Tom Kleinlein is the former director of athletics for Georgia Southern University. [1] [2] [3] [4] He previously served as assistant athletic director for Kent State University and Arizona State University. [5] Kleinlein attended college at Wake Forest University, where he played on the offensive line for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons football team between 1989 and 1992. [6] Kleinlein resigned his position at Georgia Southern on January 3, 2020. [7] Kleinlein was named deputy athletic director at the University of Mississippi on January 4, 2020. [8]

The Georgia Southern Eagles football program represents Georgia Southern University in football as part of the Sun Belt Conference. The current head coach is Clay Helton. The Eagles have won six FCS (I-AA) national championships and have produced two Walter Payton Award winners. Georgia Southern first continuously fielded a football team in 1924, but play was suspended for World War II and did not return until 1981. The Eagles competed as an FCS independent from 1984 to1992 and as a member of the Southern Conference from 1993 to 2013, winning 10 SoCon championships. In 2014, Georgia Southern moved to the FBS level and joined the Sun Belt Conference, winning the conference championship outright in its first year. Georgia Southern's main Sun Belt rival is Appalachian State.

U.S. Route 80 (US 80) is a 296-mile-long (476 km) U.S. Highway in the U.S. state of Georgia. It travels west-to-east from the Alabama state line in Columbus across the central portion of the state through cities such as Macon, Dublin, Statesboro, and Savannah to connect to its eastern terminus at an intersection with Tybrisa Street and Inlet Avenue in Tybee Island, near the Atlantic Ocean. Here, the roadway continues as Butler Avenue. US-80 is the main east-west non-Interstate route through Georgia.

Savannah State Tigers basketball

The Savannah State Tigers basketball team represents Savannah State University and competes in NCAA Division II as a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference since July 2019. The Tigers play their home games in Tiger Arena on the university's Savannah, Georgia campus.

Savannah State Lady Tigers basketball

The Savannah State Lady Tigers women's basketball team represents Savannah State University in women's basketball. The school competes in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Lady Tigers play home games at Tiger Arena in Savannah, Georgia. The current head coach is Cedric Baker. Baker was named head coach on July 30, 2003.

The 2014 Georgia Southern Eagles football team represented Georgia Southern University in the 2014 NCAA Division I FBS football season. They were led by first-year head coach Willie Fritz and played their home games at Paulson Stadium. They were first year members of the Sun Belt Conference. In their second year of the FCS to FBS transition, the Eagles were eligible for the conference championship; however, they were not bowl-eligible.

Georgia Southern–Georgia State rivalry

The Georgia Southern–Georgia State rivalry, also known as Modern Day Hate, is a college athletics rivalry between the Georgia Southern Eagles and Georgia State Panthers. Both schools are members of the Sun Belt Conference (SBC). For the 2021–22 school year, the men's soccer rivalry temporarily moved to the Mid-American Conference, with both schools joining that league for men's soccer after the SBC disbanded its men's soccer league. However, SBC expansion in 2022 and the addition of three "Power Five" programs led to the reinstatement of SBC men's soccer effective in 2022–23. While the teams have only met eight times in football, the rivalry dates back to the 1970s in basketball and other sports.

Armstrong State Pirates and Lady Pirates Defunct sports program of Armstrong State University

The Armstrong State Pirates were the athletic teams that represented Armstrong State University, located in Savannah, Georgia, in NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports. The Pirates and Lady Pirates competed as members of the Peach Belt Conference for all 11 varsity sports. Armstrong had been a member of the Peach Belt from 1990 until the discontinuation of the Pirates athletic program in 2017.

The 2016 Georgia Southern Eagles football team represented Georgia Southern University in the 2016 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Eagles played their home games at Paulson Stadium in Statesboro, Georgia, and competed in the Sun Belt Conference. They were led by first-year head coach Tyson Summers. They finished the season 5–7, 4–4 in Sun Belt play to finish in sixth place.

The 2020 Georgia Southern Eagles football team represented Georgia Southern University during the 2020 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Eagles played their home games at Paulson Stadium in Statesboro, Georgia, and competed in the East Division of the Sun Belt Conference. They were led by third-year head coach Chad Lunsford.

Jared Benko is the current director of athletics for Georgia Southern University. He previously served as deputy athletic director for Mississippi State University, as assistant athletic director for Auburn University, and in various administrative positions for the University of Arkansas and the University of Georgia. Benko attended college at the University of Georgia, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in sports studies in 2005, and a master's degree in public administration in 2007. Benko was named athletic director at Georgia Southern University on March 5, 2020.
