Tolulope Obanro known professionally as Tolu Obanro is a Nigerian film composer. He composed the scores for Gangs of Lagos , Jagun Jagun and A Tribe Called Judah which became the first Nollywood movie to hit 1 billion naira at the box office. As of 2024, he is the highest-grossing film composer at the Nigerian box office. [2]

Early life and education

Tolulope Obanro was born in Ilorin, Kwara State but spent most of his childhood in Lokoja, Kogi State where he schooled at Government Science Secondary School for his secondary school. He earned a bachelor's degree in Geology from Federal University of Technology, Minna before proceeding to the National Broadcast Academy in Lagos State. [3]

Career

Tolu Obanro first worked in the oil and gas sector before transitioning to a career in the music industry. [4] He initially was a gospel music producer for artists such as Mike Abdul, Kenny Kore and Monique before working as a film composer. [1] After scoring for some YouTube videos, Obanro's first feature film was Your Excellency (2019) which was followed by the Netflix series King of Boys: The Return of the King in 2021 [4] His second feature film, Progressive Tailors Club (2021), was the first of a series of films directed by Niyi Akinmolayan for which Obanro composed the music and followed by the Prophetess (2021), Mikolo (2023) Jagun Jagun (2023), [5] House of Secrets (2023) and Lisabi: The Uprising (2024). Other notable partnerships include with directors Jade Osiberu on Brotherhood (2022) and Gangs of Lagos (2023), and Funke Akindele. In addition to Your Excellency, which was both Akindele and Obanro's feature film debut as director and composer respectively, they collaborated on Battle on Buka Street (2022), and a Tribe Called Judah (2023), the first Nollywood movie to hit ₦1 billion naira at the box office. Obanro cites Hans Zimmer, Ludwig Göransson and M. M. Keeravani as his major influences. [4]

Awards and nominations

In 2022, Obanro won the Nigerians Achievers Award and has been nominated for the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) three times in the Best Soundtrack category. [6]

Tobi Makinde is Nigerian actor and filmmaker. He became popular with his role as 'Timini' in the Nigerian TV series Jenifa's Diary. He co-directed one of the highest Nollywood grossing movie Battle on Buka Street, alongside Funke Akindele. In 2024, he received critical and audience acclaim for his portrayal of 'Shina Judah', a hoodlum in the blockbluster A Tribe Called Judah.
