General elections were held in South Africa on 8 May 2019 to elect a new President, National Assembly and provincial legislatures in each province. These were the sixth elections held since the end of apartheid in 1994 and determined who would become the next President of South Africa.
The 2021 South African municipal elections were held on 1 November 2021, to elect councils for all district, metropolitan and local municipalities in each of the country's nine provinces. It is the sixth municipal election held in South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994, held every five years. The previous municipal elections were held in 2016. On 21 April 2021, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the elections will be held on Wednesday, 27 October 2021. It had been recommend by Dikgang Moseneke to delay the municipal elections until 2022. The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) requested the Constitutional Court to support the date postponement. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supported the date postponement while the Democratic Alliance (DA) was against the postponement of the date. The Constitutional Court dismissed the application to postpone the date until 2022, ruling that they had to take place between 27 October and 1 November. On 9 September 2021, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma announced that the elections would be held on 1 November.
Makoti Sibongile Khawula is a South African politician and previous anti-apartheid activist from KwaZulu-Natal serving as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa for the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party since 2014. Khawula is known for her insistence on speaking Zulu in Parliament.
Vusumuzi Robert Shongwe is a South African politician who has served in the provincial legislature and Executive Council in Mpumalanga province. Between September and November 2015, he served as acting Premier of Mpumalanga while Premier David Mabuza was on sick leave. He is a member of the African National Congress and was formerly treasurer of the party's provincial executive committee in Mpumalanga.
Sam Zandamela is a South African politician from Mpumalanga who has served as a member of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature since August 2022, and previously from July 2018 to May 2019. A member of the Economic Freedom Fighters party, he previously served as the party's deputy provincial chairperson. Zandamela served as a permanent delegate to the National Council of Provinces from May 2019 until August 2022.
Gijimani Jim Skosana is a South African politician from Mpumalanga and a current Member of the National Assembly of South Africa for the African National Congress (ANC). He previously served as the mayor of the Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality from 2016 to 2017.
Valentia Thokozile Malinga is a South African politician and a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa from Mpumalanga. She is a member of the African National Congress.
Elphus Fani Mathebula is a South African politician who has been a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa for the African National Congress since 2019.
Michael Collen Sedibe is a South African politician who is currently a Member of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature and the provincial leader of the legislature's official opposition party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). He joined the EFF in 2013 after he was expelled from the African National Congress and he was first elected to the provincial legislature in the 2014 general election. In September 2022, he was elected to a third term as the EFF's Provincial Chairperson in Mpumalanga.
Thamsanqa China Dodovu is a South African politician who is currently serving as a Delegate to the National Council of Provinces since May 2019. He was formerly the Mayor of Klerksdorp's Matlosana Local Municipality and served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Local Government and Traditional Affairs in the North West provincial government from May 2012 until June 2013. Dodovu is a member of the African National Congress and served as the party's Deputy Provincial Chairperson in the North West from 2011 to 2015.
Dikeledi Gladys Mahlangu is a South African politician who is currently serving as Chairperson of the Select Committee on Appropriations in the National Council of Provinces. She formerly represented her party, the African National Congress, in the National Assembly from 2014 to 2019. Before that, she was a Member of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature and from 2009 to 2014 she served in the Mpumalanga Executive Council under Premier David Mabuza.
Increase Zandisile "John" Ncinane was a South African politician and sports administrator from the Eastern Cape. He represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2004.
Pamella "Nana" Mnandi is a South African politician from KwaZulu-Natal. She represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1999 until 2005, when she resigned. Her resignation followed her conviction on a fraud charge in the Travelgate scandal.
Nyambeni Wilson Mudau is a South African politician from Mpumalanga. He represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2001 to 2004. Before that, he served in the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature and National Council of Provinces.
Douglas Seleke Maimane is a South African politician who has been mayor of Madibeng Local Municipality in the North West since November 2021. He previously represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2004. In 2005, he was convicted of having stolen from Parliament in the Travelgate scandal.
Garth Piet Mngomezulu is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2006, representing the Mpumalanga constituency. In August 2006, shortly after he vacated his seat, he was convicted of having defrauded Parliament in the Travelgate scandal.
Daniel April Andrew Olifant, sometimes misspelled Daniel Oliphant, was a South African politician and former trade unionist. A former deputy president of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa), he represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2009. He was convicted of abusing Parliament's travel-voucher system in the Travelgate scandal.
Mathupa Lameck Mokoena is a South African politician and traditional leader who is currently the chairperson of the Mpumalanga House of Traditional Leaders and the national president of the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (Contralesa). The leader of Mpumalanga's Mathibela Tribal Authority, he represented the African National Congress (ANC) in Parliament from 1994 to 2009.
Charles Robert Redcliffe is a South African politician. A former Member of Parliament, he represented the National Party and New National Party until March 2003, when he crossed the floor to the Democratic Alliance.
Robert Zamxolo Nogumla is a South African politician from the Eastern Cape. A member of the African National Congress (ANC), he served terms in the National Council of Provinces, the National Assembly, and the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature.
