as there are no obstructions between the capture piece and the space the tobit lands on. Captures are mandatory, therefore a hul or tobit must capture their opponent's hul or tobit if possible. A hul or tobit must continue capturing if it can in a single turn, hence more than one piece may be captured in a single turn. If more than one available sequence of captures is available, any one of them can be chosen as long as the player completes the chosen sequence of captures.

A player wins if he eliminates all of his opponent's pieces or blocks them so that they cannot perform a legal move or if the opponent resigns. The winning player receives 2 points while the losing player receives 0 points. A position repeated 3 times is cause for a draw. [2]

The game may also be known as Gundru. The game was popular among some Tibetan monks before the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1950, and the uprising in 1959, and among aristocratic families.

Pasang is a two-player abstract strategy board game from Brunei. The game is often referred to as Pasang Emas which is actually a software implementation of the traditional board game. The object of this game is to acquire the most points by capturing black and white tokens on the board. Black tokens are worth 1 point, and white tokens are worth 2 points. The board is initially laid out with all 120 black and white tokens in one of over 30 traditional patterns. Players choose a piece called a "ka" which is used to capture the tokens on the board. Each player's "ka" moves around the board capturing as many tokens as possible. As a note, the "kas" are the only mobile pieces in the game. The other pieces are stationary, and are captured by the "kas". Players must capture token(s) during their turn, or lose the game. When all tokens have been captured from the board, the player with the most points is the winner. However, if there are any tokens left on the board, and none can be captured on a player's turn, then that player loses the game, and the other player is the winner.

Dash-guti is a two-player abstract strategy board game from India, specifically from Central Provinces, United Provinces, Karwi Subdivision where it is called Kowwu Dunki which is the same name given to another similar game called Lau kata kati, and it was described by H.J.R. Murray in A History of Board-Games Other Than Chess (1952). The game is related to Draughts and even more so to Alquerque. Pieces are captured by leaping over them. Dash-guti consists of a Lau kata kati board, but with the addition of two line segments connected to the vertex but exterior to both triangles. Dash-guti belongs to a specific category of games called Indian War-games, and the other games in this category are Lau kata kati, Egara-guti, Pretwa, Gol-skuish. All Indian War-games have one important thing in common, and that is that all the pieces are laid out on the grid patterned board, with only one vacant point in the centre. This forces the first move to be played on the central point, and captured by the other player's piece.

Zamma is a two-player abstract strategy game from Africa. It is especially played in Mauritania. The game is similar to alquerque and draughts. Board sizes vary, but they are square boards, such as 5x5 or 9x9 square grids with left and right diagonal lines running through several intersection points of the board. One could think of the 5x5 board as a standard alquerque board, but with additional diagonal lines, and the 9x9 board as four standard alquerque boards combined, but no additional diagonal lines are added. The initial setup is also similar to alquerque, where every space on the board is filled with each player's pieces except for the middle point of the board. Furthermore, each player's pieces are also set up on their respective half of the board. The game specifically resembles draughts in that pieces must move in the forward directions until they are crowned "Mullah" which is the equivalent of the king in draughts. The Edhayam can move in any direction. In Mauritania, the black pieces are referred to as men, and the white pieces as women. In the Sahara, short sticks represent the men, and camel dung represent the women.

Kharbaga is a two-player abstract strategy game from North Africa. In a way, it is a miniature version of Zamma; however, there are more diagonal lines per square on the board as compared to Zamma. The game is considered part of the Zamma family. The game is also similar to Alquerque and draughts. The board is essentially an Alquerque board with twice the number of diagonal lines or segments allowing for greater freedom of movement. The initial setup is also similar to Alquerque, where every space on the board is filled with each player's pieces except for the middle point of the board. Moreover, each player's pieces are also set up on each player's half of the board. The game specifically resembles draughts in that pieces must move in the forward directions until they are crowned "Mullah" which is the equivalent of the King in draughts. The Mullah can move in any direction.

Dablo is a family of two-player strategy board games of the Sámi people. Different variants of the game have been played in different parts of Sápmi.

Armenian draughts, or Tama, is a variant of draughts played in Armenia. The rules are similar to Dama. Armenian draughts, however, allows for diagonal movement.

Tiger and buffaloes is a two-player abstract strategy board game from Myanmar. It belongs to the hunt game family. The board is a 4x4 square grid, where pieces are placed on the intersection points and move along the lines. It is one of the smallest hunt games. Three tigers are going up against eleven buffaloes. The tigers attempt to capture as many of the buffaloes by the short leap as in draughts or alquerque. The buffaloes attempt to hem in the tigers.

Astar is a two-player abstract strategy board game from Kyrgyzstan. It is a game similar to draughts and Alquerque as players hop over one another's pieces when capturing. However, unlike draughts and Alquerqe, Astar is played on 5×6 square grid with two triangular boards attached on two opposite sides of the grid. The board somewhat resembles those of kotu ellima, sixteen soldiers, and peralikatuma, all of which are games related to astar. However, these three games use an expanded alquerque board with a 5×5 square grid with diagonal lines. Astar uses a 5×6 grid with no diagonal lines.

Dameo is an abstract strategy board game for two players invented by Christian Freeling in 2000. It is a variant of the game draughts and is played on an 8×8 checkered gameboard.

Keny is a draughts game played in the Caucasus and nearby areas of Turkey. Keny is actually the Ossetian name for the game as it is most popular in Ossetia, a region in the Caucasus. In Armenia, it is called Vayut tama. The game is also known as Caucasian checkers. There may be slight variations of the game, but the rules described here are from Nikita Sokolov from his article "It's been a while since we took checkers into our hands..." (2005).

Frisian draughts is a variant of draughts native to Friesland in the Netherlands. The rules are similar to International draughts, but is notable for its unique feature of allowing for orthogonal captures in addition to the familiar diagonal capture of most draughts variants.
