Mmoba Solomon "Solly" Malatsi (born 22 December 1985) is a South African politician who is currently serving as Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies in the Government of National Unity (GNU) since July 2024. He has been a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since May 2014. He has served in the national leadership of the Democratic Alliance (DA) as a deputy federal chairperson since 2023. He has also been the party's national spokesperson since August 2022,previously holding the position from June 2018 to November 2020. Malatsi was also the Parliamentary Counsellor to the DA Parliamentary Leader. He has also held posts in the DA's shadow cabinet.
Following the 2024 South African general election he now serves as the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies. [2] [1]
Malatsi was born in Ga-Dikgale in the former Transvaal Province. He matriculated from Phiri Kolobe High School and went on to obtain a Bachelor of Administration from the University of Limpopo. Malatsi also achieved an Honours Degree in political studies from the University of the Witwatersrand. Malatsi is a graduate of the DA's Young Leaders Programme. [3]
Malatsi became a parliamentary researcher for the DA in 2008. [3] He then worked as a spokesperson for the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Transport and Public Works,Robin Carlisle,from 2009 to 2011. Between 2011 and 2014,he served as the spokesperson for Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille.
In May 2014,he became an MP for the DA and was appointed as Shadow Minister of Sport and Recreation. He was later appointed as Shadow Minister of Human Settlements. [4]
In June 2018,Malatsi was appointed as national spokesperson for the DA,succeeding Phumzile van Damme. [5] He was re-elected for a second term as an MP in May 2019. He then became the party's Shadow Minister in the Presidency in June. In October 2019,he was appointed parliamentary counsellor to the newly elected DA parliamentary leader,John Steenhuisen. [6]
On 24 November 2020,Malatsi stepped down as the DA's national spokesperson. [7] Malatsi was reappointed to the shadow cabinet as Shadow Minister in the Presidency in the following days. [8]
In the 2020 Register of Members’Interests,Malatsi revealed that he had received remuneration from the Foschini Group for a sports photo shoot. [9]
On 18 August 2022,Malatsi was appointed as the DA's national spokesperson,succeeding Siviwe Gwarube,who became the new chief whip of the DA's parliamentary caucus. [10]
Malatsi was elected as one of three deputy federal chairpersons of the DA at the party's Federal Congress in 2023. [11]
In July 2024,Malatsi was sworn in as the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies. [2] [1]
In November 2024,Malatsi withdrew the South African Broadcasting Corporation SOC Ltd Bill (B32-2023),widely known as the SABC Bill,citing concerns that it does not address the public broadcaster's funding model and that it grants the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies excessive influence over board appointments. [12] The chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies in the National Assembly,Khusela Diko,criticised Malatsi's decision,describing it as a potential "death knell" for the SABC. [13]
Natasha Wendy Anita MazzoneMP OSI is a South African politician who served as the Chief Whip of the Official Opposition in the National Assembly of South Africa from October 2019 until August 2022. She has been a Member of the National Assembly,representing the official opposition Democratic Alliance (DA),since 2009. She was the second Deputy Federal Council Chairperson of the DA and the party's spokesperson on state capture. Mazzone has previously served as Shadow Minister of Public Enterprises and of Communications.
South Africa's Official Opposition Shadow Cabinet consists of Members of the National Assembly who scrutinise their corresponding office holders in the executive branch of government and develop alternative policies for their respective portfolios. The Democratic Alliance (DA) retained their position as official opposition in the 2019 general election and Mmusi Maimane announced his shadow cabinet on 5 June 2019.

Kevin John Mileham is a South African politician,a Member of the South African Parliament for the Democratic Alliance and the Shadow Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy. Mileham was first elected to Parliament on 3 June 2013,replacing Athol Trollip. His first parliamentary role was as the Shadow Deputy Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development. After the 2014 National Elections,he was appointed the Shadow Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. In February 2019,he was appointed as Shadow Minister of Energy. After the National and Provincial Elections on 8 May 2019,Mileham was appointed as Shadow Minister of the expanded portfolio of Mineral Resources and Energy. Mileham was re-elected to Parliament in 2024.
Phumzile Thelma Van Damme is a South African tech consultant and activist who specialises in combating political disinformation and misinformation. A former politician,she represented the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the National Assembly of South Africa between May 2014 and May 2021. She was the party's Shadow Minister of Communications from October 2015 to December 2020.
Thomas Charles Ravenscroft Walters is a South African politician of the Democratic Alliance (DA) who has been serving as a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since May 2024. Previously,he served as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2014 and then as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa from 2014 until 2024. In 2012,Walters was elected Deputy Federal Council Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance,and has been deputising Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille since 2019. He deputised James Selfe from 2012 to 2019. Walters was the party's Shadow Minister and Shadow Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform.
Siviwe Gwarube is a South African politician who is currently serving as Minister of Basic Education in the Government of National Unity (GNU) since July 2024. A member of the Democratic Alliance (DA),she was the Chief Whip of the Official Opposition between August 2022 and June 2024. She joined the National Assembly of South Africa in the May 2019 general election.
Jacques Warren William Julius is a South African Democratic Alliance politician from Gauteng who served as the Deputy Chief Whip of the Official Opposition in the National Assembly of South Africa from May 2019 to December 2021. He was acting Chief Whip between the resignation of John Steenhuisen and the appointment of Natasha Mazzone in October 2019. He became a Member of the National Assembly in May 2019. He has served as a Member of Parliament since May 2014 and before that,he was a councillor of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality between 2006 and 2014. Horn is a member of the Democratic Alliance.
Michéle Odette Clarke is a South African politician. A member of the Democratic Alliance,Clarke served as a councillor in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality from 2004 until her election to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature as a DA representative in 2014. After serving one term in the provincial legislature,Clarke was elected to the National Assembly of South Africa in 2019. Nazley Khan Sharif MPL is a South African politician who has been a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature since 2024. She previously served in the National Assembly of South Africa and in the DA's Shadow Cabinet as the Shadow Minister of Women,Youth and Persons with Disabilities from April 2023 until May 2024,having previously served as Deputy Minister between June 2019 and April 2023. Khan is a member of the Democratic Alliance.
Maliyakhe Lymon Shelembe is a South African politician. Shelembe was an Inkatha Freedom Party member until 2011. He was elected to the National Assembly in 2014 as a member of the National Freedom Party. Shelembe became a Democratic Alliance MP after the 2019 elections.

After John Steenhuisen was elected unopposed as the parliamentary leader by the Democratic Alliance's caucus on 27 October 2019,he announced a new shadow cabinet,on 5 December 2020.
Luyolo Mphithi is a South African politician who has been a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since 2019. A member of the Democratic Alliance,he served as Shadow Minister of Women,Youth and Persons with Disabilities in the Presidency from 2019 to 2023 and the Shadow Minister of Human Settlements from 2023 to 2024. Mphithi served as the Federal Leader of the DA's youth organisation from 2018 until his resignation in 2022. Luyolo Mphithi was elected as Vice President of the African Liberal Youth for democracy in Dakar,Senegal in 2022. He also serves as a Bureau Regional member of the International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY).
Tsepo Winston Mhlongo is a South African politician. As a member of the Democratic Alliance,he served as a councillor in the City of Johannesburg until the 2014 national election,when he was elected to the National Assembly of South Africa. After that,he was appointed Shadow Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform. Mhlongo became the Shadow Minister of Sport and Recreation in January 2017 before he was selected to be Shadow Minister of Sports,Arts and Culture in June 2019. On 1 December 2023,Mhlongo was expelled from the DA and lost his parliamentary membership. He has since joined ActionSA.
Darren Bergman is a South African politician who has been a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa for Democratic Alliance since 2014. Within the DA Shadow Cabinet,he was Shadow Deputy Minister of Sport and Recreation between 2014 and 2019,Shadow Minister of International Relations and Cooperation between 2019 and 2023 and Shadow Deputy Minister of Trade,Industry and Competition between 2023 and 2024.
