Toby Henry Somerville Pettman (born 11 May 1998) is a retired English first-class cricketer who played for Nottinghamshire,Oxford University Cricket Club and Oxford MCCU.
Pettman was born at Kingston upon Thames in May 1998. He was educated at Tonbridge School,before going up to Jesus College,Oxford to read classics,graduating in 2020 with a Double First. [1] While studying at Oxford,Pettman made four appearances in first-class cricket for Oxford University against Cambridge University in The University Matches of 2017,2018,2019 and 2020, [2] captaining the side in the 2020 game (the last to have first-class status). In addition to playing for Oxford University,Pettman also made three first-class appearances for Oxford MCCU against Kent in 2018 and Middlesex and Hampshire in 2019. [lower-alpha 1] [2] In seven first-class matches,Pettman scored 122 runs at an average of 17.42 and a high score of 54 not out,while with his right-arm fast-medium bowling he took 33 wickets at a bowling average of 21.15,twice taking a five wicket haul. [1] He recorded his best figures of 5 for 19 in The University Match of 2019. [3]
After leaving Oxford in 2020,Pettman was about to start a job in data analytics when he was offered a one-year professional cricket contract by Nottinghamshire coach Peter Moores. He played for the Nottinghamshire 2nd XI in 2021 and then signed another one-year contract for 2022. [4] In November 2021,he was selected for a Marylebone Cricket Club squad to play a tournament in Almería,Spain. [5]
Pettman began the 2022 season once again in the Nottinghamshire 2nd XI. In June 2022,he joined Derbyshire on a short-term loan. [6] Making his County Championship debut against Middlesex at Queen's Park,Chesterfield,he took 3 wickets for 40 runs to record the best bowling figures in Derbyshire's first innings. [7] Later in the month he also played a single Championship game for Kent as a short-term loan signing to cover for injuries. [8] [9]
On 20 August 2022,Pettman made his List A debut for Nottinghamshire in a One-Day Cup match against Leicestershire,taking 1/45 off nine overs and scoring five not out. [10] In his second game of the competition three days later,he took a career-best 4/44 against Surrey. [11]
Pettman signed a new two-year contract with Nottinghamshire in October 2022. [12] He announced his retirement from professional cricket in September 2024. [13]
Joseph Liam Denly is an English professional cricketer who plays for Kent County Cricket Club. He is a right-handed batsman and occasional leg break bowler who plays as a top-order batsman. Denly played age group cricket for Kent and began his professional career with the county before moving to Middlesex for three seasons between 2012 and 2014. He won the Professional Cricketers' Association Player of the Year award in 2018 and was named the season's Most Valuable Player.
Charles Edward Shreck is an English former professional cricketer who has also played first-class cricket in New Zealand. He is a right-handed batsman and a right-arm fast-medium bowler.
Philip Steffan Jones is a former professional cricketer who played for Somerset, Northamptonshire, Derbyshire and Kent County Cricket Clubs. He was a right-handed batsman and right-arm fast-medium pace bowler. He is now a teacher and occasionally a bowling coach.
John Crossland was an English professional cricketer who played first-class cricket between 1878 and 1887. Crossland was recognised as one of the fastest bowlers in county cricket, but critics generally believed that he threw, rather than bowled the ball, a practice illegal in cricket. Contemporaries suggest that, but for the suspicions over his bowling action, Crossland would have played Test cricket for England.
Arthur William Ridley was an English first-class cricketer. Ridley was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm underarm medium pace. He also played occasionally as a wicket-keeper.
Luke Jack Fletcher is an English cricketer who bats right-handed and bowls right-arm medium-fast. He played for Nottinghamshire from 2008 until 2024, with loan spells at Derbyshire and Surrey. In franchise cricket, he has played for Wellington Firebirds and Welsh Fire. Fletcher was voted the County Championship Player of the Year in 2021.
David John Halfyard was an English professional cricketer who played first-class cricket for Kent County Cricket Club and Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club between 1956 and 1970. He was primarily a bowler and took nearly 1,000 wickets during his first-class career. He also played Minor County cricket for Northumberland, Durham and Cornwall. Following a road traffic accident in 1962, Halfyard retired from cricket to become an umpire but was able to return to the game in 1968.
Andrew Carter is an English cricketer. A right-handed batsman and right-hand medium pace bowler, he began his county career with Nottinghamshire, making his first-class debut for them in June 2009. He also played on loan for Essex in 2010 and Glamorgan in 2015 while with Nottinghamshire. Carter joined Derbyshire prior to the 2016 season, but left the club later in the year. He represented England Lions in 2011.
Adam Matthew Rossington is an English professional cricketer who plays for Essex County Cricket Club. Rossington is a right-handed batsman who fields as a wicket-keeper. He was born in Edgware, Middlesex, and was educated at Mill Hill School.
Stuart William Poynter is an English-born Irish cricketer who has played for Durham County Cricket Club as a wicket-keeper. He made his One Day International debut against Scotland in September 2014. He made his Twenty20 International debut against Scotland on 18 June 2015.
Cameron Tate Steel is an English and American cricketer who plays for Surrey. He is a right-handed batsman and right arm leg spin bowler.
Harry William Podmore is an English professional cricketer who plays for Glamorgan County Cricket Club. A right-arm medium-fast bowler who bats right-handed, he played youth cricket for Middlesex and made his debut for the county in 2014 before spending time on loan with Glamorgan, Durham and Derbyshire over the next two seasons. He made his first-class cricket debut on 1 May 2016 in the 2016 County Championship and played for Kent between 2018 and 2022; he was awarded his county cap in 2019 and left the county at the end of the 2022 season, moving to Glamorgan.
In 2017, Kent County Cricket Club competed in Division Two of the County Championship, the Royal London One-Day Cup and the NatWest t20 Blast. In addition, before the start of the English cricket season, Kent competed in the 2016–17 Regional Super50, the List A competition of the West Indian domestic season. This was the first time that any English county had competed in an overseas domestic competition. The invitation to take part in the tournament was largely due to the influence of former West Indian captain Jimmy Adams who had been Kent's Head Coach until September 2016.
Conor McKerr is an English-South African cricketer who plays county cricket in England for Surrey County Cricket Club. McKerr holds a British passport. He made his first-class debut on loan to Derbyshire in 2017.
Matthew Edward Milnes is an English professional cricketer who currently plays for Yorkshire County Cricket Club, having moved from Kent at the end of the 2022 season. Milnes was born in Nottingham and grew up in the city and attended West Bridgford School in the city before going to Durham University. A seam bowler, he was part of the Nottinghamshire Academy programme before making his first-class cricket debut in April 2014 for Durham MCC University against Derbyshire. He received a Half-Palatinate for his cricketing activities at university.
