Trammo, Inc., (formerly known as Transammonia, Inc., also known as Trammo Group), engages in the international commerce, trade, transportation, distribution, and marketing of the raw materials critical to the fertilizer, mining, and petrochemical industries. Its products include anhydrous ammonia, sulfur, sulfuric acid, finished fertilizers, petroleum coke, and nitric acid. [3] The company was established by Ronald Stanton in 1965, [4] and is currently headquartered in New York City. Trammo owns production assets in North Bend, Ohio (Nitric Acid). Trammo also either owns or operates terminals in Meredosia and Niota, Illinois (Ammonia), Nanjing, Jiangsu, China (Ammonia), and Port of Batumi, Georgia (Sulfur and Finished Fertilizers). [7]

History

Transammonia, founded by Ronald P. Stanton in 1965, specialized in the international trade of ammonia. Transammonia has since evolved as a market leader in petroleum coke, sulfur, anhydrous ammonia, and sulfuric acid, with niche positions in nitric acid and finished fertilizer. [7] The Company changed its name from Transammonia, Inc. to Trammo, Inc. on October 29, 2013. The Trammo trademark has long been associated with the company and had been the name of several subsidiaries. The name change reflected the current broad range of products and markets in which the company trades, in addition to ammonia. [8]

In the fiscal year that ended on May 1, 1990, Transammonia posted sales of US$1.1 billion. [9] In 2006, the company ventured into natural gas gathering in the United States. [8] In 2007, the company was ranked by Forbes magazine as among the top 50 private companies in the United States. [6] In 2012, the company was ranked as #24 by Forbes magazine in its list of the largest private companies in the United States. [10] In 2022, the company was ranked as #13 in Crain's list of the largest privately held companies in the New York area and #133 in the Forbes magazine's list of the largest private companies in the United States. Controversy

In 2010, Transammonia ended the dealings of its Swiss subsidiary, Trammo Trading, with Iranian companies, [13] [14] in part as a response to an investigation by [CNBC] regarding the company's involvement with entities within Iran. [14] The United States has prohibitions against commerce in Iran, in part to persuade that country to disengage in nuclear development. [14] Transammonia maintained that its foreign subsidiary's Iranian dealings were allowed under U.S. law, but decided to end them anyway. The company stated, "the small amount of business done there does not justify the reputational risk currently associated with doing business with entities located in Iran, due to the growing international concern over the policies of the current regime there." [13]

The refinery is owned and operated by Coffeyville Resources Refining & Marketing. The refinery employs about 500 people and produces approximately 2,100,000 US gallons (7,900,000 L) of gasoline per day, and 1,700,000 US gallons (6,400,000 L) of middle distillates per day, predominantly diesel oil.

The Enterprise South Industrial Park, located in Chattanooga, Tennessee consists of 6,000 acres (24 km2). Originally the site of the Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant and operated by the U.S. Department of Defense, a large portion of the property is now home to the Volkswagen Chattanooga Assembly Plant as well as other industries.

The wet sulfuric acid process (WSA process) is a gas desulfurization process. After Danish company Haldor Topsoe introduced this technology in 1987, it has been recognized as a process for recovering sulfur from various process gases in the form of commercial quality sulfuric acid (H2SO4) with the simultaneous production of high-pressure steam. The WSA process can be applied in all industries where sulfur removal presents an issue.

The history of fertilizer has largely shaped political, economic, and social circumstances in their traditional uses. Subsequently, there has been a radical reshaping of environmental conditions following the development of chemically synthesized fertilizers.

Mekog was a chemical company founded 1928, that manufactured fertilizer using hydrogen from coke oven gas as a feedstock. The company's facilities were located on the site of the Koninklijke Nederlandsche Hoogovens en Staalfabrieken steelworks near IJmuiden in the Netherlands.

Coal gasification is a process whereby a hydrocarbon feedstock (coal) is converted into gaseous components by applying heat under pressure in the presence of steam. Rather than burning, most of the carbon-containing feedstock is broken apart by chemical reactions that produce "syngas." Syngas is primarily hydrogen and carbon monoxide, but the exact composition can vary. In Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) systems, the syngas is cleaned and burned as fuel in a combustion turbine which then drives an electric generator. Exhaust heat from the combustion turbine is recovered and used to create steam for a steam turbine-generator. The use of these two types of turbines in combination is one reason why gasification-based power systems can achieve high power generation efficiencies. Currently, commercially available gasification-based systems can operate at around 40% efficiencies. Syngas, however, emits more greenhouse gases than natural gas, and almost twice as much carbon as a coal plant. Coal gasification is also water-intensive.

Monolith Inc. is an American chemical and materials producer based in Nebraska. The company is known for being the first company to use methane pyrolysis to split natural gas into carbon and hydrogen gas on a commercial scale. The carbon resulting from the process is converted into carbon black. The company is building a plant where the hydrogen gas from the process will be converted to anhydrous ammonia. Monolith was founded by Robert Hanson and Pete Johnson in 2012, in Redwood City, California.
