Toy Soldiers were an American rock band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The group's sound melds elements of folk, roots rock, blues, and soul.
Toy Soldiers formed in 2007 as a two-piece with Ron Gallo as the primary songwriter, alongside former drummer Mike Baurer. [1] [2] The name Toy Soldiers was taken from a painting on display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. [3] Though the band's sound was initially lo-fi and sparse, they eventually expanded to as large as ten members, including keyboards, horns, and backing vocalists. [4] The band's membership remained fluid at times, with some members occasionally meeting each other for the first time as they took the stage for shows. [5] Their debut album, Whisper Down the Lane, was initially self-released in the fall of 2009, but after signing with MAD Dragon Records, the group re-recorded several songs for the re-release of the album. [3] [6] MAD Dragon reissued the record on May 18, 2010. [7] Critic Richie Unterberger noted the album's gospel and old-time music influences and likened Gallo's singing to that of Lou Reed and Marc Bolan. [8] The group accompanied the CD release with several live dates, [9] including as a headliner [10] and with Midlake. [11] The group played the WXPN Xponential Music Festival in July 2010. [12]
By October 2010, there was an entirely new and solidified lineup consisting of Gallo, Dominic Billett, Matt Kelly, Bill McCloskey and Luke Leidy. The new group recorded a new EP titled Get Through the Time released on Ropeadope Records on September 20, 2011. They also released a split EP, Midweek Mountain Getaway with Nashville Singer-Songwriter, Jordan Hull.
The band won The 10th Annual Independent Music Awards in the Blues Song category for their song "Throw Me Down". Toy Soldiers were also nominated for Alt. Country Album and College Label Release. [13] They were also selected as the TriStateIndie Band of the Year in 2011 and 2012. [14] They have made appearances at 2012–13 SXSW, 2008–2012 CMJ, XPoNential Music Festival 2010, Philadelphia Folk Fest 2013 and have shared the stage with Dr. Dog, Fitz and the Tantrums, The Felice Brothers, Justin Townes Earle, Jonny Fritz, The Walkmen, J. Roddy Walston and The Business and more.
In late 2012, USA Today named the band one of 5 "Bands to Watch" in 2013, saying "Toy Soldiers is a rowdy collection of five talented young musicians who have honed their sometimes soulful, often blues-y rock n roll with relentless touring during the last two years, growing into one of Philadelphia's best live bands." Seth Klinger made a documentary titled The Maybe Trails. It followed the band on their March 2012 and 2013 tours through Austin, Texas for SXSW and was premiered in April 2013 at Johnny Brenda's in Philadelphia.
In April 2013, Toy Soldiers recorded four songs at Converse Rubber Tracks Studios in Brooklyn, New York and released them digitally and on 7" vinyl (entitled Converse Rubber Tracks Sessions) [16] on July 4, 2013, [16] at their first annual 4 July BBQ in Philadelphia. [17] In June 2013, the group was selected to record a live video session for Paste Magazine at the Aloft Washington Harbor Hotel. The video premiered on Paste.com on July 15, and a few days later, Paste also premiered "Tell The Teller," [18] the first single from their upcoming album. [18]
Over the course of 15 sessions from January through August 2012, the group recorded what would become their second album (and first under the new configuration), entitled The Maybe Boys. In February 2012, the band released a limited edition EP previewing three tracks from the sessions, called Tell The Teller EP. The full-length record, including those three tracks from the preview, was released on September 10, 2013, and distributed by The Orchard. [19]

Why? is an American alternative hip hop and indie rock band. The band was founded in 2004 by Cincinnati rapper and singer Yoni Wolf, who had been using Why? as his stage name since 1997. Its lineup consists of Toby Leaman (bass), Scott McMicken, Frank McElroy, Zach Miller (keyboard), Eric Slick (drums), and Michael Libramento. Lead vocal duties are shared between Leaman and McMicken, with all members contributing harmonies. In addition, each band member has a nickname beginning with the letter T, and they have explained that friends of the band also receive nicknames, which are drawn from aspects of their lives and personalities.
Frederick Paul Mascherino is an American musician best known for his work as lead guitarist and co-lead vocalist in alternative rock band Taking Back Sunday. He is currently active with bands The Color Fred and Say Anything. Fred is also known for working with Terrible Things. He also runs the record label Heading East Records. He is vegan and straight edge.
The Seaside is the third demo album from English rock group Cardiacs. The album originally featured the second recording of what would become the band's only hit single, "Is This the Life?". It is the last of the band's releases to feature keyboard player/drummer/singer Mark Cawthra and the first to feature keyboard player William D. Drake.

Manwomanchild is a rock band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania fronted by David Hilowitz. The band was started in Rhode Island in 2008. In February 2010, the band release a self-titled EP recorded at Machines with Magnets in Pawtucket, RI. The band's lineup for the EP and album consisted of David Hilowitz on vocals, guitars, and synths, Mason Neely on drums, and Craig Gifford on bass. In May 2010, Manwomanchild released the song "Chile La Roja" in support of Chile's 2010 World Cup team. The song was featured in four national newspapers and on two Chilean TV networks.
Jason Karaban is an American singer-songwriter and musician living in Los Angeles, California. Karaban first began his career fronting the Philadelphia-based indie rock band Dragstrip Courage in 1997, and Grand in 2000. He emerged as a solo artist with the release of Doomed to Make Choices, in 2006, co-produced with Mike Napolitano. Along with vocals, Karaban plays acoustic guitar, 12-string and electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, piano and drums. Karaban has released four critically acclaimed albums, and has had a number of songs featured in film and television shows Over the course of his career, Karaban has collaborated with many notable musicians including Ani DiFranco, Lucy Schwartz, Sara Watkins and Sean Watkins, Garrison Starr, Taylor Momsen, Dave Pirner, Glen Phillips and Benmont Tench.

Ronald James Gallo III is an American musician, singer, songwriter and artist. He began a solo career in 2014, after fronting various bands including Philadelphia-based band Toy Soldiers and since then has released five albums, Heavy Meta, Stardust Birthday Party, Really Nice Guys (EP), PEACEMEAL and FOREGROUND MUSIC. Stylistically Gallo has shifted from release to release with his recent albums exploring art rock and garage punk. During live performances 2016 - 2019 Gallo was backed by bassist Joe Bisirri and drummer Dylan Sevey.

Riverby is an American indie rock band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Formed in 2018 by lead singer August Greenberg and guitarist Tyler Asay, the band released an EP, The Guide To Oversharing (2019), before signing to independent label Take This To Heart Records in 2020 and releasing their debut album, Smart Mouth. A second album, Absolution, was released in 2022. Riverby have performed alongside acts including Chris Gethard, Mannequin Pussy, and The Front Bottoms, and have been featured by WXPN and BrooklynVegan.
Sisters 3 was an American indie folk group from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, formed in 2005 by siblings Annachristie, Beatrice, and Cassandra Sadler. The group released two albums, Star Spangled (2008) and Coruscate at the Meadow Gate (2011), and found local notoriety, collaborating with artists including Hoots & Hellmouth, Sharon Little, and American Babies, and performing at the Philadelphia Folk Festival and venues including the Mann Center and Madison Square Garden. Annachristie Sadler would later find more notoriety as a solo artist under the name AC Sapphire.
