Cathlene Labuschagne is a South African politician serving as a permanent delegate to the National Council of the Provinces from the Western Cape since 2014. Labuschagne is a party member of the Democratic Alliance.

Life and career

Labuschagne was born in Durbanville in the former Cape Province. She moved to Namibia and completed her high school education at Mariental High School in Mariental. She returned to South Africa and studied at the University of Stellenbosch. [1]

She served as an alderman for Ward 70 in the Cape Town City Council. Labuschagne served as a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament from 6 May 2009 until 6 May 2014. During her tenure in the Provincial Parliament, she served as Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Local Government Oversight. She also served as the Democratic Alliance's spokesperson on Education. [2]

Labuschagne took office as a Member of the NCOP on 22 May 2014. She is a member of the Western Cape provincial delegation. She is currently serving as a whip for the party. She was elected leader of the Democratic Alliance NCOP caucus on 19 September 2016, succeeding Elza van Lingen, who had resigned to become Mayor of Kouga. [3] [4]

In May 2019, Labuschagne was re-elected as leader of the Democratic Alliance in the NCOP. [5]

The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) is the upper house of the Parliament of South Africa under the (post-apartheid) constitution which came into full effect in 1997. The Shadow Cabinet of Mmusi Maimane was formed on 5 June 2014 following his election as Parliamentary Leader of the Democratic Alliance and Leader of the Opposition on 29 May 2014. The Democratic Alliance parliamentary caucus also elected other caucus leadership. John Steenhuisen was elected Chief Whip with Anchen Dreyer as Caucus Chairperson. These elections all occurred following the 2014 general elections, in which the Democratic Alliance retained its post as the Official Opposition in the National Assembly of South Africa.

Nomafrench Mbombo is a South African academic and politician who has been the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Health since 2015 and a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since 2014. She previously served as the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport from 2014 to 2015. Mbombo was the Federal Leader of the Democratic Alliance Women's Network from 2018 to 2021.

Anroux Johanna Marais is a South African politician of the Democratic Alliance (DA). She has been serving as the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport since 2015. She has been a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since 2004.

Daylin Gary Mitchell is a South African politician who was sworn in as a Democratic Alliance Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament in 2015. He was then appointed Chairperson of the Standing Committee on the Premier and Constitutional Matters and the Petitions Committee. After the 2019 election, he became Chairperson of the Conduct Committee and the Standing Committee on Transport and Public Works and Deputy Chief Whip of the Majority Party.

27th South African Parliament Current session of South African Parliament

The 27th South African Parliament is the sixth Parliament of South Africa to convene since the introduction of non-racial government in South Africa in 1994. It was elected in the general election of 8 May 2019 and consists of the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces. The National Assembly contains 400 members, while the National Council of Provinces contains 90 members. It was formally opened by President Ramaphosa's State of the Nation Address in a joint sitting on 20 June 2019.

Ockert Stefanus "Okkie" Terblanche is a South African politician and retired police general serving as the Shadow Deputy Minister of Police since June 2019. He has been a Member of the National Assembly since May 2019. He represented the Western Cape in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) from October 2015 to May 2019. He was chairperson of the party's east region in the Western Cape from 2015 to 2020.

Thandi Gloria Mpambo-Sibhukwana was a South African educator and legislator. Pemmy Castelina Pamela Majodina is a South African politician serving as a Member of the National Assembly since 2019. A member of the African National Congress, she is the party's chief whip in the assembly. She was formerly a Member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature between 2004 and 2019 and a Member of the provincial Executive Council for five different portfolios from 2008 to 2019, respectively. Michéle Clarke South African politician

Michéle Odette Clarke is a South African politician serving as the Democratic Alliance's Shadow Deputy Minister of Public Enterprises since December 2020. She was the Shadow Deputy Minister of Public Service and Administration from June 2019 to December 2020. She was elected to the National Assembly in May 2019. From May 2014 to May 2019, she served as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. Clarke was also the ward councillor for Bedfordview until 2014.

Annerie Maria Magdalena Weber is a South African politician who serves as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa. A member of the Democratic Alliance, she was elected to Parliament in May 2019. Weber served as the chairperson of the DA's caucus in the Nkangala District Municipality between 2015 and 2019.

Chantel King is a South African politician and educator. A member of the Democratic Alliance, she was sworn in as a Buffalo City councillor in July 2015. King became a Member of Parliament in November 2016. She then became Shadow Deputy Minister of Science and Technology in January 2017. In December 2020 King was appointed as Shadow Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology.

Denis Joseph South African politician

Denis Joseph is a South African politician from the Western Cape. A member of the Democratic Alliance, he was elected as a permanent delegate to the National Council of Provinces in 2011. He served in the NCOP until his election to the Western Cape Provincial Parliament in 2014. After the 2019 election, Joseph returned to Parliament to serve as an MP in the National Assembly.

Eugene Jeffrey von Brandis was a South African politician and retired army officer. A member of the Democratic Alliance, he served as the speaker of the George Local Municipality from 2007 to 2009, when he was elected to the Western Cape Provincial Parliament. After serving one term in the provincial parliament, he was elected to the National Council of Provinces after the 2014 general election. He served in the NCOP until his death in May 2015.

Bronwynn Anne Engelbrecht is a South African politician and pharmacist. A member of the Democratic Alliance, Engelbrecht served as the DA City of Tshwane ward 42 councillor until 2015 when she was appointed as a Permanent Delegate to the National Council of Provinces from Gauteng. After leaving parliament in 2019, Engelbrecht returned to the Tshwane city council as a DA PR councillor. In February 2021 she was sworn in as a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.
