Trials was an American metal band who formed in Chicago in 2008. They played a blend of groove metal, thrash metal and metalcore [1] and their music also has melodic and progressive elements.

History

Origins (2007–2011)

Trials was originally formed by vocalist/guitarist Mark Sugar and former Novembers Doom drummer Sasha Horn, sometime in late 2007. In an interview with About.com, Mark Sugar stated, "We formed...with only two members and the sole intention of recording a demo. The demo got more attention than we bargained for, and we gradually became a full band." [2] As the band's demo gained notoriety in Chicago and beyond, the band recruited bassist Usha Rajbhandari and guitarist Remy Walle, and gradually began writing what would become their first album, Witness to the Downfall.

Witness to the Downfall (2011)

After several delays, Trials' first album, Witness to the Downfall, was released independently on August 1, 2011. Produced by the band, the record was mixed and mastered by German engineer Lasse Lammert. Artwork duties were handled by Seth Siro Anton, of the band Septicflesh.

During the lengthy recording process, the band parted ways with drummer Sasha Horn. Adam Kopecky joined as the new drummer in 2010, handling all live dates in support of Witness to the Downfall.

The album met with mixed reviews, most notably a 7 out of 10 in Metal Hammer magazine.

In the Shadow of Swords (2013)

In 2012, the band began work on what would become their second record, In the Shadow of Swords. In the early stages of recording, guitarist Remy Walle parted ways with Trials. The band had little to say about his departure, other than that he was "relieved of his duties". [3] Guitarist Ryan Bruchert, formerly of Chicago grindcore band HeWhoCorrupts, joined the band in July 2012. [4] In the Shadow of Swords would be the first Trials record to feature contributions from Bruchert and Kopecky.

When asked about the band's musical direction, Sugar stated "I think we got a little more progressive since the debut, more complex. The new music is so much darker and more aggressive, and that's really not due to any choice in direction -- it's just the result of our attitudes as people." [2]

The band once again enlisted Lasse Lammert to engineer and mix the record. The cover artwork was created by Sugar, Rajbhandari, and Chris Angelucci of Encrust. The CD version of the album contains a bonus track, "Spirit Leaves", while the digital version contains a cover of Judas Priest's "Jawbreaker".

In the Shadow of Swords was released independently on May 1, 2013. Reviews were generally positive, and markedly improved from the reaction to Witness to the Downfall. [5] [6] [7] The band embarked on a short Midwestern tour in the fall of 2013 in support of the album.

Trials is expected to begin work on their third record in spring of 2014. A new song entitled "Don't Believe the Word" was performed at the 2013 live shows, and other new material has been previewed live on occasion.

This Ruined World (2015)

In early 2015, the band completed work on their third record, This Ruined World. Recording was handled by Pete Grossmann at Bricktop Recording, while the album was mixed by Quentin Poynter at Gunpoint Studios. The album's official release date is July 24, 2015.

As a preview of the new material, the band released a digital EP in June 2015. The EP features new song "Don't Believe the Word", as well as a cover of Strapping Young Lad's "Far Beyond Metal" as the B-side. Artwork for the EP was drawn by the band's drummer, Adam Kopecky.

In 2016, Trials announced on Facebook that they were no longer an active band.

Musical style

The band's style has been described as thrash/death or progressive thrash metal, with comparisons to thrash bands like Testament and Slayer as well as death metal pioneers Morbid Angel and Death. [8] [6] Band members have also claimed such disparate influences as Strapping Young Lad, Frank Zappa, Satyricon, Failure, and Emperor, among others. [3] [9]

Terrorizer is an American grindcore band from Los Angeles, California. It was originally formed in 1985 as Unknown Death by vocalist Oscar Garcia and guitarist Jesse Pintado. They would rename themselves Terrorizer after recruiting drummer Pete Sandoval, who remains the band's sole constant member throughout their discography, in 1986. The band's current lineup consists of Sandoval, bassist David Vincent, vocalist Brian Werner and guitarist Richie Brown. They are currently signed to Earache Records.

Solitude Aeturnus is an American epic doom metal band from Arlington, Texas. Founded by John Perez in early 1987, the original lineup consisted of Perez on guitar, vocalist Kristoff (Christopher) Gabehart, guitarist Tom Martinez, drummer Brad Kane, and Chris Hardin on bass. The name Solitude was chosen to pay homage to the bands Black Sabbath and Candlemass, both of whom had songs bearing the name "Solitude". Solitude Aeturnus released their debut album "Into the Depths of Sorrow" in 1991 with John Perez and Edgar Rivera on guitars, Robert Lowe on vocals, Lyle Steadham on bass and John Covington on drums. Solitude Aeturnus played with Candlemass in Texas in 1991. Their second and most progressive album "Beyond the Crimson Horizon" was released in 1992. "Through the Darkest Hour" the band's landmark album was released in 1994. "Downfall" the band's 4th studio album was released in 1996. "Adagio" which was released two years later in 1998 featured Steve Moseley on bass who replaced Lyle Steadham. Lyle Steadham was the main lyricist of the band until then. The band's final album "Alone" was released in 2006 once again with a different line up as James Martin took over bass duties, Steve Moseley moved to lead guitar replacing Edgar Rivera and Steve Nichols replaced John Covington on drums. Following a few concerts in Europe, Solitude Aeturnus went into a long hiatus as singer Robert Lowe took over singing duties in Candlemass.

Byzantine is an American heavy metal band from Charleston, West Virginia, that was formed in 2000. As of March 2016, the band consists of frontman and co-founder Chris "OJ" Ojeda, Brian Henderson (guitar), Matt Bowles (drums) and Ryan Postlethwait (bass). The band has released three studio albums on Prosthetic Records along with two independent albums. Byzantine is known for its unique sound and modern, "forward thinking" musical style which explores different musical territories and song structures.

Steve "Zetro" Souza is an American musician, best known for his work as lead vocalist with thrash metal band Exodus from 1986 to 1994, and again from 2002 to 2004. He rejoined Exodus for a third time in 2014. Souza is one of two singers, along with Chuck Billy, for the band Dublin Death Patrol. He also sings for the thrash metal band Tenet and was the lead singer for the thrash metal band Legacy. In 2011, Souza announced his new project, Hatriot. He stepped down as the frontman of the band in 2015, leaving the role of lead vocals to his son, Cody.

Onslaught are a British thrash metal band from Bristol, England, active from 1982 to 1991 and again since 2005. The band initially drew influences from US and British hardcore punk bands such as Discharge and the Exploited, as well as the new wave of British heavy metal, and eventually adopted a straightforward thrash metal sound. The band did not record an album during its period of activity, but issued live and demo material on the 2001 CD Wreckage.
