Toéssin, Bam is a village in the Rollo Department of Bam Province in northern Burkina Faso. It has a population of 1703, primarily of the Yarse ethnic group (who are assimilated with the Mossi). [1]
Rollo is a department or commune of Bam Province in north-western Burkina Faso. Its capital lies at the town of Rollo. According to the 1996 census the department has a total population of 25,631. In 2007, as part of political decentralisation, new Mayors were elected to replace the existing local politicians. Issa Ouermi was elected mayor of the Rollo Department.
Bam is one of the 45 provinces of Burkina Faso. It is in Centre-Nord Region and the capital of Bam is Kongoussi. In 2006 it had a population of 277092. It is a rural province with 252,509 of its residents living in the countryside; only 24,583 live in urban areas. There are 132,086 men living in Bam Province and 145,006 women.
Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa. It covers an area of around 274,200 square kilometres (105,900 sq mi) and is surrounded by six countries: Mali to the north; Niger to the east; Benin to the southeast; Togo and Ghana to the south; and Ivory Coast to the southwest. The July 2018 population estimate by the United Nations was 19,751,651. Burkina Faso is a francophone country, with French as the official language of government and business. Roughly 40% of the population speaks the Mossi language. Formerly called the Republic of Upper Volta (1958–1984), the country was renamed "Burkina Faso" on 4 August 1984 by then-President Thomas Sankara. Its citizens are known as Burkinabé. Its capital is Ouagadougou.
The village was known for community efforts to build soil and water conservation initiatives in the 1990s, supported by the German PATECORE project, and hosted development workers and researchers. [2] Most of the central fields around the village had stone lines (diguettes) built by the villagers, designed to slow runoff from heavy rains and allowing it to infiltrate into the soil. It also has a primary school, and groundwater is pumped from a deep tube well.
Water conservation includes all the policies, strategies and activities to sustainably manage the natural resource of fresh water, to protect the hydrosphere, and to meet the current and future human demand. Population, household size, and growth and affluence all affect how much water is used. Factors such as climate change have increased pressures on natural water resources especially in manufacturing and agricultural irrigation. Many US cities have already implemented policies aimed at water conservation, with much success.
