Thomas Michael McAlpin (born 1959 in Miami, Florida) is the Chairman and former CEO of Virgin Voyages. [1] [2] He previously served as president and CEO of The World , a privately owned residential ship. [3] McAlpin also served as president of Disney Cruises, where he oversaw two cruise ships, the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder as well as Disney's private island Castaway Cay. [4]

Early life and education

McAlpin was born in Miami, Florida in 1959. He earned his bachelor's degree in Accounting and Finance from Florida State University and a master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Miami. [5]

Career

In 1981, McAlpin began his career as a senior auditor for KPMG and in 1984 became the chief financial officer for the CSB Leasing Group. [6] In 1986, he joined Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd. as director of Corporate Planning and Analysis and held this position for eight years. [6] [7]

McAlpin joined Disney Cruises as part of the founding management team in 1995 as vice president of finance, business development and shore-side travel operations. [5] [8] During the creation of Disney Cruises, he was responsible for planning the first two ships and negotiating the contracts for Castaway Cay. McAlpin was with the company for 14 years and served as president for the final five years of his tenure. [9] [10]

In July 2009, McAlpin joined ResidenSea, Ltd., the company responsible for the condo cruise ship, The World, as president and chief executive. [11] During his five years with the company McAlpin oversaw an $11 million renovation of the ship. [12] He resigned from his role at The World and joined Virgin Cruises as president and CEO in 2014. Other activities

McAlpin is a member of the Florida State University Foundation Board of Trustees. [6] He was previously a member of the national board of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the chairman in 2012. [7]

<i>Disney Wonder</i> Cruise ship built in 1999

Disney Wonder is a 25 year old cruise ship operated by Disney Cruise Line. It was the second ship to join the Disney fleet on entering service in 1999. Disney Wonder is of the same class as Disney Magic. The other three ships in the fleet are the Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish. The interior of Disney Wonder is decorated in the Art Nouveau style, in contrast to her sister ship, Disney Magic which is decorated in the Art Deco style. Both ships have 11 public decks, can accommodate 2,400 passengers in 875 staterooms, and have a crew of approximately 950. Disney Wonder was built in the year following completion of Disney Magic. As of 2015, Disney Wonder sails various North American itineraries on a seasonal basis. From early September to late October 2016, the ship underwent dry dock in Cadiz, Spain, where she was given many new dining, entertainment, and accommodation enhancements.

Disney's Castaway Cay, or simply Castaway Cay, is a private island in the Bahamas which serves as an exclusive port for the Disney Cruise Line ships. It is located near Great Abaco Island and was formerly known as Gorda Cay. In 1997, The Walt Disney Company purchased a 99-year land lease for the cay from the Bahamian government, giving the company substantial control over the island.

Scarlet Lady is a cruise ship owned and operated by Virgin Voyages. She is the inaugural ship for the cruise line and was delivered on 14 February 2020 by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri. The 110,000 GT vessel was initially set to begin operating on 1 April 2020 but the COVID-19 pandemic postponed her official debut until 6 October 2021, after which she sailed her inaugural voyage to the Bahamas from her homeport of Miami. In accordance with Virgin Voyages's business model, Scarlet Lady operates exclusively as an "adults-only" ship for guests aged 18 and over.

<i>Disney Wish</i> Cruise ship operated by Disney Cruise Line

Disney Wish is the fifth cruise ship owned and operated by Disney Cruise Line, a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company. She is the largest ship in the fleet and the first of the Wish-class. She entered service in June 2022 and will be followed by her sister ships the Disney Treasure in 2024 and the Disney Destiny in 2025. The other four ships in the fleet are the Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, and Disney Fantasy. The Disney Adventure will join the fleet in 2025.

Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, or simply Lookout Cay, is a private peninsula in The Bahamas which serves as an exclusive port for the Disney Cruise Line ships. It is located in the south-eastern region of Bannerman Town, South Eleuthera. In March 2019, The Walt Disney Company purchased the peninsula from the Bahamian government, giving the company control over the area.
