Tog Wajaale (also known as Wajaale, Wajale, Tug Wajale, Togwajaale) is a city on the border of Somaliland and Ethiopia. [2] Tog Wajaale is the main border crossing for goods coming in and out of Somaliland, primarily from the port city of Berbera, Somaliland's main port. [3]
The settlements on the Ethiopian side of the border are called Togo Wuchale, Togo Chale, Wajaale, etc., and are located about 20 km southwest of Tog Wajaale in Somaliland.
Wajaale's population was estimated at 10,000 in 1995 and 40,000 in 2012. The city is exclusively inhabited by the Somali ethnic group, with the Jibril Abokor sub divisions of the Sa'ad Musa subclan of the Habar Awal Isaaq, dominating both the town itself and the wider Wajaale district. [4] [5]

According to the 2007 census conducted by the Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia (CSA) the Ethiopian part of the town (Togo Wuchale) had a population of 14,438. [6]
Wajale is located the border of Somaliland and Ethiopia. [2] 92.8 km west of Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland. It is in the south west of Kalabaydh town, on the west by the Awdal region, on the east by the Gabiley, Hargeisa City, and on the south by the Somali Region of Ethiopia.

Since December 1985, refugees from Ethiopia have been taking refuge in Wajaale camps, reaching 45,000 as of April 1986. Seventy percent of the refugees were Oromo. [7]
In 2002, the World Health Organization listed 11 border towns in Somaliland, including Wajaale. Wajaale and Lawyacado are home to customs and immigration offices. [8]

In December 2020, the Somaliland government's authorization of an Ethiopian logistics provider to transport vegetables directly to Hargeisa was denounced by Wajaale logistics, which has no logistics authority in Ethiopia, as a decision that would lead to unfair competition. [16]
As of November 2022, the road connecting Wajaale and Kalabaydh is under repair. [17]
Beginning in the early 1960s, a conflict between the Jibril Abokor of Isaaq and the Reer Nuur of Gadabursi occurred, which affected Wajaale. This conflict lasted for a long time in the areas inhabited by both clans, but reconciliation took place in Wajaale. [18]
In the 1964 Ethiopian-Somali War, fighting between Ethiopian and Somali forces occurred in Wajaale, largely destroying the town. [19] [20]

When taxes on Somalis were raised in Ogaden, Ethiopia, the number of people migrating to the Somaliland border town of Wajaale surged, doubling its population. This led to a shortage of ballots for the 2002 Somaliland regional elections. [23]
In March 2008, the President of Somaliland announced the creation of six new regions and 14 new districts, with Wajaale becoming the Wajaale District of Gabiley region. [24] However, this classification was not approved by Parliament and did not take root.

Awdal is an administrative region (gobol) in western Somaliland. It was separated from Woqooyi Galbeed and became a province in 1984 and is the most northwesterly province of Somaliland. To the east it borders Maroodi Jeex and Sahil; to its north-west it borders Djibouti; to its south and south-west lies Ethiopia; and the Gulf of Aden to its north. The province has an estimated population of 1,010,566. The region comprises the four districts of Borama, the regional capital, Baki, Lughaya, and Zeila.
Marodi Jeh is an administrative region (gobol) in western Somaliland. It is the most populous region of the country. It is bordered by Awdal to the west, Sahil to the north, Togdheer to the east and Ethiopia to the south. Marodi Jeh was created by splitting the previously existing region (gobolka). Ahmed Hassan Awke was a veteran Somali journalist, who spent most of his life in the media industry. Awke is often considered to be one of the best Somali journalists because of his very linguistic eloquence, and was often used as a favorite commentator. He served as a special reporter for Somalia's late president Siad Barre until it collapsed in 1991. He hailed from the Jibril Abokor, a Sa'ad Musa sub-division of the Habr Awal Isaaq clan that predominately inhabits the Gabiley region.
The Governor of Awdal is the chief executive of the Somaliland region of Awdal, leading the region's executive branch. Governors of the regions is appointed to the office by the Somaliland president.
