Toby David Basner (born July 29,1984) is an American professional baseball umpire. He umpired his first Major League Baseball (MLB) game on June 24,2012.
Basner was born on July 29,1984,in Bowling Green,Ohio. He graduated from Brookwood High School in Georgia. He had been umpiring baseball games since the age of 12. He attended the Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School at the age of 19,where he was identified as an umpiring prospect by a professional evaluation course. He reported to the rookie-level Gulf Coast League. He spent several seasons in the lower minor leagues. He worked his first full season in Triple-A in 2010. [1]
Basner debuted in the major leagues on June 24,2012. [2] Through the end of the 2016 season,Basner has umpired 323 MLB games,and has issued 11 ejections.
During a game between the Toronto Blue Jays and Minnesota Twins on May 21,2016,Toronto third baseman and reigning American League MVP Josh Donaldson made a comment towards the Minnesota dugout after a first-inning groundout. Basner,thinking Donaldson was addressing him,ejected him from the game,a game Toronto would go on to lose. [3] [4] Basner's wife later bragged about the incident on social media,referring to her husband as a "boss";she closed all of her social media accounts soon after. [5] Crew chief Joe West referred to the incident as "the funniest darn ejection I’ve ever seen." [6]

Jerry Blake Layne is an American umpire in Major League Baseball who has worked in the National League between 1989 and 1999,and throughout both major leagues since 2000. He wore uniform number 24 in the NL,but when MLB merged the AL and NL umpiring staffs in 2000,Layne was forced to switch to number 26,as AL umpire Al Clark,who also wore 24,had more seniority. When Clark was fired midway through the 2001 season by MLB,Layne reclaimed number 24 and has worn it ever since. With the retirements of Joe West and Gerry Davis,Layne became MLB's most senior active umpire for the 2022 season.
John Francis Hirschbeck is a former umpire for Major League Baseball. He worked in the American League from 1984 to 1999 and worked in both leagues from 2000 to 2016. He was a crew chief at the time of his retirement,and wore uniform number 17 throughout his career. Hirschbeck announced his retirement following the 2016 season. In 2000,Hirschbeck was elected as the first president of the newly certified World Umpires Association,a position he held until 2009.
