Tsepo Winston Mhlongo is a South African politician. As a member of the Democratic Alliance,he served as a councillor in the City of Johannesburg until the 2014 national election,when he was elected to the National Assembly of South Africa. After that,he was appointed Shadow Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform. Mhlongo became the Shadow Minister of Sport and Recreation in January 2017 before he was selected to be Shadow Minister of Sports,Arts and Culture in June 2019. On 1 December 2023,Mhlongo was expelled from the DA and lost his parliamentary membership. He has since joined ActionSA.
Mhlongo was elected to the student representative council of Matseliso Secondary School when he was in matric. [1] In 1996,he enrolled for a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree at the University of South Africa,but he couldn't complete the course due to financial constraints. Mhlongo then did an advanced diploma in ministerial training at the Faithways Bible Training Centre in 1997. [1] He achieved an advanced certificate in municipal governance from the University of Johannesburg in 2007. [1] In 2008,he fulfilled a course on finance for non-financial managers at Wits Business School. [1] Mhlongo did a certificate program in management development on municipal finance at the Wits Business School in 2010. [1] In 2016,he obtained a certificate in governance and public leadership from the Wits School of Governance. Mhlongo is currently pursuing a postgraduate diploma in governance at the Wits School of Governance. [1]
In 1998,Mhlongo joined the Democratic Party structures in Soweto. He joined the Democratic Alliance,when it was formed in 2000. He was then appointed a shadow councillor candidate for the Greater Johannesburg region,representing Orlando East. [1]
At the 2006 municipal election,he was elected as a PR councillor in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. [1] Mhlongo has been a member of the DA's Johannesburg regional executive committee,the Gauteng provincial executive committee,and the Federal Council. [1]
Mhlongo became a parliamentary candidate for the party in the 8 May 2014 general elections. He appeared eighteenth on the DA's Gauteng list, [2] thus qualifying for a seat in Parliament as the DA retained its status as official opposition. [3] He was sworn in on 21 May. On 5 June 2014,he was appointed as Shadow Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform by Mmusi Maimane,the DA parliamentary leader. [4]
On 24 November 2016,Mhlongo was selected to be the Shadow Minister of Sport and Recreation,replacing Solly Malatsi. His appointment took effect on 1 January 2017. [5]
For the 8 May 2019 national and provincial elections,he was the 89th candidate on the DA's national list,the 27th candidate on the DA's regional list,and the 57th candidate on the DA's provincial list. [6] At the election,it appeared that Mhlongo had lost his seat in the National Assembly. [7] However,fellow DA MP Gwen Ngwenya declined her seat and the DA chose Mhlongo to fill it. He was sworn in along with all the other Members of Parliament on 22 May 2019. [8] On 5 June 2019,he was appointed as Shadow Minister of Sports,Arts and Culture by Maimane. [9]
Maimane resigned as DA leader in October 2019 and John Steenhuisen was voted in as his interim successor in November. [10] He inherited Maimane's shadow cabinet. The DA then decided to hold a leadership conference in 2020 to elect new leadership. Steenhuisen started his leadership campaign in February 2020 with Mhlongo publicly endorsing his leadership campaign early on. [11] Following the resignation of Funzela Ngobeni as the DA's Johannesburg regional chairperson in March 2020,Mhlongo was elected as his acting successor. [12]
In April 2020,Mhlongo called for Danny Jordaan,the president of the South Africa Football Association (Safa) president,to be suspended and said that he "is not fit to lead Safa in this era". He also criticised the organisation. [13] In August,Safa and Jordaan demanded that Mhlongo apologise and retract the remarks or face legal action. [14] Mhlongo dismissed it as a "desperate attempt to silence" him. [15]
After John Steenhuisen was elected DA leader for a full term in November,he announced his Shadow Cabinet in December 2020,in which Mhlongo was reappointed as Shadow Minister of Sports,Arts and Culture. [16]
On 1 December 2023,Mhlongo was expelled from the DA after he was found guilty of plotting to defraud the party's electoral systems ahead of the 2024 national and provincial elections. He lost his membership of the National Assembly as a result. [17] He then accused DA leader Steenhuisen and Manny de Freitas of using party money to fund Steenhuisen's leadership campaigns. The DA has since said that the party would take legal action against Mhlongo. [18] On 7 December 2023,Mhlongo joined ActionSA. [19]
In August 2020,Mhlongo was accused of shopping for alcohol during an online parliamentary session after a brief video of him flashed across the screens with a trolley behind him filled with what appeared to be bottles of alcohol. [20] He denied that he was buying alcohol and said that he was buying groceries at Pick n Pay. [21]
John Henry Steenhuisen is a South African politician who has served as the twentieth leader of the Opposition since October 2019 and has been the leader of the Democratic Alliance since November 2020,having served as the interim leader for one year from November 2019. He was chief whip of the official opposition from May 2014 until October 2019. Ideologically,Steenhuisen has been described as a classical liberal,a supporter of non-racialism and a firm believer in racial equality.
Makashule Gana is a South African politician who is the chief organiser for RISE Mzansi. He previously served as a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature for the opposition Democratic Alliance. Between 2014 and 2016 he was a member of the National Assembly,where he was Shadow Minister of Human Settlements. Gana also served as the Deputy Federal Chairperson of the DA until 2015. He was previously leader of the DA Youth and DA councillor in the City of Johannesburg,he holds a BSc degree and is currently registered for a Postgraduate Diploma in Management at the Wits Business School.
Mmusi Aloysias Maimane is a South African politician,businessman,and leader of Build One South Africa,a political party. Maimane is also the former Leader of South Africa's opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) political party from 10 May 2015 to 23 October 2019,and the former Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of South Africa from 29 May 2014 to 24 October 2019. He is the former leader of the DA in the Johannesburg City Council and the DA National Spokesperson. In 2011,he was elected to be the DA's Johannesburg mayoral candidate in the 2011 municipal elections. In that election,Maimane helped to grow the party's voter base,but was not elected mayor. Thereafter he served as Leader of the Official Opposition on the Johannesburg City Council until May 2014. In addition to his political career,he is also a pastor and elder at Liberty Church. He formed the One South Africa Movement in 2020. Mmusi Maimane launched this new political party on 24 September 2022.
The Shadow Cabinet of Mmusi Maimane was formed on 5 June 2014 in South Africa following his election as Parliamentary Leader of the Democratic Alliance and Leader of the Opposition on 29 May 2014. The Democratic Alliance parliamentary caucus also elected other caucus leadership. John Steenhuisen was elected Chief Whip with Anchen Dreyer as Caucus Chairperson. These elections all occurred following the 2014 general elections,in which the Democratic Alliance retained its post as the Official Opposition in the National Assembly of South Africa.
Thomas Charles Ravenscroft Walters is a South African politician of the Democratic Alliance (DA) who has been serving as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since May 2014. He served as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2014. In 2012,Walters was elected Deputy Federal Council Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance,and has been deputising Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille since 2019. He deputised James Selfe from 2012 to 2019. Walters was the party's Shadow Minister and Shadow Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform.
Annette Steyn is a South African retired politician,formerly a Member of the National Assembly for the official opposition Democratic Alliance (DA). Steyn was first elected to Parliament in 2009 and served in the Shadow Cabinet in various positions. She was also at one stage the DA Eastern Cape Provincial Chairperson.

Leonard Jones Basson is a South African politician,a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Democratic Alliance and the DA's provincial leader in the North West. Before being elected unopposed to this position on 21 November 2020,Basson had served as the deputy provincial leader from 2017 to 2020. He has held various posts in the Official Opposition Shadow Cabinet of South Africa. Basson has been the Shadow Minister of Water &Sanitation since 2020.
Baxolile Babongile Nodada is a South African politician for the Democratic Alliance who has been a Member of Parliament since 2019,and the Shadow Minister of Basic Education and the Parliamentary Counsellor to the Leader of the Opposition in John Steenhuisen's Shadow Cabinet since 2020.
Denis Joseph is a South African politician from the Western Cape. A member of the Democratic Alliance,he was elected as a permanent delegate to the National Council of Provinces in 2011. He served in the NCOP until his election to the Western Cape Provincial Parliament in 2014. After the 2019 election,Joseph returned to Parliament to serve as an MP in the National Assembly.

Luyolo Mphithi is a South African politician who has been the Shadow Minister of Human Settlements since 2023 and a Member of Parliament since 2019. He previously served as Shadow Minister of Women,Youth and Persons with Disabilities in the Presidency from 2019 to 2023. A member of the Democratic Alliance,he served as the Federal Leader of the party's youth organisation from 2018 until his resignation in 2022. Luyolo Mphithi was elected as Vice President of the African Liberal Youth for democracy in Dakar,Senegal in 2022. He also serves as a Bureau Regional member of the International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY).
Michael Bagraim is a South African politician and labour lawyer. A member of the Democratic Alliance,he was elected to the National Assembly in 2014. He was then appointed Shadow Deputy Minister of Labour. In 2017,Bagraim was promoted to Shadow Minister of Labour. After the 2019 election,he was made Shadow Deputy Minister of Labour and Employment.
Darren Bergman is a South African politician who has served as Shadow Deputy Minister of Trade,Industry and Competition since 2023 and has been a Member of Parliament for the Democratic Alliance since 2014. He was Shadow Deputy Minister of Sport and Recreation between 2014 and 2019 and Shadow Minister of International Relations and Cooperation between 2019 and 2023.
Hendrik Christiaan Crafford Krüger is a South African politician,currently the Shadow Deputy Minister of Small Business Development and a Member of Parliament (MP) for the opposition Democratic Alliance.
