Septicflesh (formerly known as Septic Flesh) are a Greek death metal band from Athens, founded in 1990. [2]
Septicflesh were formed in Athens in March 1990 by Sotiris Vayenas (guitar), Spiros Antoniou (bass and vocals), and Christos Antoniou (guitars). They released a debut EP, Temple of the Lost Race in December with Black Power Records, 1991. [2] The band recorded their first full-length album, Mystic Places of Dawn , in April 1994 at the Storm studio with the co-production of Magus Wampyr Daoloth (who had been the keyboardist for Rotting Christ). [3] released by Holy Records. They started working on a new album for 1995 and named it Esoptron . It was produced by Septic Flesh and George Zacharopoulos, recorded and mixed at Storm Studios in March - April 1995, mastered by Sonic Contact (France), and released by Holy Records
Session vocalist Natalie Rassoulis joined for The Ophidian Wheel (1997) and again for A Fallen Temple (1998). [4]
The group split up in October 2003, and after the breakup, its members moved on to different or existing projects: Christos Antoniou continued involvement with Chaostar, which he formed in 1998, and Katsionis played guitar for Nightfall and keyboards for Firewind. TheDevilWorx formed a year after Septic Flesh's disbanding, and featured some members from Septic Flesh's original line-up. In March 2007, guitarist Sotiris Vayenas revealed his plans for a new solo project called Aenaos.
On February 19, 2007, Septic Flesh announced a reunion for Greece's Metal Healing Festival featuring Orphaned Land, Rage and Aborted, set to take place July 20–22. [5]
On April 3, 2007, Blabbermouth.net reported the band reunited for a seventh full-length CD, for French record label Season of Mist. According to guitarist and composer Christos Antoniou, the release would feature a full orchestra and a choir, totalling 80 musicians and 32 singers. [6] Septic Flesh finalized the new album, Communion, in Studio Fredman in Sweden; it was released in April 2008. By this time the band had changed its name from Septic Flesh to Septicflesh. According to guitarist Christos it looks better and states a new phase in the band. [7]
On September 10, 2009, the band announced that they had begun work on a new studio album, tentatively planned for release in the beginning of 2011.
On December 17, 2010, the band released the first single, "The Vampire From Nazareth", and announced that the new album will be shipped on April 28 in the UK, and April 29 in the United States. [8] [9]
On February 12, 2014, the band released details about Titan . [10] The album was released in June 2014. On December 15, 2014, it was announced that Kerim "Krimh" Lechner had joined Septicflesh as their new drummer, following the recent departure of their former longtime drummer, Fotis Benardo (a.k.a. Fotis Gianakopoulos).
In June 2016 interview it was declared that, since early 2016, Septicflesh had been working on their tenth studio album, scheduled for release toward spring 2017. [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] In early June 2017, band members claimed that Septicflesh's tenth album, titled Codex Omega , is officially due to release on September 1, 2017. Like the previous album, Titan, Codex Omega was released through Prosthetic Records. [16]
On August 29, 2018, it was announced that the band had signed to Nuclear Blast Records. [17]
In February 2019, Septicflesh performed their first live performance featuring a full orchestra and choir, in a sold-out performance at the Teatro Metropólitan in Mexico City, Mexico. The show was recorded and was released through Season of Mist in July 2020 as the band's first official live album, titled Infernus Sinfonica MMXIX, in audio and video format. [18]
In 2020, the band announced the upcoming release of a new studio album. The album, entitled "Modern Primitive" was released in May of 2022. [19]
In September 2024, Septicflesh where the first metal band to perform in Odeon of Herodes Atticus, once again featuring a full orchestra and a choir. [20]

Gorgoroth is a Norwegian black metal band based in Bergen. It was formed in 1992 by guitarist Infernus, who is the sole original member remaining, and has released nine studio albums. Gorgoroth are a Satanic band and have drawn controversy due to some of their concerts, which have featured impaled sheep heads and mock crucifixions. The band is named after the dead plateau of darkness in the land of Mordor from J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings.
Season of Mist is an independent record label and record distributor with subsidiaries in France and the United States. The record label was founded in 1996 by Michael S. Berberian in Marseille, France. From the start releasing black metal, pagan metal, and death metal records, the label moved on to releasing albums of avant-garde metal, gothic metal and punk bands as well. The label has two offices, one in Marseille, France and one in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Mystic Places of Dawn is the first album by Septic Flesh, released in 1994.
Esoptron is the second full-length album by Septic Flesh, released in 1995. The actual title is ΕΣΟΠΤΡΟΝ or Έσοπτρον, the word in Greek for "(inner) mirror".
The album has been reissued in June 2013 by Season of Mist.
Ophidian Wheel is the third full-length album by the Greek death metal band Septic Flesh. In 2013, a reissue containing bonus tracks and new artwork was released through Season of Mist.
Nightfall is a Greek extreme metal band from Athens. Formed by vocalist/bassist/keyboardist Efthimis Karadimas in 1991, the group is currently signed to Season of Mist. They are widely considered the forerunners to a "mediterranean way to black metal" together with Inchiuvatu and Moonspell.
Roger Tiegs, better known by his stage name Infernus, is a Norwegian black metal musician and Satanist. He is the sole founding member and chief ideologist of the black metal band Gorgoroth, formed in 1992, in addition to being the founder and head of Forces of Satan Records. While mainly a guitarist, Infernus has also participated as bassist, drummer and vocalist on several recordings released both by Gorgoroth and other bands.
Tom Cato Visnes, better known as King ov Hell or simply King, is a Norwegian musician. He is best known as the former bassist of black metal band Gorgoroth, and as a member of Audrey Horne, Sahg, I, Ov Hell, God Seed, Abbath, Jotunspor and Temple of the Black Moon.
Chaostar is a classical, opera and vocal orchestra from Greece started in 1998, composed of Christos Antoniou, Spiros Antoniou, Sotiris Vayenas, Nathalie Rassoulis, and Sapfo Stavridou. Several of the members are also members of Septicflesh. They have released four albums on Holy Records, a label with notable artists such as Elend, Orphaned Land, and Septicflesh.

Sumerian Daemons is the sixth studio album by the Greek death metal band Septicflesh. It was released by Hammerheart Records in 2003. It was originally the band's final album before they disbanded later the same year, until they reformed in 2007.
Tormentor is a Norwegian black metal musician who is best known for his work as guitarist with the black metal band Gorgoroth.
Communion is the seventh studio album by Greek death metal band Septicflesh. It was released on March 17, 2008 worldwide, and March 25, 2008 in the United States, both dates through the French label Season of Mist. The album is the first since the band's split up, after the release of Sumerian Daemons in 2003, and the first to be released under the name "Septicflesh" following the band's name change.
Quantos Possunt ad Satanitatem Trahunt is the eighth studio album by Norwegian black metal band Gorgoroth. It was released on 21 October 2009 by Regain Records. This album marked the return of Pest on vocals, as well as the debut of Tomas Asklund on drums and Bøddel on bass.
Kerim "Krimh" Lechner is an Austrian musician, best known for his drumming work for Polish death metal band Decapitated. He is currently the drummer for Greek symphonic death metal band Septicflesh.
The Great Mass is the eighth studio album by Greek death metal band Septicflesh. It was recorded between July–September 2010 in Devasoundz (Greece) and The Abyss (Sweden) and produced by Peter Tägtgren. The orchestration was written by Christos Antoniou and recorded by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Upon release, The Great Mass received universal acclaim from critics. In 2021, it was elected by Metal Hammer as the 9th best symphonic metal album of all time.
A Fallen Temple is the fourth full-length album by the Greek death metal band Septic Flesh. In 2013, a reissue containing bonus tracks and new artwork was released. This was the first Septic Flesh release since 1991's "Temple of the Lost Race" to feature a human drummer.
Titan is the ninth studio album by Greek death metal band Septicflesh, released on June 20, 2014 through Season of Mist. At its release, the album was met with generally positive reviews by critics and fans, even if less favourable than the band's two previous albums.
Spiros Antoniou is a Greek death metal singer, bassist, and visual artist best known for his work with Greek symphonic death metal band Septicflesh, in which he has been since 1990 foundation and of which he is a founding member. He has also contributed to bands such as TheDevilWorx, Chaostar, and Thou Art Lord.
