Touax (also known as Touax Group) is a French operational leasing company. Its four businesses are river barges, modular buildings, freight railcars, and shipping containers.
Touax was formed on 14 July 1853 as "Compagnie de Touage de la Basse Seine et de l’Oise". French imperial decrees, signed by Napoleon III, and granted to Eugène Godeaux on 6 April 1854 and 14 July 1855, gave the company its statutes for operation. [1] It was charged to operate a river transport service on the Seine and Oise rivers. [2]
In 1898 the company merged with Société de Touage et de Remorquage de l’Oise, and changed its name to "Société Générale de Touage et de Remorquage" (a name it held until 1994). On 7 May 1906 the company listed on the Paris stock exchange. Over the years the company diversified from river barges into freight railcars and shipping containers. It has expanded globally throughout Europe, and into North and South America, and Asia.
In the 1980s the company created Touax Corporation in the United States. The company changed its name to Touax, as well as consolidated all its business under a single entity, in 1994. The company is currently headed by members of the Walewski family.
Touax River Barges is the division of Touax which deals with river transport since the company's formation in 1855. By 1898 the company towed almost 75% of the traffic on the Seine and 70% on the Oise.
In 1954 the company ordered its first railcars, which were then managed by two independent operators. Touax acquired the operations of GE Capital Rail Services in Europe in 2015. [3]
In 1975 Touax moved into shipping containers, and in 1985 acquired Gold Container Corporation – now one of the largest shipping container lessors in the world.[ citation needed ]

Seatrain Lines, officially the Over-Seas Shipping Company, was a shipping and transportation company conducting operations in the Americas and trans-Pacific regions. Seatrain Lines began intermodal freight transport in December 1928 by transporting entire loaded railroad freight cars between the United States and Cuba. The specially designed ship Seatrain, built in England, was followed in 1932 by two larger ships built in the United States and in 1939 by two additional ships. By the outbreak of World War II the company was operating five ships that became important in the war effort and basis for the design of fifty new ships for military use. A series of business setbacks amid the rise of containerized shipping left the company in perilous financial condition in the 1970s. Seatrain Lines shut down in 1981 after filing for bankruptcy.

The Canal du Nord is a 95-kilometre (59 mi) long canal in northern France. The canal connects the Canal latéral à l'Oise at Pont-l'Évêque to the Sensée Canal at Arleux. The French government, in partnership with coal-mining companies in the Nord and Pas-de-Calais departments, developed the canal to help French coal mining companies withstand foreign competition. Construction of the canal began in 1908 but halted in 1914, because of the First World War. The war caused widespread destruction of the canal and the French government made no attempt to resume construction until 1959. Construction recommenced in 1960 and the waterway opened to the public in 1965. The Canal du Nord and the Canal de Saint-Quentin may be supplanted by the Seine–Nord Europe Canal, a projected high capacity link between the Oise River at Janville and the high capacity Dunkirk-Escaut Canal.
The Seine–Nord Europe Canal is a planned high-capacity canal in France that would link the Oise River at Compiègne with the Dunkirk-Scheldt Canal, east of Arleux. It is the French part of a proposed Seine-Scheldt canal that would ultimately connect the Rhine and Seine basins inland. The stated objective is to expand trade flows in a fuel-efficient and ecologically friendly manner between the Seine basin and Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, while reducing saturation on the A1 motorway in France and reducing the CO2 emissions in the transport sector within this corridor.
