Tokay Tomah (born 1968, died November 14, 2017) was a singer, dancer, and activist who used performance and the arts to demand disarmament in Liberia. [1]
Tokay Tomah was born during 1968 in Buutuo, Liberia, located in Nimba County. She was of Gio descent, one of the sixteen ethnic groups in Liberia. Her father was a prominent Chief, Chief Tomah of Buutuo, and was featured in a book on Liberian arts by art historian Robert Farris Thompson. [2] She was named "Tokay", which means "stay in the house", and was her parents’ sixth and most favored child. [3]
She gave birth to a daughter, Jamah Ndoma, who would become a gospel singer. [3]
Tokay Tomah died on November 14, 2017, while working in Environmental Services the Paoli Hospital in Paoli, Pennsylvania. [2] She was buried at the Saint Peter and Saint Paul Cemetery in Springfield, Pennsylvania. [4]
In 1976 the President of Liberia, William Tolbert, and Peter Ballah, the Director of Culture for Liberia in the 1970s, conducted a tour of Nimba County, Liberia. They observed a young Tomah, who was about ten years old, [2] performing in a traditional dance performance, prompting him to invite her to move to Monrovia and join the National Cultural Troupe. She would live in the Troupe's home base, Kendeja, a performers’ village, [5] where she trained as a backup singer for performers such as Liberian singer Fatu Gayflor. [6]
In 1977, Tomah, along with the other members of the National Cultural Troupe, performed at the Second International Festival of African Culture, located in Nigeria. [7] Following the onset of the First Liberian Civil War in 1989, the National Cultural Troupe’s performances focused on anti-war messages and peace-building lyrics, some of which were composed by Tomah. One of these compositions was later chosen by the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace as a theme song, “We Need Peace/No More War.” [2]
Tomah also collaborated with many nongovernmental organizations, including the Liberian organization Women and Society, of which she was the executive director. [6] During the first Liberian civil war throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, Tomah continued her peace-building efforts through work with the United Nations, focusing principally on disarmament. [8]
Tomah garnered the nickname of “The Queen of the Stage" as well as significant recognition as a result of her mainstream music career. [3] In 2000, Tomah produced her first solo album and in 2001, released her debut record, Chay Chay Poley. Its title track went on to become a hit single. [8] In subsequent years, Tomah produced six albums, including Open the Door, the 2010 hit album, and What You Know About Me, her final studio album, released in 2012. [3] Her music has received awards from the Musicians Union of Liberia. [8] Tomah toured and performed her songs in many African countries, Europe, and the United States. [3]
In 2010, Tomah relocated permanently to the United States, where she, along with other members of the National Cultural Troupe, founded and continued to perform through the Liberian Women’s Chorus for Change in Philadelphia, started in 2013. [6]
Tomah was prominently featured in a 2018 documentary produced by the Philadelphia Folklore Project, Because of the War. The film documents the work of four Liberian performers who use traditional song and dance to engage Liberian communities. Because of the War was directed and produced by Toni Shapiro-Phim, a scholar whose work focuses largely on the relationship between the arts, de-escalation, conflict resolution, and women’s roles in peace-building processes. The film also features three of Tomah’s colleagues in the Liberian Women’s Chorus for Change: Zaye Tete, Marie Nyenabo, and Fatu Gayflor. [9] In the film, when referencing her work with combatants, Tomah states, “I’m going to pass messages over to people who are very bitter. What can I do to make them to turn sweet?” [2]
In 2014, Tomah received a Leeway Art and Change Grant to craft a traditional Liberian composition and later recorded a music video for the purpose of educating youth in the Philadelphia area about the HIV/AIDS crisis. [10] Additionally, Tomah was granted a Leeway Transformation Award in that same year. [11] In 2016 Tomah was the recipient of a Pew Fellowship in the Arts. [1]

Serving as leader of the Independent National Patriotic Front of Liberia, he captured, tortured and executed President Samuel Doe, who had himself overthrown and murdered the previous president William R. Tolbert Jr.
Sanniquellie is a city and the capital of Nimba County and Sanniquellie-Mahn District, Liberia. It is located in the north-east of the country at coordinates 07°21'49" N 008°42'40" W. The average altitude of the city is 420 metres above the sea level. As of the 2008 national census, the population stood at 11,415. The most represented tribes are Mano, Gio and Mandingo.
The First Liberian Civil War was the first in a series of two civil wars within the West African nation of Liberia. It lasted from 1989 to 1997. President Samuel Doe established a regime in 1980 but totalitarianism and corruption led to unpopularity and the withdrawal of support from the United States by the late 1980s. The National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL) led by Charles Taylor invaded Liberia from the Ivory Coast to overthrow Doe in December 1989 and gained control over most of the country within a year. Doe was captured and executed by the Independent National Patriotic Front of Liberia (INPFL), a splinter faction of the NPFL led by Prince Johnson, in September 1990. The NPFL and INPFL fought each other for control of the capital city, Monrovia and against the Armed Forces of Liberia and pro-Doe United Liberation Movement of Liberia for Democracy. Peace negotiations and foreign involvement led to a ceasefire in 1995 but fighting continued until a peace agreement between the main factions occurred in August 1996. Taylor was elected President of Liberia following the 1997 Liberian general election and entered office in August of the same year.

Leymah Roberta Gbowee is a Liberian peace activist responsible for leading a women's nonviolent peace movement, Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace that helped bring an end to the Second Liberian Civil War in 2003. Her efforts to end the war, along with her collaborator Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, helped usher in a period of peace and enabled a free election in 2005 that Sirleaf won. Gbowee and Sirleaf, along with Tawakkul Karman, were awarded the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize "for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women's rights to full participation in peace-building work."

Suah Koko was an indigenous Liberian ruler who lived between the late 19th and early 20th century. She fought several battles against the expansionary Liberia Frontier Force before entering negotiations to grant accession of the territory she ruled over to the Liberian government. She later became a paramount chief and supplied porters to the Harvard Medical African Expedition (1926–1927).

Agnes Nebo von Ballmoos was a Liberian professor of music, scholar of Liberian folk music, conductor, composer, and lawyer. Von Ballmoos contributed to the preservation of Liberian folk music by collecting and transcribing folk music representing diverse cultural traditions around the country and composing original arrangements of traditional songs. She also taught at the University of Liberia for nearly thirty years, directing the university choir. Under her leadership, the choir gave concerts at venues around the world, performing a varied repertoire which included classical pieces, spirituals, and traditional Liberian music.
