Anthony John Cochrane AM is an Australian businessman, best known for event promotion and sports administration.

Cochrane was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the 2021 Queen's Birthday Honours. [1]

Event promotion

Cochrane has been involved in event promotion since the 1970s, and has promoted or produced tours for several international and local artists, including The Rolling Stones, Sammy Davis Jr., Placido Domingo and The Main Event Tour featuring John Farnham, Olivia Newton-John and Anthony Warlow. [2] [3] Cochrane once spent a week sleeping on Frank Sinatra's floor in order to convince him to return to tour Australia, despite previously vowing he never would. [4]

Cochrane's theatre credits include Grease: The Arena Spectacular and Australian productions of musicals including The Sound of Music , Annie and Hairspray , for which he and his fellow producers won a Tony award. [3] He also collected ARIA's for Platinum albums. [5] He is the global Chairman of IWEFO, International World Exhibition and Festival Organization. [6] In 2012, Cochrane and his wife Thea founded International Events Consulting, best known for developing and touring Exhibitionism: The Rolling Stones Exhibit globally. The company entered administration in December 2020. [7] Cochrane remained a director of Cochrane Entertainment, a company he also co-founded. [7]

Sports administration

In 1996, Cochrane and three other investors purchased the promotion rights for the Australian Touring Car Championship from IMG for $52,000. [8] In 1997, the series was renamed to V8 Supercars, and expanded to be valued at $330 million when a stake of the sport was sold to Archer Capital in 2011. [8] In 2012, Cochrane retired from his role as executive chairman of V8 Supercars. [9] Cochrane was added to the V8 Supercars Hall of Fame in 2012, becoming the first person to be inducted having not raced in the championship. [10]

In March 2014, Cochrane joined the board of the Gold Coast Suns Australian Football League club, and became chairman in March 2016. [11] In his time as chairman he maintained his reputation for being outspoken and uncompromising, particularly in his relationship with the media. [12] His blunt style has even seen him described as the Donald Trump of the AFL. [13] In 2021, SX Global, with Cochrane as president, became promoters of the new FIM Supercross World Championship. [14]

The Barry Sheene Medal is an annual award honouring the achievements of a driver in the Supercars Championship, an Australian touring car series. Tony Cochrane, the chairman of the championship's organising body Australian Vee Eight Supercar Company (AVESCO), instigated the award in 2003. The medal is named after the two-time Grand Prix motorcycle world champion and motor racing television commentator Barry Sheene. It is presented to the driver adjudged to have displayed "outstanding leadership, media interaction, character, personality, fan appeal and sportsmanship throughout the season". A panel of motor racing journalists individually award three drivers scores of three, two and one points after every event of the season. The results are announced at the series' end-of-season gala in Sydney.

Anthony Lawrence Longhurst is an Australian racing driver and former Australian Champion water skier. He is most noted for his career in the Australian Touring Car Championship and V8 Supercar series. Longhurst is a two-time winner of the Bathurst 1000, winning the event in 1988 with Tomas Mezera and in 2001 with Mark Skaife, and is one of only five drivers to win Bathurst in both a Ford and a Holden.

The Surfers Paradise Street Circuit is a temporary street circuit in Surfers Paradise, in Queensland, Australia. The 2.960 km (1.839 mi) beach-side track has several fast sections and two chicanes, having been shortened from an original 4.470 km (2.778 mi) length in 2010. It is the third of three motor racing circuits that have existed in the Gold Coast region, after the Southport Road Circuit (1954–1955) and Surfers Paradise International Raceway (1966–1987).

The Mike Kable Young Gun Award is an annual motor racing award honouring the achievements of a rookie driver under the age of 30 who competes in either the Supercars Championship or the second-tier Super2 Series. Tony Cochrane, the chairman of the championship's organising body Australian Vee Eight Supercar Company (AVESCO), instigated the accolade in June 2000. It is named after Mike Kable, an Australian motoring journalist, motorsport publicist, and mentor to young racing drivers. The award is presented to the rookie driver adjudged to have performed the best over the course of their first season in either championship following a vote by a panel of motorsport experts. The recipient receives a sponsorship grant of A$15,000 to help develop themselves. The winner is announced at the series' end-of-season gala in Sydney.

The 2013 International V8 Supercars Championship was a Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile-sanctioned international motor racing series for V8 Supercars that was based in Australia. It was the fifteenth running of the V8 Supercar Championship Series and the seventeenth series in which V8 Supercars contested the premier Australian touring car title. The championship was contested over thirty-six races, starting with the Clipsal 500 Adelaide on 2 March 2013, and finishing with the Sydney 500 on 8 December. The series' calendar also expanded, travelling to the United States for the first time for a race at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

Atlanta-based international auto parts conglomerate Genuine Parts Company, through the consumer auto parts brand Repco, replaced Virgin Australia as naming rights sponsor under a five-year partnership, which was later expanded to eight years at the end of the 2022 prizegiving banquet.
