Recording

The single was released on November 13, 2024, in the buildup to the first studio album by Heavy Moss, Dead Slow, which was released on November 22. [1] Lucas Harwood stated that the song started as "a demo I had kicking around for a few years that I totally forgot about." [1] Harwood stated that he had his Jazz teacher James Bowers help him work on the cords, and get the verses and chorus to work together, and that "the verses are an anxious stream of consciousness and is kind of jolty and angular" while the chorus "is in a different key and is meant to be a really pretty love song within the song." [1] He also stated that his son Ari coined the line “I noticed your life” and that he was largely inspired by the songwriting of David Berman. [1] Much of the work on “Treadmills” was done in post-production as the band experimented with different cords and styles. [2]

Reception

The song has been described as a "jangly waltz" that moves through various motifs before incorporating psychedelic elements and as being reminiscent of The Flaming Lips. [3] Flood Magazine described the song as a "muted psych odyssey" similar in style to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard , which Harwood is also a member of. [2]

Post-metal is a music genre rooted in heavy metal but exploring approaches beyond metal conventions. It emerged in the 1990s with bands such as Neurosis and Godflesh, who transformed metal texture through experimental composition. In a way similar to the predecessor genres post-rock and post-hardcore, post-metal offsets the darkness and intensity of extreme metal with an emphasis on atmosphere, emotion, and even "revelation", developing an expansive but introspective sound variously imbued with elements of ambient, noise, psychedelic, progressive, and classical music, and often shoegaze and art rock. Songs are typically long, with loose and layered structures that discard the verse–chorus form in favor of crescendos and repeating themes. The sound centres on guitars and drums, while any vocals are often but not always screamed or growled and resemble an additional instrument.
